Chapter 2
"What’s that?" Brooke asked Ember.
"It’s a necklace my grandpa gave me," Ember answered.
"I’ve never seen anything like it," Brooke said. "Can I see it?"
Ember nodded and took it off and handed it to Brooke. "Ouch!" Brooke said and dropped it on the table.
"What?"Ember asked retrieving the necklace.
"It’s burning hot!" Brooke answered rushing over to the sink and putting it under cold water.
"No it’s not," Ember answered putting it back on. "Huh," she said. "Oh, come look at this!" Ember went into the computer room with Brooke following behind. Ember turned on the computer and waited for the screen to come up.
Finally it did and Ember clicked on internet explorer and went to her e-mail. She clicked on the message that said DO NOT OPEN! And showed Brookes the picture.
"So?" she asked. "What’s the big deal?"
"Look at the necklace she’s wearing!" Ember answered and pointed. Brooke gasped and pointed to Ember’s.
"Who is she?" Brooke asked. Ember then told her the story her grandpa told her. "That’s weird," Brooke said after Ember filled her in on the details. Then a car beeped outside.
"My mom," Brooke said. The girls stood up from the table and walked to the door. They said goodbye and Ember watched as Brooke climbed in her car and drove home. Ember sighed and climbed up the stairs and back into her bed. She stayed awake wondering why that girl had the same necklace as her and who was she? Was the legend true?
Brooke walked through the mall her purse filled with thirty-two dollars. She had been given fifty to spend on clothes and she still had a lot left. She walked past a jewlery store and something caught her eye.
It was a bracelet with blue beads and a sapphire with an engraving of waves. She stared at it through the glass and she walked in.
"Excuse me," she asked a woman at the desk. "Um, how much is that bracelet over there?"
"Oh, that well, it’s $50," she said glanceing at the bracelet. Brooke looked down. "But there is a sale, that is 40% off," she said looking at Brooke.
"Seriously?" Brooke exclaimed, the woman nodded. "I have just enough…" The woman led Brooke to the glass case and took out the bracelet. They walked back to the cash register and Brooke pulled out the money and took the bracelet. She put it on so it wouldn't’get snatched out of her hands.
The bracelet was beautiful and she never wanted to take it off. She walked out of the mall and into the autummn air. And then she remembered that she was meeting with her friend Lilly and hurried outside and got on her bike and rode to Lilly’s house.
Lilly paced impationtly for Brooke to arrive. She had told her she might be late but not this late! Everyone else was there, Ember, Crystal and herself. Finally the dorrbell rang and when she opened the door there stood a tired panting Brooke.
"Sorry I’m late," she panted. She walked in and sat on the couch with the others. A bracelet with blue beads and a sapphire. She saw Ember looking at it.
"Where did you get this?" Ember breathed.
"You wouldn’t believe me, it was at this jewlery store in the mall, it was fifty bucks but there was a 40% discount. But she could have been being nice."
Ember grasped something around her neck and pulled out a necklace with a ruby and an engraving of a flame.
"Wait, Lilly do you have internet?" Brooke asked. Lilly nodded and led them down into the computer room. The computer was on and Brooke got on her e-mail. There as they thought was an e-mail that was titled DO NOT OPEN! But she opened it anyway. There as clear as could be was a girl with long hair like a waterfall and turqouise eyes.
"So what? It’s a picture," Crystal answered.
"No, but look," Brooke murmered and pointed to the girl’s wrist and there was the same bracelet as Brooke was wearing now.
"It’s just a drawing," Lilly said.
"No it’s not," Brooke said and her and Ember told their friends the story.
"But it can’t be because there’s…no such thing as magic!" Crystal burst out. Brooke and Ember shook there heads.
"You believe everything Ember!" Lilly said tears coming into her eyes.
"What are you crying for?" Brooke asked. Ember tugged on her sleeve and murmered, "It’s time to go." The two girls walked outside and rode their bikes home frustrated that Lilly and Crystal wouldn’t believe them.
"Why do you think Lilly blew up like that?" Brooke asked.
"She’s jealous, I can tell," Ember answered. "Some people are like that, you know?"
Brooke sighed in response and they rode to their house pondering what had just happened.
"It’s ok Lilly, why are you crying?" Crystal asked while patting Lilly’s back.
"I just….well, you know Ember and Brooke both had the same kind of charms and I thought they were friendship charms you know?"
Crystal nodded. "So did I but, I think they’re telling the truth, well, I have to get going but I’ll catch up with you later?" Lilly nodded and watched Crystal leave.
She walked into her room and closed the door. She thought about how it proably was real, her friends didn’t lie. Especially not to her. She walked out of the room and told her mom she was going to Ember’s house but really she was going to figure out the truth. She grabbed her purse stashed with sixty bucks that she had been saving and walked into town.
She walked past stores but then something caught her eyes. A glint of green and silver. She looked and saw grocery stores and bakeries but no jewlery or even an antique store so she continued on. Sun shone but it was still chilly and she was greatfull for the sun. Then she heard a voice behind her say, "You are pretty," she spun around and saw a woman in a brown cloak sitting by the bakery.
"Oh, thank you," she looked at the woman and saw her holding a cup jingling with coins. Lilly smiled and took ten dollars out of her purse and put it in the cup.
"That is far too much dear," the woman replied.
Lilly shook her head. "No, I have plenty and you need it more then I do."
"Let me repay you," the woman said and put two green earings shapped as leaves with the outlining silver.
"No, this is too much," Lilly answered.
It was the womans turn to shake her head. "You have been kind to me and I think you may have a use for it," she said.
Lilly smiled and said thank you and started walking off, then she hear the woman say, "Desndant of Verdo and born from the lillies."Lilly spun back around but the woman was gone. She ran back to her house and looked at her e-mails. One said , DO NOT OPEN! But she opened it and there was a girl with brown hair with vines and green eyes like holly leaves and there on her ears were the same earings.
