Valerie struggles to free her hand from Alex's strong grip but all fails as he kept driving. She started to panic a bit, which was apparent to him. Then he spoke:

"Why is it that you are so afraid of death? Why do you cower in the corner when you hear the word itself? Have some dignity for crying out loud!"

His words slashed through her as if she was cut with a dagger. She felt a lump in her throat and tried not to cry. She knew she could never show her tears to him, that would only make things worse.

"What do you want from me?!" Valerie cried out in a shrill, scared tone. "What?! My blood? Tell me!!"

Alex did not reply to her angery questions. He just kept on driving quietly with a straight face. No emotion showed whatsoever. Valerie wondered what was on his mind. She couldn't help that she was so curious, even in a dangerous situation.

"Are you okay?" Valerie asked dumbly but with genuwine concern.

They sat there in silence for some time and Valerie had just assumed that he wasn't going to answer.

"No, I'm not okay. I haven't been okay for the longest time. Is that good enough for you?" Alex had lost his unemotinal, stern face, it was now an expression of sorrow and maybe as if he was hurting inside as well. "Why do you even care?" He said in an annoyed voice.

Valerie was shocked by his behavior. Is he opening up to me? Valerie thought. Maybe I could finally have some answers to my questions...

"Umm...What exactly are you, Alex? Who are you? Can you tell me that?"

"What kind of questions are those?" He growled.

"C'mon, please tell me?" Valerie begged with a puppy-dog face.

He grunted in annoyance, but it seems he was choosing his words carefully. "I....I am...a..." He sighed and pulled over onto the grass on the dirt raod. A sign nearby said that this was the city limit. He put the car in prak and cut off the engine. "Okay, I'll tell you only if you promise not to tell anyone." Valerie nodded in agreement. "I am a half-vampire. I can't control my cravings, which usually makes things go very wrong."
