"So, you asked to go 'tutor' him just to get to his house?! Have you lost your mind?!" Danielle says to Valerie. Valerie told her what happened in homeroom, on her way to her last class.
"C'mon, don't think of it like that. You know I'm naturally curious! And right now, I'm naturally curious of Brandon's rare-condition brother. How can I find out who he is if Brandon won't tell me?"
"Fine. Do whatver you want. As long you don't involve me, I'm okay with it."
The school warning bell rang, Valerie and Danielle went their own ways. Valerie walks into her last class, English, and found Brandon once again. This time he sat in front of her. She went over to her seat and sat down. Brandon then turns around to face her.
"So. We meet again.", he says.
"I believe so."
"I have a question for you."
"Okay.....Ask it then."
"Alright, do you really want to 'tutor' me? Or just want to unraavel the mystery of my brother? Answer truthfully."
He caught her. Valerie didn't know how to respond to that. Okay, the truth or the lie?, she thought. She'll go with both.
"Well, I am a nice person who wants to help out other people and I am also naturally curious about mysteries and stuff..."
"So, you want to help out and quench your thirst of a mystery?"
"Well that's a weird way to put it, but yeah."
"Are you sure you want to do this?", Brandon said darkly.
That question sent chills down her spine. Why was he asking that? Valerie just needed to know...
"What do you mean? Is it not safe to be at your house or something? Is this about your brother's 'condition'?"
"Yes.....I-....." Brandon stopped as if he couldn't finish.
"What? What's the matter?"
"Never mind..." He looked away.
This gotten Valerie a bit ticked. Once you bring up something, you just don't drop it, you have to finish it.
"No! No, "never mind"! I hate it when people do that!" she said angerily.
He looked back at her, resisting the urge to smile.
"Don't you get it?"
"Get what?!?!?!"
Just as he was about to speak, the teacher asked for everyone's attention.
"Okay everyone. I want you to welcome our new student, Brandon."
Everyone either waves 'hello' or ignores him.
"Alright, today we're going to start a book called 'To kill a Mockingbird'. I'm pretty sure everyone has headr about it. If you have read this book, get ready to read it again."
Valerie groaned in disgust. She hated that book. It was so...old. Then Brandon passed back a note. It said:
I guess you have another subject to help me on...I never even heard of that book before. What about you?
She jotted some things in response, and gave it back. She wrote:
I read that book. It's boring. The only character Boo Radley, because he is so mysterious. :)
He sniffled a laugh and wrote back. It read:
Ha, ha, ha. What a coincidence. You are just so funny.
That made her giggle too. Once again she wrote back, which said:
Yeah, I know...I aspire to be a comedian. What do you think?
She passed it to him, he wrote back, and he passed it back.
Yes, that is so totally you. But, I'm pretty sure you can't make anyone else laugh. You look unpopular to me. The only empty seats are only by you. No offence.
Valerie didn't really take notice how true that was...
The teacher looked back at the class.
"Any questions to what I just told you?............No? Alrighty then. Get to work on the worksheets."
Valerie had no idea what was going on. She tapped Brandon on the shoulder. He looked back.
"Yes ma'am?"
"What was she talking about?"
"Just the preface of the book and that there would be a project we have to do when we fifnish the book."
"Oh. Okay.....I wasn't paying attention, as you can see."
"Yeah. I know. You don't pay attention in World History either!"
Valerie punched him in the arm.
"That wasn't nice to say!"
"And that wasn't nice to do."
They bust out laughing. The teacher noticed this.
"Get to work you two!"
So, they did. The worksheets were just to catch up on grammer. The book doesn't have much of that.
About forty-minutes passed and the bell to go home is about to ring.
"I guess you'll be taking my car, huh?", Brandon said.
"No, I'm going to walk.", Valerie said sarcastically.
They laughed as the bell rang. Valerie and Brandon walk to the parking lot. He stopped at a very nice silver Mustang.
"This is your car?!", Valerie exclaimed.
"Why, yes it is. Like it?"
"Yeah, I do."
He laughed again and opened the door for her.
"Thank you, you are such a gentleman.", Valerie cooed.
"No problem.", he smiled.
Brandon got in, started the car, and drove away from the parking lot. Valerie was very excited but in fear too. What if Brandon wasn't warning her just to scare her? What if he was serious? Too late now, she thought. Hoping that curiosity won't kill this cat........
