The Last Case Chapter 19

Ian had gone back late the previous night, and now he was going to be late for work. “Crud. Okra… do you mind if…” “I’ll clean up the house, alright. Because you have been kind enough to spare me a rent-free stay at your amazing place.” Silence befell them for a full minute. Then Monstru broke the silence. “Well, I was about to say help me get my pants, but your answer’s real nice. No, don’t clean up my house. It’s already cleaned out. So, do you mind?” “Sure.” Draco had sighed from the next room. He’d had probably thought Ian was asking for something big.
As Ian left the building, he shuddered to feel the prying eyes of God, Okra and some unknown force… He drove quickly; it was close to seven-thirty in the morning, the same time he was supposed to report for work.

Jack had already an apartment in Brooklyn, he had only came to Manhattan for a while. His parents stayed in the other town, so his house was still under construction. Would that be a pro or a con? Only time will tell. Ian got ready to drive him across the bridge and hand him to the Police Department there. Except some people weren’t ready for him to leave just yet. “Sir, there’s another murder. This guy’s crazy!” Ian’s brows furrowed, and he frowned. “Get them to find clues at the site of the body. I need to send Hunter to Brooklyn.” “Okay… But they said something about you and meat…” He sighed and left the police officer to think about what he just said. Surely they could do it without him, just for a few hours, right?
Wrong. Apparently, they could only find the same globs of saliva. If they were smarter, they would look right under the bush, where the monster had left a big clue- a set of house keys. And they couldn’t find the person’s DNA profile either.

“Damn! Where the hell are my keys? I- Oh crud. Don’t tell me I left it at my house!” His car keys were in the ignition, but he realised the lock breaker to his home was gone. “Never mind. Are you comfortable, Jack?” What a bumbling idiot! Can’t he see who I really am? Can’t he see that I am the murderer? “Jack?” “Oh. Yeah, I’m fine.” “You look a little flushed, you sure?” “Yes… Just thinking.” And I still can’t believe you, the city’s greatest master detective, still can’t figure out this stupid easy case. He thought rather bitterly. “Okay. Just checking. I think I might see you soon, the case seems to close by itself…” And they talked all the way.

Ian came back some time later, holding a small bag. “Guys. What have you found?” “Just the saliva and the organ of Jason Nelson. A report was filed about him being missing just before we broke the news to his family.” Monstru left once more. Surely something else could be found at the city’s park where joggers frequent. And he picked up something under a nearby bush, one thing he couldn’t believe was there at all, something so unexpected it took him by surprise. He had found his own lost house keys. He pocketed it, and thought of finding another piece of evidence when he saw a tuft of hair- it resembled his own pitch black head fur.
“The DNA will come later, perhaps seven days after this had been sent. Wait. Doesn’t our victim have hazel hair? Then this must belong to the murderer!” “Look at our suspect profiles. Any of them have black hair?” “You, Hunter, Freddy Unschuld, Norman Olsen, Anthony Jest and Kevin Gretchen.” “”Scratch Hunter off.” “That leaves you-” “I get it. Send out our best sniper to the trainer’s course.” “Yes, sir.”

“He’s going to realise it very, very soon… perhaps tomorrow or today.” Satan sighed and called for Draco, who was still living in Monstru’s apartment on Earth. “Yes, father?” “GET BACK DOWN HERE! I DON’T WANT HIM TO FORGET WHO HE IS… Be here as soon as possible.” His son reluctantly agreed, after all, one of his sons was going to Brooklyn, and he was in Manhattan with Ian.

Ian entered the butcher shop, hoping to get some meat. But that night seemed a little misty and eerie, and soon, his body totally left his control, as if something else was inside his ravenous body, just waiting to break free of his hold and feed on flesh. “This is not me…” He fought to gain his strength from the inner demon, who apparently finally found a way to push the other without his consent. In fact, the stronger had been there for so long, only without himself realising it. He had been successful in blocking the urges last time, but why couldn’t he fight back now? Was he so weak from the battle that he couldn’t find his limbs?

Hunter ate his dinner, wondering about his ‘brother’, Monstru. “So, Jack, how have you been?” His elderly mother asked. “Fine, mum, thanks.” “You don’t seem to agree very well with the spinach broth, can I get something else?” “Raw meat?” Aghast was not even enough to describe the horror etched on her face. His father dropped his spoon, and dirtied the table cloth. Boy, did he have a lot of explaining to do.

Monstru strode towards the counter, always having a hand pushing away Ian. The demon had won his body, the one identical to his own being. Felicia had done a good job in deciding which grandson he could have. The fat man tending to the meat watched his feline movement, suspicious of this man with a different attitude, and a suspect for the murders. “Ah… Should I have fat meat or lean meat tonight?” “How about today’s special?” “Hand it over.” The obese meat-seller gave him the package and Monstru left. The devil inside him had given him more time to stay, and he could taunt the ignorant fool.
