The Highway Man Chapter 2
|
That afternoon a storm hit so we had to bar and lock all the windows. Once everyone was asleep the storm had finally quieted down though no one bothered to unbar the windows. That’s when I heard it. I heard horses hooves and a whip suddenly hit the window. I figured it would just be the wind but then a song was whistled and I walked silently over to the window afraid the red-coats were coming. But when I opened the window there was a man on a beautiful stallion. He had a frenched-cocked hat, and lace at his chin. A velvet coat and breeches of brown-doe skin that seemed to never wrinkle, he had boots up to the thigh and his eyes had a certain twinkle to them. I though he was so handsome and irresistable I just stood there staring into his eyes. "You are beautiful young Bess." He said grinning. "How do you know my name?" I asked. He chuckled and replied, "Some beggers down the road said to stop at the inn and see the fair maiden Bess. Will you kiss me Bess? Just once?" I leaned over and kissed him it was magical. Then he said, "I’m after a prize tonight Bess. But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light. But they may press me sharply and may harry me through the day. But just look for me by the moonlight. I’ll come to you in the moonlight though hell shall bar the way." He then rose in his stirrups and could barly hold onto my hand then I loosened my hair and they fell across his chest and he kissed my long black hair and galloped away to the west.
