The Last Case Chapter 5
|
Jack nudged Ian awake. “You‘re going to be late for work, honey…”he imitated old Caroline Ingrid. “Caroline… I just want to stay here and spend time with you… Darling, I know I look funny, you can stop sniggering now…” Ian, with his eyes still closed, grabbed Jack and kissed him on the lips. His hug only tightened as Jack squirmed. “I won’t let that Paul get you again…” He kissed him again after gasping the line. He finally broke the kiss and screamed when he opened his eyes. “Jack! I can explain!” “It’s no wonder your girl left you…” “Oh, shut up!” Ian wrestled him on the bed, with him emerging victorious. “Okay, okay… I won’t do it again. I don’t want to get kissed by you. Caroline might get jealous.” A punch barely missed him, and they got off the bed when the phone rang down the hall.
“Chief Detective Monstru, what’s the matter?” “Ian! More Pit-bulls, cats and squirrels dead! Oh, and Mum wants me to tell you that you’re not to come for the reunion.” A sigh was heard. “Right.”
He beckoned to Jack, and drove the Lamborghini out to the police station.
The rest laughed after listening to Jack’s account of his stay at Ian’s place. “I don’t see it too funny. And besides, he has a strange taste in his mouth.” They laughed even louder. Ian could be humorous if he wanted to. “Jack, do you mind assisting me in my case? I need help on it.” “Sure.” Patrick came in. “Him? In the case? I bet he can’t even find a clue! Much less solve it with us!” “Ah… Dear brother, then, tell me, have you solved a drug case single-handedly in one day? That won’t beat my time, but all the same.” He blushed, and walked away. “Listen to your words brother. Listen to them…” The door slammed. Ian smiled, one with genuine pleasure wreathed in every wrinkle near his grey lips. Was that a rare giggle from his throat? Ever since his girlfriend’s death, he had frowned, never smiling towards them. Only curling his lips when great news- Paul’s death and disappearance- was released, and Jack himself. Kids were understandable.
Paullina ruffled through the stacks, and took out one sheet. “Sir, the newest police academy graduates are here for the testing for the job. They are waiting at the forest, entrance of trees checkpoint.” “Thank you Paullina. I’ll need the tester’s copy of score sheets.” He gently removed the sheet from her hands and left. “Jack, come along. I’ll need assistance for this one.” Patrick scowled as Ian’s newest assistant, an intern who will replace Ian temporarily when Ian would leave for a holiday in twelve days after the case had been solved.
“I am sure you all know me. My success story must have been told over in the academy itself. Now, I will greet you properly. You are going to go through the different stages of a policeman. Once you are done, you will be a constable, then other positions await your skills. Now, I and my assistant, Jack Hunter, will help you if you have a giant injury at the end.” Ian continued with the briefing for five more minutes, then called all at the starting line. “I will go through this with you. Try to outrun me, or get through the stations the best you can. Ready, on your mark, get set…” Hugh Olsen piped, “I heard Ian will reward you if you can beat him, and mind you, he’s hard to beat. That’s what David said!” “GO!” They were at least seventeen meters behind when Ian screamed out the command and watched as the last took off.
He emerged first, but none had beaten his time. “Geraldine is good… Hugh is smart… and Samantha… even a pre school kid knows how to solve the equation. Blondes off! They failed very badly. The only failures are Samantha Krill, John Green, Mandy Myers, and Zinnia Teresa. The rest passed. Report to the station, we’ll hand you your basic items, and basic ground rules. I’ll see you later. Come on, Jack, let’s walk back. Patrick should be done with my car by now.” The participants watched as Monstru ran as police Dobermans chased the detective. “See you later!”
The dogs stopped, and ran back as the men on duty called them back. “IAN! BLOOD IN THE CAMP CABIN! COME BACK!” The Chief detective appeared a few seconds later. “The students camping here has gone missing. Go. Find the bodies in the woods. NOW!” A snarl so viciously released reawakened the men, causing them to do as he ordered. “The rest of you. Go home. Passers to come back to the station tomorrow morning.” “We have a murderer to contend with…” His V-shaped eyebrows wasn’t able to show his deep seriousness, nor his anger. This serial killer took something dear from him. And the price to pay is greater than any amount of money in the world… But Monstru might actually love this murderer… This great man had killed his arch rival in love…
Jack held his shoulder. “Ian, relax. He will be caught.” Another snarl. “He will pay the price… He will give me his life!” His blood caused him to really put the feeling into those words. His eyes flashed a colour of scarlet. “He will pay… with his flesh and blood… his soul be damned to hell… I want his gift from his parents to decay… As Paul’s had…” An evil chuckle was heard. Topaz were Jack’s eyes. “Interesting…” “Or maybe, he will go, Caroline had done wrong, as well as Paul, and I hate both of them… They betrayed my trust, and I think I’m beginning to like this murderer…”
“Their bodies aren’t anyway here… but the graves are bloodied. We’ve checked, nothing but the rotting human corpses, that look as though they were recently buried. I swear, and to God be blessed, their graves read years back, starting from 1823.”
Walking towards the nearest house on the hill, or rather the place where bodies were found, a certain blood thirst made the detective pause. A squirrel scampered past him, and he trailed it, before they heard squeaks coming from within the woods, with Monstru standing and seemed to gobble down something on his hands. Jack was doing likewise beside him, except not as savagely as Ian. “Guys, did you bring grub? How did you smuggle… OH MY GOD!” They had turned around to see Constable Randall Wilkins watch them, and in their hands were dead animals, a squirrel in Monstru’s and a small sparrow on Hunter’s. “You guys really do live up to your names. I’ll pretend not to have seen this.”
They both got up and wiped the blood off their mouths. With the extra energy boost, they ran to the house, where gasping officers stood. Nothing was there except for two skulls and a shin bone. Blonde hair was every where. These police academy students seemed remarkably familiar, but he couldn’t put his finger on it.
The time of sunset fell, by then, the folder was updated, ‘Two more dead, police academy students all fail every component; trained by Paul Terrier in Advance Mathematics two years before his death. Four more missing students in the woods, but no trace. Blood-stained grave stones, only fresh corpses inside. Forensics show the same DNA as the one on Paul Terrier and Caroline Ingrid.’ “Everyone to evacuate. Armed gangsters at Riverview Park.” They got off their seats, and drove auxiliary vans to the place.
The law-breakers weld machetes, machine guns, throwing daggers, and rifles. Gabriel Johnson had escaped again. “Monstru! You will die. In a duel between both of us, hand-to-hand combat.” “Okay. You’d probably play dirty again.” The battle was the most tense, and everyone stopped what they were doing just to watch.
Gabriel lunged first, but Ian dodged his blow. Pinning him down from behind, Ian whipped out a clawed hand, but he was thrown off by the heavier man. The eerie growl from Ian rocked the gangsters’ leader a bit, and he pulled out a gun, and shot five times at Ian. “You only burnt my blazer jacket. How are you going to catch me, ‘tiger’?” He looked up. There was a grin filled with blood lust, and ruby eyes that reflected evil and the predator’s need to kill.
Pointing the gun towards the face, he pulled the trigger, but the face disappeared from above. “Monstru! Come out and fight like a man, coward!” “Nobody calls me coward. Besides, your gun’s out of ammunition. And you aren’t fast enough to kill me with your machete. Revolvers are so last century…” Enraged by the truth he had spoken, he whipped out his only dagger and threw it behind him. The biting of metal was heard, then, and as he turned around, a sharp and painful feeling invaded his private area.
Looking down, his dagger was protruding at his crotch, and his enemy was staring at him, and shot him another dagger he picked up from the ground, into his stronger arm- the right one. “As I had mentioned, you’re my prey…” He bellowed maniacally and hysterically. Then, he lunged at Johnson, who was screaming from both fear and pain. His shoulders were pinned down, and cool drool dropped onto his face. Ian’s jaws turned into a shark’s, his mouth filled with canines sharp enough to tear him apart. Jack was enjoying this, his eyes strangely flashing gold every few seconds.
Two others wrestled Ian from the squirming man. He regained his composure, picked up his burnt suit blazer, and stood up properly. He glared at the gangsters surrounding him. “Jail? Or rehabilitation centre?” “JAIL!” The messed-up people went away group by group in police auxiliary vans. “Jack? Were you disturbed by how I almost killed him?” “No. I was quite excited…” Every by-standing person went back home, even some of the police.
“Chief Detective Monstru, what’s the matter?” “Ian! More Pit-bulls, cats and squirrels dead! Oh, and Mum wants me to tell you that you’re not to come for the reunion.” A sigh was heard. “Right.”
