I woke up in a soft bed. My vision returned slowly, but the pain was gone and I was safe. I found myself laying on my front. I tried turning over but I felt something stop me from moving and the pain returned, harder than last time. “Don’t move.” I heard someone say.“Who are you?” I asked “And why are you here?” “I work here”“Where am I?”“You’re at the Saint Johns Hospital. You were seriously hurt when you jumped in front of that rocket and crashed into the fence. You’re very lucky you’re alive. You have a piece of the fence lodged in between your shoulder blades. We are going to take you into surgery in a couple on minutes. Until then I will give you some morphine to ease the pain.”“Thanks.” The nurse left and came back a few times before I went into surgery. A couple of minutes to think were all I had, then I would be put to sleep and the surgery will begin. What was that thing that yelled BOOM? Is Chris alright? The nurse came back and she prepared me for the surgery ahead. I had to change my clothes, no matter how painful it was. “Can my friend come see me after my surgery please?”“It depends what your friend is called. A lot of students were injured when your school was destroyed. You were one of the lucky ones.”“His name is Chris.”The nurse didn’t have time to answer. I was put to sleep and carted into surgery. A few hours later I woke up in the bed again, in the recovery room. But this time I was lying on my back. I saw the nurse that took me into surgery. I called her over and asked if Chris could come see me.“Oh. I’m not quite sure how to tell you this but, your friend Chris, well, he isn’t really with us anymore.”
