Chapter 4

Venus awoke that morning with a smile on her face. She looked at the alarm clock. 12:00, noon. She hurried into the shower realizing she had slept in. After word she walked over to her closet and pulled out a black tee and a pair of ripped jeans. She applied her make up and headed out the door.

Out side, Venus saw the beautiful scenery. The trees were green and the sky was blue. Venus hated it. The only sign of darkness was Devin talking to an impound truck driver trying to get his black car back. Then Venus realized what was going on. Last night they were in such a hurry to get out of the mall, they forgot the car, and worse than that , they forgot Vogue at the mall. She hoped Devin didn’t get in to too much trouble. After the truck left behind his car, he got in and began driving over to Venus. The window rolled down and his head poked out. “Hey are you ok,” he asked. ”Ya know form last night?”

“Yeah I’m fine,” She replied, “But what I’m more concerned with is if your alright.” Devin’s expression went sad.

“Hey hop in,” he said changing the subject. He opened the passenger door. “I wanna take you somewhere” Devin smiled sweetly and seemed to glow, or maybe it was the sun beating down on his face. Either way, Venus got in the car and went with him. They drove for about a mile and stopped on the side of an old country road surrounded by forest. Venus couldn’t believe how beautiful woods could be, but being with Devin made it more beautiful than it already was. Wait what was she thinking? Like he’d really share the same feelings as she did for him. The hardest thing to remember is that , Devin isn’t Rodney. He could never replace Rodney.

A look of depression hit Venus’ face. This worried Devin terribly. He feared that she would want to leave this place, or leave him. He had to do something, and quick. “Venus,” he began reaching for her hand, “this is not an order, but come with me, I wish to share something close to me with you,” His heart about stopped when she held his hand. She couldn’t help but to smile.

Devin led her deep into the forest. Just as Venus began to doubt Devin’s sense of direction, he calmly whispered, “It’s along those two trees up there,” he pointed to two trees up ahead. The sound of rushing water filled the air and the smell of moss reached there noses.

The sun peaked in through the trees and put a blinding light in her eyes. Then everything became clearer. All the grass was green and birds chirped. There was a small water fall filled with sparkling water surrounded by a field of flowers. It was so beautiful, but the beauty of the scene made Venus feel angry and scared. Scared of falling any further for Devin. A tear filled her eye. Devin wiped it from her eye. She bit her bottom lip and hugged him. He held on to her and began to cry, but held it back. “Never let go,” she quietly whispered.

“I wouldn’t if my life depended on it,” He whispered back to her, but this time with tears in his eyes. She pulled away from him.

“No!” she cried, “you don’t mean that, your lying!” she began to run but tripped on a fallen branch. Devin ran after her. He lifted her off the ground. She slapped him away.

“Leave me alone!” she cried, with tears streaming out of her eyes.

”Why?” he asked. He too had tears streaming out of his eyes. “why would I ever want to do that? What’s wrong with me?” Venus held herself while she shook. Devin’s anger grew, then stopped. He looked at her with dismay. “What are you so afraid of?” His voice was as soft and comforting. She didn’t answer, she just stood there. In a puddle of tears.

“I’M AFRAID TO LOVE YOU!!” She yelled at him. “OKAY? IS THAT A GOOD ENOUTH ANSWER FOR YOU?”

“Why would you fear that?” he asked so confused and frustrated.

“Because….” She paused. “You wouldn’t love me back” Devin held her in his arms and kissed her quietly.

“You shouldn’t assume so much,” he gasped then kissed her again, “Because I might just return your love”

“We better get home,” Venus realized looking at her watch. It was mid-night.

Devin drove her home. He walked her to the door step. “Well, here we are,” Devin stuttered nervously.

“How’s that for a first date?” Venus laughed.

Devin pulled out a skull ring and put it on her. It had diamonds in the eyes and engraved inside were the words” Believe me ” Venus’ eyes widened.

“I bought it while you were waiting for me at the food court.” She stared down at it and smiled. Venus wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him again.

“I’m not afraid anymore” She breathed.

“Don’t ever let go,” he quoted her. He kissed her again and let go knowing she had to go in the house. “until tomorrow.”

“Until tomorrow” she agreed.
