Chapter 3

Crystal sat in the car with her mom. They were driving to the library to get some books. Finally they pulled up and Crystal’s mom said, "I’ll be back in about twenty minuets. I’m going to run over to the grocery store real fast."

"Ok, see you in twenty!" Crystal called and walked up the stone steps. The air was chily and she could see her breath.

She walked in and went over to the teen section and started looking at the books. Then one caught my eye. It was lying on the table and had something in it. It was called True Legends of Fire, Water, Plants, and Ice.

She flipped it open and saw something f all out. It was a ring with a diomand. It was a big diomand in the shape of a snowflake.

She picked it up. She remembered that her friends had found jewels too. She ran to the nearest computer and pulled up her e-mail. As sure as could be there was one titled DO NOT OPEN!

She clicked on it and there was a picture of a girl with startling silver hair and icy cold eyes and on her finger was the same ring that crystal now had on hers.

Suddenly there was a loud crash outside. Crystal heard yelling and she checked out her books and ran outside there was a site she wished she’d never seen. There was a black pick-up truck in a head on collision with her mom’s little green slugbug.

The slugbug was in flames. Crystal ran to the car and saw her mom hunched over the steering wheel. She threw open the door and unbuckled her mom’s seat belt. Her mom had a big gash on her head and her arms were broken. Blood was all over the seats and the steering wheel.

Her mom groaned and Crystal went to the other side and pulled her out. "It’s going to be ok mom, the ambulance will be here."

"Crystal, I wish… I wish.."

"You wish what mom?"

"I wish you could know the truth," her mom gasped. And then she fell silent and her chest stopped rising with her breath.

Tears streamed down Crystal’s smokey face. She laid her head on her mom’s chest. She saw the other driver get out of her car.

"Oh, my dear are you ok?" the words slipped from her mouth.

Crystal looked up and saw the woman had black hair and was dressed western like. Crystal said nothing and just looked at her mom.

"Oh, that is a pretty ring, Crystal." The woman said. Crystal saw that she still had the ring on.

"How..how do you know my name?" Crystal asked.

"Oh, I know… may I see your ring?" The woman asked.

Crystal shook her head. Then the woman brought the book,"Oh, I see. That’s who you are." Crystal stared at the woman and snatched the book from her hands.

"What am I?" Crystal asked. Then sirens interrupted the conversation.

"Oh, you’ll find out Crystal, and you’ll be seeing me again, I promise." She had an evil tone to her voice and she took off running. Crystal’s mom was put into an ambulance and Crystal was left standing there clutching the book.

Crystal entered Ember’s house with her friends trailing behind. Crystal was to live with Ember now because, her dad was gone and her mom was too. She was led into a room upstairs and there was two beds all ready and made.

"Ember thanks so much. I’m so glad I don’t have to go to my aunts," Crystal shuddered and closed the door.

"I would do anything for my chum," Ember said and plopped down on one of the beds as so did the rest of the friends.

"You guys," Lilly said. "It’s true, look." She said and pointed to her earings and told how she had gotten them.

Crystal nodded and told them about the ring. "Weird," Brooke said and then Crystal toook out the book. She flipped to the first page.

"Look, read this," she said and pointed to a page divided into fourths with fire, water, plants, and ice. There was an inscription saying:

Four stones each waiting a soul to implant the powers

A ruby for the one born from the embers of fire

A sapphire for the one born from the brooks filled with water

An emerald for the one born from the lillies

And a diomand for the one born from the crystals of ice and snow

Each a power all of light

But one of darkness roams and wishes to kill

Danger awaits those who accept the powers of light

"Oh, my, gosh," Ember said. "What does it mean?"

"I don’t know," Crystal answered. "But I think it has to do with something about us."

Brooke nodded. "Wait, look. A ruby for the one born from the Embers of fire. A sapphire for the one from the Brookes. An emerald for the one born from the lillies and a diaomand for the one from the crystals of ice and snow."

"Oh my gosh. Did we accept the powers?" Lilly asked.

"Wait, did you guys get an e-mail?" Ember asked. The others nodded. "I think once we open it we accept the powers."

"So, I have the powers of ice and snow," Crystal said. Ember touched her hands and they were icy cold.

"See I think it’s already starting," Ember said and as soon as she touched Crystal’s hands they no longer felt cold but when she took them off they were cold once again.

Brooke touched Lilly’s earings and they felt like real leaves and when Lilly touched Brooke she felt like she had just gone in a pool.

"Why us?" Lilly asked.

"I don’t know, do you think that we are descendants from the women in the story my grandpa told me?"

The other girls nodded. "That’s what that woman meant when she said, ‘Girl born from the lillies, descnedant from Verdo."

"Yeah, but who is the darkness?" Ember asked.

"I think I know, there was the lady who drover her car into my moms, could it have been her? She knew my name and said we’d meet again," Crystal said.

"It might be," Ember answered. "But we can’t blame people and…it’s still a mystery."

The girls nodded and they looked out the window. Tears streamed from Crystal’s face and she hid her face in a pillow and she heard her friends get up and walk out of the room and closed the door. Crystal walked over to the window and as her tears fell on the window pane the air grew cold a sign that winter would come soon.
