The Last Case Chapter 16
|
Lieutenant Fraser walked into Ian’s office. “Permission to report, sir!” “Go on. And please don’t use something so formal to me.” “Okay. The cadets are ready to meet you at the academy. Some ladies even scribbled that you’re hot in the toilets, the cleaner said.” Monstru couldn’t resist a grin. “That’s crazy! For real?” “Yeah. Wait till they see how mean you are!” Fraser was a great cop, and Ian liked him. He gave him the place he was trying to get -and earned it by the way- being a teacher at the Police Academy.
“Cadets, I’m really excited to speak with you, but at the same time, I have prepared a course in which who can beat me will get an advancement in physical training. Mind you, none had gone by me before, or at least they failed to get past me later.” All gaped at him. No way! They just had another session with a mean coach! Now this? With the Chief himself? He’s crazy!
He spoke a short speech, going straight to the very point, and also some additional information not needed, like about the forensics team who didn’t really keep the place clean. But they didn’t mind it; they were there listening and taking down notes so that they would know what the officers did to the body. Then, he summoned the students out in the yard. There were many impossible tasks awaiting them, but they had to try anyway.
“On you mark, get set… Wait!” Some started sprinting. “False start. Always listen to the commands carefully. Okay. On three… One… Two… TEN!” But none had moved. “Good. Go!” No one except Monstru moved. Their brain processed it three seconds late, and only two managed to get ahead of Monstru, running towards the first obstacle with the best they had. Slipping on the bullet-proof vests, they slowed down when they started to shoot. Monstru passed them without a vest, with all the lead being let out. Every one of them missed. They got past later, and ran past Monstru again. The ropes were there, but Ian scaled it before any of them could even feel the knot tied on it; he was climbing like a spider on the wall. They eventually gave up, and jogged to the other obstacles.
“None can beat me. Oh well. I told you before, even if they did get to get ahead, I would still win at he end. This is the second class I have gone with within these two months. Ah! I nearly forgot my appointment with my nephew… See you in a week or so…”
Jimmy Monstru held Ian’s hand as they walked into the rather posh apartment. “So, what shall we do today?” “How about a game? I have a new pair of dice. Risk?” “Nope. I was thinking maybe we could make something… a boat perhaps?” He asked with a twinkle in his eyes. Of course! Ian was saying in his mind, the boat race was the following week. “Sure… I know where we can get the best wood for building… then we’ll get some electronic stuff. At the best electricians, perhaps?” “Yeah! But do you know engineering? Thought you only knew how to be a cop and a detective.” “No, I have to admit, but we’ll try. I did do a little in high school.” “Cool! Let’s go!” Ian brought him into his Lamborghini, and drove off to the hardware store.
They finished assembling it in the late-afternoon, a few hours since their trip to the stores. The circuits, wires and controls were a tad bit hard to put together, but they managed in the end. “Thanks, Uncle Ian!” “You’re welcome Jimmy.” He handed him both the boat and remote control when Charlie arrived to pick him up. “Thanks again, cousin, for taking care of him. We’ll see you some time soon!” Ian once again had his lips curling… but what made him do it? Was it pure pleasure of helping his nephew? Or was it something more sinister?
The birds flew into their cages, and the park closed. The zoo kept their main attractions in order, just before signing off. But there was one animal hat they forgot to chain. A panther, one that was brought in by a hunter who could not afford to keep a slowly dying cat that had pitch black fur. It was only brought in two weeks ago, and it still had its hunting instincts. “A panther, eh? Maybe it might catch the serial killer. We’ll leave it…”
“A dark big feline? Easy. How about its intestines? Or the whole abdomen?” “I’m thinking whole abdomen…” The two monsters smiled at the unexpected appetiser they were going to have. “Say… Who are you guys? Oh… hey-” His life was silenced, and the swift animal caught its scent. Not a good thing. But fortunately, the deadlier demon’s nostrils flared, indicating that he had smelled something amiss. “The cat… It’s here…” With that, he pounced, and wrestled with the predator supposedly stronger than him…
The topaz-eyed one just watched, then he felt a tingle of chill. “Hello… Hunter… I think you know who I am… I’ve been killed by you before… But, I have a proposal for you… Will you be my-” She was interrupted by another one next to him. “My, my… Out to break another heart?” The panther had slipped, but they would give chase later.
