The weeks were flying by. My life was stable and I was actually enjoying life in this horrible little town. I was happy at home, my brother and I had bonded immensely since we'd moved in together. He was my best friend, the one person I truly looked up to. I also had close friends in Isabelle and Mike, and Bianca, who was surprisingly making my life brighter than I could remember. I never thought I'd fall for someone here, this young. But I had. It was weird how things work out, how I was almost forced into dating her.

I hadn't heard anything from Jake again about him catching me making out with Mike, and I hadn't heard anything from Mike about Jake texting him. I figured that they had sorted things out for themselves, in a big way. They seemed a lot closer at school. But not too close for anyone else to notice, I did because I was expecting it after my conversation with Jake.

My mind was on them one day in the cafeteria as I watched them go up and get their food together. To everyone else it'd just look like two friends, but I saw past that. Their smiles were radiating, their body language was euphoric. I was happy for them.

And I was happy for myself too. Bianca was sitting to my left, with her hand on my knee while she ate with the other. Phoebe, Susannah, Dennis and Isabelle sat with us. We were all talking animatedly about the end of term exams that were coming up. I was confident, for the first time in my life. My grades were good, life was good.

Then my phone went off.

I didn't recognise the number so I excused myself and left the cafeteria to answer it.

"Hello?" I asked curiously.

"Hello. Is this Mr Xen Kingston?" a stern, male voice asked.

"Err. Yes it is, who is this?" I asked.

"My name is Jim Henderson, I'm your brother's supervisor at work. There's um... been an incident." his voice broke off, I recognised the tone immediately. It was the tone my mother used when my favourite grandfather had died.

I gulped, tears were already swelling in my eyes. "Is he ok?" I gasped. It took everything I had to ask.

"No... but he's alive... oh, you'll have to see. Can you possibly make it to the hospital? I can call a taxi if you'd like, I'll pay ofcourse." he offered.

"No, I have a truck, I'll be there in a second." I walked back to the cafeteria to collect my bag, wiping my face clear and smoothing my facial features as I walked.

"Who was that?" Bianca asked innocently, smiling.

"That was Derrek, he needs me to go home for something." I lied, secretly cursing at myself for it, of anything to say, I said that. But I didn't care, I kissed her goodbye, waved to the others and walked straight to my car.

I jumped in, turned on the ignition and drove. My emotions erupted once I was in the car. Tears were rolling down my cheeks, clouding my vision, I was driving quickly. Along the road to the other side of town, where the hospital was. I wiped at my eyes, straining to see. But they clouded back over once I squinted my eyes in anguish.

I didn't see the lowered boom gates, or the flashing red warning signs. I was approaching the train crossing near the centre of town that was used to transport the coal, and before I knew it, I had crashed through the boom gates. A siren sounded and the train collided with my door.
