“So, are you enjoying yourself tonight?” Gavin asked Madi, who was nervously playing with her salad. “Of course I am,” She replied, “This place is really nice. How did you find it?” They were sitting in the corner of a small restaurant that was packed from wall to wall with people. It smelled of noodles and tomatoes, and Madi loved how it was dimly lit. There were small antique lights hanging above each table, which helped create a romantic aura throughout the place.

“Well, my parents used to come here when they were teenagers, and they used to bring me when I was little,” he told Madi, and she could see pain in his eyes as he continued. “After Mom passed away when I was twelve, Dad didn’t bring me in here anymore. In fact, he stopped spending time with me period. I think that maybe I remind him too much of Mom or something.” “I’m sorry to hear that Gavin.” Madi said, hoping it would comfort him a bit. “I know what it is like to lose someone you love.”  “Yeah, well even though my dad doesn’t pay me any attention, he is always giving me money. Him and mom and opened me a bank account when I was born, and it was supposed to be just for college, but ever since mom passed away, he has been putting more in every month for me to go out on and just have to spend. I think it is his way of kind of paying me to leave him alone,” Gavin said.

“Wow. That’s pretty pathetic of him,” Madi replied, “Me and my dad are pretty close, I’m glad to say. He has always been close to me, especially ever since Shawn died.” “Who’s Shawn?” Gavin asked. “He was my boyfriend. He passed away in a car accident about two years ago.” Madi replied. Gavin could tell that Madi had started to look uncomfortable talking about Shawn with him. He couldn’t help but to feel bad for her. She must have been really close to that guy, he thought to himself. “Well, enough of all this serious talk. Why don’t I walk you back to your dorm room?” Gavin asked, trying to change the subject. “Ok,” Madi replied.

Madi and Gavin slowly walked back to her dorm, talking about nothing in particular at all. Madi couldn’t help but think about how comfortable she felt around him. She was never so open about Shawn to someone she had just met. But there was something different about Gavin. He didn’t seem to just want to get her pants like all the other guys that always hit on her. He seemed like he really did just want to get to know her. And for the first time in a long time, she was actually interested in getting to know another guy.
