The Crying Face

Creative Created on 1-6-08 Views(53) Story Rating G

Some people think clowns have no thoughts but every drop of paint is a thought.

Above the fireplace stared back the crying face. It made people run away. If you were smiling it was crying...if you were laughing it was crying....if you were crying it was crying. The only reason for this is because it was the crying face. It was like a frozen image captured on a faulty camera.

'Don't turn away Jim'.....a voice said. It sounded like his Mother but was all distorted as though she spoke through a giant glass chimney. But Jim knew he had to turn away because the crying face was too scary for him to see.

Jim ran down flights of stairs to get away from it. He screamed out loudly 'Get away from me!' as he now faced the blustery air of a dead December storm. It was then he heard the sound of circus music playing and he saw the clowns playing in the snow. They were making snowballs and tumbling around trying to have fun. But their paint was coming off in the snow like blood. Their blueness attracted the moon. And all the colours blurred together like little lost rainbows in a microscopic river leading nowhere but to sorrows.

'Join us' they said to Jim and they all held hands in a circle with him. They sang out their clowns songs and began to cry as their makeup peeled and smudged and became lost in the snow.

Jim said 'Why do you cry now?'

The tallest clown said "because now you can see how sad we really are....that underneath we cry all the time". Then he howled as though he were not a clown but a wolf.  He howled and it echoed all over the town but noone could hear because it was so deep into the night. It resonated a sound deep within Jimmy. Jimmy ran home fast and even though he fell and his knees and elbows bled along the way....he still carried on running. Up the flights of stairs....to the fireplace mirror with two large candles alight beside it. He looked in the mirror and saw himself as he was always. The crying face that never changed. He reached out to touch it and the tears began to fall like snowflakes. It reminded him of the clowns dancing in the snow.
