Eric stopped by the hospital after school that evening. As hard as it was going to be, he felt like he needed to be by Bri’s side, even though he wasn’t sure if she would even know he was there. On his way there, he stopped at a local floral shop. When he walked in, he was greeted by a cheery florist. “Can I help you?” she asked. “I need to buy some flowers for a friend,” Eric replied. “What’s the occasion?” asked the florist. “Well, my friend is in the hospital, and I think she would like it if I brought her some flowers.” Eric replied, trying not to tear up, “Her favorite is Gerber Daisies.” “Well, I can certainly help you with that,” she said walking towards a cooler filled with flowers.

As Eric walked through the lobby of the hospital, he looked down at the bouquet of pink flowers he held in his hand. He thought of how nice it was for the girl at the floral shop to wrap them so pretty, even though he knew Bri wouldn’t be able to see them. “It’s the thought that counts,” he thought to himself, “Besides; when she wakes up I want her to be able to see that I do care about her.”

All Eric knew was that Bri had been in an accident. He just assumed that she had overdosed on some drug that she may have found around the house. But when he walked into her room and saw her lying on the bed, all bruised up, he was utterly shocked. Bri’s brother, Matt, was sitting in the chair beside her bed. Matt was away in college now, but must have come back when he heard about Bri. He and Bri had been pretty close growing up, and two years ago when he went off to college, Bri had taken him leaving pretty hard. It wouldn’t have been so bad, but she had felt like he had abandoned her, being he had moved 6 hours away. Their parents had only had him and Bri, and they had never been very good parents to either one of them. Their father was always at work, and their mother never had time for them. Eric knew how alone Bri had been the past two years, but he had never thought it was bad enough that she would consider suicide.

“Let’s step in the hall for a minute,” Matt said to Eric when he saw the shocked look on his face as he gazed at his baby sister. Eric followed Matt into the hallway, trying to figure out what was going on. “What exactly happened to her?” he asked Matt as they walked a little way down the hall to the empty waiting room. “Bri ran away from home. I have a feeling she was running to me.” Matt then paused and took a deep breath. “We aren’t sure exactly what happened. She was found on the side of Highway 90, unconscious. All we can tell right now is that she was beat and raped.” “Do yall have any idea who could have done this?” Eric asked. “No, but mom and dad hired an investigator to look into it. We really won’t know anything until she wakes up. And that’s if she wakes up and can actually remember anything. The doctors aren’t sure if she will make it or not.” Matt said, as his eyes started to tear up. “Can I be alone with her for a minute?” Eric asked. “Sure, go ahead.” Matt replied, “I know she would want you to be with her right now.”

Eric took Bri’s hand in his as he sat down next to her. Her hand looked so small and delicate in his. “Oh Bri,” he said, “I am so sorry this happened to you. I promise to God I will find whoever it was and make him pay for this!”
