{A Short Pause Before Death} Chapter 1
|
"Go away," Sarah called down the stairs to her mother in the kitchen. Sarah stared out the window at the little blue jay as it flew away. "I wish you'd take me with you." She whispered to herself as it flew farther and farther until it was out of her sight. The sound of expensive shoes hitting hard wood stairs became loader. Sarah moaned in anger as she turned to see her mother standing at the door of her room. She sat on the bed and combed back Sarah's long brown hair with her plastic finger nails. "I'm going to need you to stay at Grandma's for a little while longer while mommy goes and works on her album down in Nashville, alright?" Her mother said in a soft voice. "How longs a 'While' going to be this time?" Sarah asked angrily. "Only a few months, darling' and don't worry, I'll be sending you a postcard so you can write me any time you like." She answered. Sarah sighed. What a waste of paper, writing to her mother. Who did she think she was? She thought. "Alright," Sarah sighed. Her mother stood up and kissed Sarah on the forehead. As she walked out the door, she turned and said, "I should be home before you turn 14." To bad, she would not be back in time for that. Sarah's birthday was a week ago, and her mother forgot, again. The minute her mother left, Sarah hopped in the shower with all her clothes on. She sat in the corner, letting the icy cold water beat down upon her troubled head. She had done this since she was five and her mother left for the first time to visit Nashville. It was her little method of "Drowning" away her troubles. Although she tried as hard as she could, Sarah could not keep the tears from falling down her cheeks. The bathroom door opened as her Grandmother entered the room. She bent down beside her grandchild and turned off the shower. Sarah looked up at her angrily. "Don't you dare give me that look," She said. "I've done nothing wrong to you or anyone for that matter. Now all that anger you have, I want you to forget about it. Now buck up little solider, and come down stairs, we will watch Edward Scissorhands on the couch." Grandma turned toward the door. "Only after you dry off."
