Chapter One
There once was a day when vampires and humans got along in peace. But that day is long gone and vampires are so close to extinction that all humans think they are just made up. But they aren't, they are building themselves up again and they are tired of fighting a losing battle with what's left of the vampire hunters. They have made me into one of them even though it is technically illegal to do so at my age. I am 17 years old and I am just a baby, a toddler to most of them. I am their experiment. They are trying to find a way to make vampires able to go into the sunlight and to touch holy things so they can stop being killed off. The only problem is the tests are severe and I have so many scars even though I am a vampire now. They are very nice to me but they are desperate to save their race. Besides, what's a little pain on one person to find a way to save an entire race? They feed me potions and put me in the sun and watch the results, so far the only results have been my screams and the burns on my arms. They have me wear a solution they concoct and have me touch a blessed cross or dip my hand in holy water. The only results to that have been my screams and my loss of energy. So far, it's been rough. I know it is for a good cause, but there is no improvement as of yet. I wish there was a little progress so my pain wouldn't be for nothing. They say once one of their potions or concoctions work, I'll get a whole month off. Some treat, huh? If I don't die I get a whole month off. As I sat waiting for them to send for me to test a new potion or concoction a knock came on my door. I was kept in one of the most lavished rooms with all expensive fineries around me. Like they thought having rich surroundings could make up for the pain I endured for, as of right now, no reason. Anyway, I got up and answered the door. It was my friend James. He usually didn't visit me in my room because the Elders didn't want me staying up late. After all, how could they truly trust the results of an experiment if the subject was abnormally weakened? "He said danger's coming and he needs to get you out of here." James said. I looked at him and laughed, "There's always danger doing what I do. Who is it that told you this?" I inquired. "No, not that kind of danger, I mean a worse danger." James replied looking sullen. "What could be worse than that?" I asked. "He says you're going to be turned into a werewolf and set against the rest of us. He says the werewolves will treat you horribly and control you." he said looking away. "Who is he?" I asked. "My name is Sean Rogers and I am here to save you from this miserable existance." a voice from the shadows responded. An intimidating teenager around my age came out of the shadows and looked at her. "What do you want with me? Why would you help me?" I asked instinctively. He gave me an amused look then replied, "How badly have you been treated that your first reaction to help is suspicion?" I looked at him and considered my words carefully then said, "If the Trojans had taken a peek inside the horse, they might have lived. But they trusted strangers and most of them died." I said. James looked at me in admiration, he was obviously afraid of Sean. I was too, but I refused to let Sean or James see it. Sean considered me for a few minutes in silence before smirking at me. I t was unexpected and it unnerved me. I hate being unnerved! He just stood there smirking at me like he knew it was driving me nuts. Finally I got fed up and asked, "So? Are you going to answer me or not?" That might have been overstepping the line but I hated being unnerved. I had the pleasure of watching his face change from a cocky smirk to a shocked stare. "I want to help you because it was foretold that if I save you I will find the love of my life. Also that you would one day rule us as the Queen of the Damned and we will all be free to walk in the sun and touch holy things. All I have to do is keep you alive." he said sounding so serious. I couldn't help it, I laughed. And laughed, and laughed, and laughed. Finally I stopped and looked at him to see that he was glaring at me. "I'm sorry. But that's the funniest thing I've ever heard!" I said still giggling. "Apparently." Sean said still glaring at me. If looks could kill, boy, I'd be a goner by now with those eyes! James was frightened and hiding behind me to avoid those eyes. Sean looked at James and said, "I thought you said she'd believe me? You said it would be easy to help her!" he looked back at me still glaring. "She's usually not this way. She's usually respectful and obedient." James said. I looked back and forth from James to Sean and back again. "Obedient, respectful, what are you guys talking about? James, what's really going on?" I asked getting seriously afraid now. "Now, now, calm down. It's not as bad as you think." James said and I noticed he sounded far more smooth than he usually did. He stopped hiding behind me and stood next to Sean so they were both facing me. Then I realized that James was a fake, and because I had believed him, something bad would more than likely happen. "Come now, don't be scared. We won't hurt you." Sean said. But I was scared and I knew they'd hurt me if they felt they had to. I bolted when they started coming towards me. I darted between them and down the hall way and kept going. I knew better than to look behind me. Soon I reached the kitchen where my frend, Cook, was. I found her and hid behind her as Sean and James came in right behind me. Cook stared shocked at the commotion. Sean looked at her and smiled. "Ah, good. Cook, it looks like you've caught her for us." Sean said. No, no, no! I was screaming in my head over and over. Cook and James were the only friends I had. If they were all on Sean's side, I had no reason to fight to survive anyway. Then Sean came around Cook and grabbed me and dragged me out for him to see. "You will do as I say, when I say, or I'll kill you got it?" he asked. "Kill me. I have no reason to live anyway." Then I stopped fighting and passed out.
