Big Love In A Small Town Part 5

Romance Created on 9-1-07 Views(157) Story Rating G

Aria awoke with a start with her stomach aching worse than normal. She told her mom she didn’t feel well and went back to bed. At about 9:00am, Aria crawled out of bed, just in time to make it to the toilet. As she watched vomit pour into the toilet, she thought she was going to die.
“MOM!” She shouted in between convulsions. “Help…”
Everything went dark and for a second, Aria thought she might be dead. But then a light slowly came on and Aria saw what looked like the silver metal roof of an ambulance. She tried to sit up but felt as though her head was weighted down by a dumbbell.
    “Wha-” She stumbled for words.
“Hi Ms. Berkshire, I’m Jason.” Said a young male paramedic. “We don’t yet know what’s going on, but don’t worry, we will.”
    “Mom?” Aria asked.
“She’s following behind in her car, but don’t worry Ms. Berkshire, you’ll be fine. Probably just a really strong stomach flu.”
“Oh…” Aria stammered. “What about uh… school… tomorrow?”
“You’ll probably be out of school for about a week, maybe less.” The paramedic said like it was no big deal. “Don’t worry about it, I’m sure your teachers will understand.”
“Yeah…” Aria sighed. She hated missing school.
The ambulance made its way through the busy streets and down to the hospital without any trouble, but when they got to their destination, the stretcher ride was kind of bumpy and she puked for the second time that day. It’s amazing how much a girl with nothing in her stomach can make come out of it. The stretcher bumped through the doorway and into the emergency room. Aria cried the whole  time. Her mother ran through the doorway and smiled when she saw that Aria was alright.
The doctor came in and with many of those annoying mhmm’s, he turned to Aria. He tested her reflexes after making her sit up, did the normal breathing exercises and then took a glance at her Lymph Nodes. Feeling them, very carefully, the doctors eyes got wide.
“There is a very good chance that Ms. Berkshire here has cancer.” Those were the words that would forever change Aria’s life.
Her mind went crazy and she began to sweat. She shook as if somebody had just put a death sentence upon her. Right away, medics came from all sides and ran Aria back out to the ambulance she came from.
    “Where?” Aria managed to mumble.
“Children’s Hospital!” Jason yelled loud enough for Aria and the driver both to hear.
The ride over was almost uneventful. Aria already had an IV attached, every once in a while, they’d put something into the bag connected to it and Jason and Aria just chatted.
“Do you play baseball?” Aria enquired.
“I did, until I became a paramedic. Now I play for the hospital’s team, but that’s it.” Jason replied. “How about you? What sports do you play?”
“I play softball.” Aria coughed. “I’m a pitcher. I love the sport. I can’t get enough of it.”
“Awesome!” Jason said, truly excited. “So I bet you have the boys going crazy for you.”
“There’s one boy.” Aria managed. “I’m going to homecoming with him.”
“Ah, I see.” Jason said, sounding a bit disappointed.
“And all of the girls are just begging for you to go out with them, I’d bet.” Aria said, truthfully.
“I’m not very lucky in that department.” Jason said, just as they pulled into the hospital’s ER Entrance.
Suddenly the ambulance pulled to a stop and Jason helped lift Aria very carefully out of the back. They raced her through the hallway and down to the very last door. There, they drew blood from Aria’s already punctured arm. The tests came back the next morning while Aria was asleep on the 3rd floor in the cancer patient ward.
“Ms. Berkshire?” Doctor Stevens asked when he entered the room.
    “Yes?” Aria enquired.
    “I have some bad news.”
