 Chapter 11

It was almost eleven in the morning and Rachel was laying in her hospital bed, slightly depressed. She missed her friends and she missed Brian. In her mind, she felt healthy and didn't want to go through with this surgery. It didn't seem real to her. She wished it was all a dream and she'd soon wake up in Brian's arms in a hotel somewhere. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the phone ringing. She jolted back to reality and picked it up.

          "Hello?" Rachel said.

"Hey, there, sexy girl!" said Brian's voice. "How are you, love?"

"Okay, I guess," she said softly.

          "That doesn't sound very assuring."

"I just really don't want to be here," Rachel replied, close to tears.

"I know, baby. I wish I could be there for you," he said in a sad tone.

"Are you guys in Vegas yet?" Rachel asked, changing the subject.

"Yeah, we just got here a few hours ago. We're in a van, getting ready to go to a radio show."

Rachel could hear the sound of Nick's laughter. "Is that Nick?" she said with a giggle. "I can hear him cackling."

"Yeah," Brian said with a laugh. "He's had too much coffee this morning and not enough sleep. Never a good combo for him. Here, hold on," Brian said quickly.

Rachel heard the shuffling of the phone and Brian's muffled voice talking to Nick. The phone shuffled again and she heard Nick on the line.

"Hey, hey, hey! Wazzup!" he said in a sqeaky voice.

Rachel laughed. "Hey, Nick," she said between giggles.

          "How are you, darling?"

          "I'm okay," Rachel said softly.

"Well, I just wanted to say that we're all thinking about you and Howie just farted and it really smells in here."

Rachel busted up laughing. "Thanks for the update, Nick."

"No problemo! Here's Brian. Love ya!" he said quickly.

Brian got back on the phone. "I told you he was hyper," he said.

"Yeah, apparently so," Rachel replied with a smile. Her smile slowly faded as she played the phone cord. "Brian?"

"I'm still here," he said softly.

"I'm so scared," Rachel said in almost a whisper.

"I know, sweetie. It'll all be for the best. You'll see," he assured. "I hate to do this, but I've gotta go. I love you, baby."

"I love you too, Brian," Rachel said as tears streamed down her face.

"I'll call you tomorrow to check up on you, okay?"

          "Okay," she replied.

"Bye, honey," Brian said the blew kisses into the phone before hanging up.

Rachel hung up the phone and dried the tears from her eyes.  She sat in her hospital bed staring at the plain white wall. Letting out a sigh of apprehension, she looked out the window. It was cloudy and gloomy outside.

"Perfect weather for a day like this," Rachel said quietly to herself.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. She shifted her eyes over to the door. There stood Kristin.

"Mind if I come in?" Kristin asked.

"Of course not," Rachel said, sitting up a little. "Ow!" she shouted. "Stupid IV," she said with a groan.

          "I'm sorry," Kristin said.

"It's okay. It doesn't hurt too bad."

Kristin looked apprehensively around the room. "All hospital rooms look the same. I haven't seen one since my grandma died," she said softly then narrowed her eyes down to the floor.

"Kris, take a seat you're making me nervous." Kristin took a seat in the chair next to Rachel's bed. "You okay? You look frightened."

Kristin sighed. "Sorry, it's just that every time I step foot into a hospital the memory of my grandma dying of cancer comes back to me."

"Oh, Kris, I'm so sorry," Rachel said in sympathy.

"It's okay. My grandma's in a better place now. I'll see her again someday. I believe she's my guardian angel and she brought you to me. I was alone until we met," Kristin said as tears formed in her eyes. She caught herself and blinked back her tears. "But anyway, how are you holding up?" she asked, changing the subject.

"I'm doing better than I thought I would. I figured I'd have a nervous break down."

"I just got off the phone with Nick before I came in here."

          "What did he say?"

"He didn't have much time talk. They were getting ready for some radio show.  Apparently, he's had too much coffee."

Rachel chuckled.  "I know.  I talked to Brian a few minutes ago and he let Nick talk to me.  He was all hyped up."

Kristin shook her head.  "That boy is a nut case, but I love him."

          "Yeah," Rachel replied softly.

          "You're scared aren't you?"

Rachel let out a loud sigh. "Terrified is more like it." There was a long pause. "Kristin, I need you to do me a favor."

          "What's that?"

"If I don't make it...tell Brian I love him," she said with a quivering voice.

Kristin placed her hand over Rachel's. "Rach, you'll get through this. I promise."

          "Lets hope so."

Just then, a nurse came in. "Are you ready Miss Crawford?"

Rachel burst into tears. "Rach, we're all praying for you. You'll be just fine." Kristin assured.

Rachel wiped the tears from her eyes and laid back in her bed. The nurse rolled the bed out of the room and into the hall. Rachel felt as if she was going in slow motion. She sound of the nurse's footsteps echoed down the hallway. The lights from above flashed so brightly they were almost blinding. Finally the bed reached two sliding doors and she was in the operating room. Two other nurses came and helped her onto the operating table. The table felt cold on her back. Oh, god, here we go, she thought to herself. Looking to her right she could see a tray of operating utensils. One of the nurses put a gas mask over her face. Rachel slowly breathed in the gas and tried to relax. Enjoy this moment....it could be your last, she thought, then everything went black.

Chapter 12

A week had passed after her surgery and Rachel was sitting in the living of the Littrell's house.  She was very bored and lonely.  Kristin had gone grocery shopping with Jackie and Rachel was left alone with the TV.  She sighed as she flipped through the channels.  There was nothing on except boring movies.  Rachel heard her cell phone go off and looked over at the table.  It was barely within her reach, but she grabbed it before her voice mail picked up.

          "Hello?" she said softly.

"Oh, sorry, did I wake you?" said Brian.

"No, I was just lounging on the couch," Rachel said as she pulled her blanket up.

          "How are you feeling?"

"Really tired," Rachel said with a soft groan.  "And sore."

"Yeah, you're gonna be for about three weeks.  Just keep resting and eat as often as you can."

"Ugh," Rachel said in disgust.  "I haven't been able to eat since the surgery.  Your mom makes me eat toast, but that's about all I can handle."

"Sounds about normal.  Just keep eating that until your appetite comes back.  Have you tried walking around?"

"Only a little around the house.  I can walk up the stairs, but I have to stop about every third step.  I spend most of my time in the living room."

"Sounds like you're doing okay, though.  Has mom been smothering you?" he said with a snicker.

"No, not too bad.  She's been really nice.  She'll help me get up when I need to and make sure I'm getting my medication on time.  She's been really helpful."

"Good, I'm glad you're having an easy recovery.  Listen, I gotta go.  I just wanted to check on you.  We'll be in Lexington in five weeks.  I can't wait to see you," he said softly.

"I know, I miss you too," Rachel said with a smile.  "I love you."

"I love you too, baby.  I'll call you tomorrow," he said then hung up.

Rachel hung up her phone and put it back on the table.  She was about to change the channel on the TV when Kristin came in with an armful of groceries.

"Hey, there!" she said cheerfully.  "We're back!" she said as she walked into the kitchen.

Jackie walked in with the rest of the groceries.  She smiled at Rachel.  "I see you're awake from your nap," she said as she set the groceries down in the kitchen and walked into the living room.  "Are you hungry?"

          "No," Rachel said.

"Well, then, it's toast for you again," Jackie said with a laugh.

Kristin walked into the living room and sat down in the recliner.  "How do you feel?" she asked while taking her shoes off.

"A little tired, but not too bad," Rachel said as she sat up a little bit.  "I guess the boys are coming here for Thanksgiving.  They have two shows here in Lexington."

"Yeah, I know.  Nick called her last night and told about it.  I'm excited!"

"Kris, you really don't have to stay here the full six weeks.  You can go back and see Nick.  I'll be fine.  Jackie's here to help me."

"I just didn't want you to think I was blowing you off for Nick," Kristin said as she stretched out in the recliner.

"You wouldn't be.  I mean, Nick misses you and you miss him.  There's not much for you to do around here.  I wouldn't be mad if you went back to him.  You'll be back here in five weeks either way.  Doesn't matter to me."

Kristin raised her eyebrow at Rachel.  "Are you trying to get rid of me?" she joked.

Rachel laughed.  "No, I'm just saying that why stay here and be bored when you can be with Nick.  It sure as hell beats sitting around here with my crippled ass," she said with a grin.

"Well, all I have to do is call him and he'll get me a flight out to where they're at.  He'd already told me that."

"So, call him and get your ass on a plane," Rachel said.  "I'll be fine, really."

Kristin stood up and gently hugged Rachel.  "You're a good friend," she said.

"And so are you.  I couldn't have done this without you.  So, now it's my turn to give back.  Go be with your man."

Kristin grinned and disappeared upstairs.  Rachel smiled and went back to their movies.  For the first time in weeks, she felt as if her life was going right.

Chapter 13

It was nine in the morning when the alarm went on in Sarah and Kevin's room.  Sarah groaned and slammed her hand on the snooze button.  She snuggled under the covers and wrapped her arms around Kevin.  Kevin jerked awake and looked around.

"Did the alarm go off yet?" Kevin asked in a groggy voice.

"No," Sarah grinned as she traced her finger down his chest.

"Oh, okay," Kevin said as he laid his head back on the pillow and closed his eyes.

Sarah smiled and ran her fingers through his tousled hair.  She chuckled at how his hair always looked the same messy or neat.  She studied his facial features carefully.  His long, dark lashes lay softly on his cheek.  Sarah brushed her hand on his cheekbone and glazed his lips with her thumb.  She planted a soft kiss on the tip of his nose.  Kevin smiled and opened his eyes.

"You're not going to let me go back to sleep, are you?"

           Sarah grinned.  "Nope."

"Aww, Baby, it's my day off.  I wanna sleep in.  It's not nine yet I wanna sleep," Kevin whined.

"But I don't wanna sleep, I wanna cuddle," Sarah said with a laugh.

"Well, you cuddle and I'll sleep," Kevin said as she wrapped his arms around her and shut his eyes.

"Party pooper," Sarah said in a pouty voice.

Kevin grinned and kissed her on the cheek.  "Wake me up at nine," he said.

"Why do you want to get up so early, Kevy?  Don't you want to sleep in much longer?" Sarah asked innocently.

"I would love to, but I promised D. I'd be up and ready by 9:30 so we can go snow boarding."

Sarah wrinkled her nose.  "Snow boarding?  Kev, why do you have to go snow boarding?  Can't we just spend time together?"

Kevin kissed her forehead.  "We'll spend time together tonight I promise.  Make sure I'm up by nine," he said then shut his eyes.

Sarah sighed and rolled her eyes.  "Fine," she muttered then cuddled closer to him.

Fifteen minutes later, Kevin opened his eyes in frustration.

"Damn, I can't get back to sleep," he mumbled to himself.

He looked down at Sarah who was sound asleep.  Kevin sat up a little and squinted to see the clock through the morning glare.  The clock read 9:15 AM.  Kevin grinned and let out a soft chuckle.

"Sarah, you little stinker," he whispered to himself then carefully slid out of bed.

After taking a shower and changing his clothes, he wrote a note to Sarah and left to go snow boarding.  An hour later, Sarah woke up to find Kevin already gone.  She noticed the note sitting on the night stand next to the bed with her name on it.  She picked it up and read it.

Sarah,

I went out snow boarding with Howie.  I'll be back around five.  I love you and I can't wait to be with you tonight.

Love Always,
Boo

Sarah snickered at the letter and set it down.  She got up out of bed and took a shower.  When she finished getting ready, she heard a knock on the door.  Sarah look through the peep hole to see Nikki standing there.  She opened the door and smiled.

          "Hey, Nikki.  What's up?"

"I was gonna go to the mall and I wanted to know if you wanted to join me.  I figured you wouldn't have anything to do since Kevin went with Howie for the afternoon."

"Sure, I'll go with you.  Let me get my purse and coat," she said as she quickly gathered them up.  "All right lets go."

Nikki and Sarah walked down the hallway to the limo.  "Have you been up long?" Nikki asked.

Sarah shook her head.  "I fell back asleep after I failed to persuade Kevin to stay at the hotel rather than go snow boarding."

Nikki laughed.  "You have to learn that when Kevin has his mind made up, he sticks to it.  No one can make him change his mind."

"I think I figured that out," Sarah said as she got into the limo.

The girls arrived at the mall and told the driver what time to be back.  They stepped inside the building and contemplated on where to go first.

"Anything in particular you want to shop for?" Nikki asked.

Sarah shook her head.  "I just came to get out of the hotel.  I'll go wherever you want to go," she stated.

"Cool, then lets go to Abercrombie and Fitch.  They have cool clothes there," Nikki said as she headed in the store's direction.

Sarah followed closely behind as Nikki skimmed through the racks.  She spotted a navy blue sweater and picked it up.

"Hmmm this is cute," she said.

          Sarah smiled.  "That's a guy's sweater."

"I know.  Wouldn't it look just adorable on Howie?"  Sarah nodded in agreement.  "It's his size too.  Great, I'll buy it," she said as she went to the cashier.

"Next stop, the GAP," Nikki said as she walked out of the store.  Nikki walked in as if she owned the place and took her pick of the merchandise.  "Hey, this is cute!"  Nikki exclaimed as she held up a purple T-shirt for Sarah to see.  "That would look so good on you.  You should buy it."

Sarah reached over and took a look at the price tag.  It read fifteen dollars.  "Fifteen dollars for a T-shirt?" Sarah said in shock.

"Only fifteen dollars!?!  Wow, they're on sale!  I gotta find a pink one!" Nikki exclaimed as she look through the pile of T-shirts.

After a couple of hours of shopping, Nikki and Sarah walked down to the food court.

"Man I'm hungry," Nikki said as she scanned the menu.  "What are you getting?"

Sarah looked through her wallet to check her money.  "Uhhh...I think I'll just get a crispy chicken sandwich and a small lemonade."

"That's all you're gonna get?" Nikki questioned.

"Yeah, I'm not really all that hungry," Sarah lied.

"Okay, whatever you want," Nikki said as she went up the cashier to order.

When the two had ordered their food, they chose a place to sit.  Sarah quietly ate her food as Nikki went through her many bags of clothes.

"Wow, I bought a lot today," she said with a laugh.  "Howie's gonna wish he hadn't handed me his credit card."

Sarah snickered.  "This is all from Howie's credit card?"

Nikki nodded.  "We got a joint credit account before we left for the tour.  That way we can both use the same credit card."

          "Oh," Sarah said softly.

"You know what, I bought all this stuff and you haven't gotten anything but that sandwich."

          "I know," Sarah replied quietly.

"How come?  I mean this place is full of sales.  I figured you'd find at least one thing you liked."  Sarah remained quiet and nibbled on her sandwich.  "Sarah, what's wrong?"

          "Nothing," Sarah replied.

"I know something's wrong.  I may not know you all that well, but you aren't as bubbly as you usually are.  You can tell me if something's wrong."

"It's not a big deal, really," Sarah insisted.

          "Are you sure?"

"Yeah...I think I'd like to go back to the hotel, if you don't mind."

"Oh, yeah, of course.  I'll call the hotel and have the limo come pick us up," Nikki said as she pulled out her cell phone.

A few minutes later, the limo pulled up to the front of the mall and the girls got in.  They sat in silence on the way back to the hotel.  When they arrived back at the hotel, Sarah didn't speak a word and hastily walked back to her room.  Nikki caught up with her before she shut the door.

"Sarah, wait!" she shouted.  Sarah paused a moment and looked over at Nikki.  "Please talk to me.  I'm concerned."

Sarah sighed and let Nikki into her room.  Sarah plopped down on the bed and blinked back her tears.  "It's not really that big of a deal.  I promise."

"Well, tell me anyway.  It's obviously a big deal to you if you're getting upset about it."

"No one knows this, but I'm broke.  My last three dollars was spent on McDonalds today."

"You mean, you don't have any more money left?"  Sarah shook her head.  "Aw, hon, I'm so sorry!  I didn't know.  Now I feel bad for asking you to come to the mall with me."

"No, it's okay.  You didn't know."

Nikki sat down next to Sarah.  "Have you told Kevin about this?"  Sarah shook her head.  "Why not?"

"I don't wanna bother him with my problems," Sarah mumbled.

"Sarah, he's your boyfriend.  You wouldn't be bothering him at all.  I've known Kevin for years.  He's a sweetheart, he'll help you in any way he can.  But if he doesn't know what's going on, then he can't help you."

"I guess you're right," Sarah said.

"If you don't tell him...I will," Nikki said firmly.  "I mean it.  I don't think you should be hiding something like this from Kev."

"Okay, I'll tell him," Sarah said.  "But you won't tell anyone else about this right?"

"Of course not.  I don't gossip about this stuff.  This is between you, me, and Kev, I promise."

Sarah smiled and hugged Nikki.  "Thank you," she said.  "I feel much better now."

"Good," Nikki said with a smiled.  "Well, I better get back to my room.  Howie should be back with Kev soon.  Talk to you later."

Nikki left the room leaving Sarah alone.  I'll tell him tonight, she thought to herself.  She glanced at the clock.  It was almost 5 PM.  He should be back soon.  Sarah picked up a book and patiently waited for Kevin.

Chapter 14

"Man, it feels great to have a day off," Howie said as he looked around at the snow boards.

"Yeah, I know.  This going to be fun.  I can't wait to get out on the slopes," Kevin replied.

"I like this one," Howie said as he picked up a purple snowboard.

Kevin snickered.  "I knew you'd pick that one."

"Hey, don't diss the board.  Purple's a really cool color."

"If you say so, but personally I like this one," Kevin said as he held up a blue one.

          "That one's cool too."

"Come on, lets get these checked out so we can hit the slopes."

Kevin and Howie checked out their snow boards and got on the ramp to go up the hill.  Both of them were in awe of the scenery.

          "I love Colorado," Kevin said.

"Me too.  I love the mountains."

The ski lift reached the top of the mountain and the boys got off.  Kevin took in a breath of fresh air and let it out with a sigh.

"Mmm, the smell of fresh snow.  I love it!  Come on, lets hit the easy slopes for a quick warm up."

"Okay," Howie said as he followed Kevin to the top of the bunny slope.

Kevin strapped on his board and edged his way to the top of the slope.  "Lets ride!" Kevin said in a cocky tone and slid down the hill, with Howie close behind.  "Man, that was too easy!" Kevin stated at the bottom of the hill.

"Yeah, but fun.  Wanna go back up and try it again?" Howie asked.

Kevin shook his head.  "Nah, this stuff is for the rookies.  We're pros, lets move on up to the advanced slopes."

"I dunno, Kev.  I mean it's been a while since we've done this.  I think we should warm up a little more."

Kevin let out a cocky scoff.  "Oh, please!  We can do this.  No problem!  Come on," Kevin said as he walked toward the ski lift.

          "Wait," Howie said from behind.

Kevin rolled his eyes in annoyance and turned around.  "What now?"

"The boot on my board doesn't feel right.  I don't know if I should go up there just yet," Howie said, checking out his boot.

"You wanna switch boots?  Would that make you happy?" Kevin said.

"Okay," Howie said as he undid his snowboard.  After they switched boots, Kevin proceeded his way back up to the ski lift.  "You're still going up there?"

          "Of course!  Are you coming?"

"No, I think I'm going to try the bunny slopes a few more times.  I'll catch up with you later," Howie said.

"Suit yourself," Kevin said as he walked up the hill.

          "Wait!" Howie shouted again.

"What do you want?" Kevin said with a groan.

"I'm coming with you.  There's no way I'm letting you do this alone," Howie said as he caught up with Kevin.

Kevin laughed and continued his way up the hill.  When they reached the top of the hill, they checked their snowboards and edged to top of the slope.

"Here goes nothing," Kevin said he slid down the hill.  Kevin whooshed around the trees at high speed.  Attempting to do a difficult double axle 360, he felt his board slip from the ground when he landed.  He tumbled down the slope and slid into a tree.

"Kevin!" Howie shouted as he unstrapped his board.  Kevin didn't answer, he just laid still as pain ran through his body.  "Kev, are you okay?"

"I think so," he said as he attempted to sit up.  A sharp pain shot through his right shoulder.  He let out a groan of pain.  "I think I broke my shoulder."

"Can you move it?" Howie asked.

"No," Kevin said with another groan.

Howie quickly took off his coat and wrapped it around Kevin.  "Stay here, I'm going to go get help."

"Hurry!" Kevin yelled.  Kevin laid still in the snow and waited for Howie.

Trying his best to subside the pain he closed his eyes and breathed in slowly.  Fifteen minutes later, the paramedics came and carried Kevin away on a stretcher to a nearby ambulance.

"God, Sarah's gonna kill me," he said out loud.

"I'm gonna call up to the hotel," Howie said as he reached for his cell phone.  He took one last glance at Kevin, who had passed out from the pain.  Oh geez this is all my fault, he thought then dialed the number to the number to the hotel.

Chapter 15

Nick flipped through the channels on the TV.  "The one time I decide to watch TV there's nothing on," he grumbled to himself.

The sound of the bathroom door opening caught his attention.  He shifted his eyes over to the door and out walked Kristin decked out in full Tommy gear.  Nick cocked his right eyebrow up at her.

          "Where are you going?"

Kristin laid on the bed next to him and kissed him on the cheek.  "I'm going shopping for a while.  I'll be back later."

"Oh, fine, leave me alone in this boring hotel room while you go out and have fun.  You just got off the plane last night and you're already leaving me," Nick said with a pout.

"I won't be that long.  Besides you're sick.  You need your rest.  Promise me you'll stay in bed and not leave this room while I'm gone."

Nick thought a moment.  "Okay, I promise."

"Good," Kristin said then kissed him.  "I'll be back in a few hours.  Feel better, baby."

"I'll try," Nick said as he laid his head on his pillow.  Kristin left the room, leaving Nick to go back to his TV.

After a couple more surfs through the channels, he finally found a football game that was on.  Feeling drowsy, he slowly fell asleep.  An hour later, Nick awoke.  Sleepily, he sat up and ran his fingers through his hair.  He felt his stomach growl.

"I'm hungry," he mumbled as he rubbed his hand on his stomach.

Nick got up out of bed and changed into khakis, a checkered green button down shirt by Tommy over a plain white shirt.  He gelled his hair back, leaving a few pieces hanging down over his forehead.  He slipped on his Doc Martins and headed out of the room.  Nick took the elevator down to the lobby floor and walked over to the hotel restaurant.  He took a seat at a table and read over the menu.  Finally, he decided on a steak dinner and a coke to drink.  After he finished his meal, he called the waiter over for his check.

"Your check was already paid," said the waiter as he handed him the receipt.

Puzzled, Nick glanced down at the receipt.  "By whom?"

"By the young lady sitting at the table over there," the waiter answered, pointing behind Nick.

Thinking it was a fan, Nick turned around to take a look.  There at the table sat a dark haired girl smiling straight at Nick.  She waved and smiled even bigger.  Nick knew he had seen this girl before.  Suddenly, it dawned on him.  He quickly stood up and walked over to her table.

          "Katie?"

"Long time no see Nicky," Katie said with a smile.

"What are you doing here?  I thought you moved to New York."

"I did.  I'm on vacation," she answered as she took a sip of her drink.

          "By yourself?"

Katie shook her head and smiled.  "I'm here with my boyfriend."

Nick raised his eyebrows.  "Boyfriend?"  Katie nodded.  "Boy, you don't waste any time, do you?"

Katie snickered.  "Nick, it's been two years."

"I know, I was just kidding.  So, who is this lucky guy and why isn't he here with you?"

Katie smiled.  "Justin Timberlake and he's doing an interview right now."

"Justin Timberlake?  How did that happen?  When we went out you hated NSYNC."

          "Well, things change."

"Obviously," Nick said with a grin.  "Mind if I sit down?"

          "No, go right ahead."

"Well, since you paid for my dinner, let me buy you a drink."

"Nick, you know I don't drink."

"Yes, but I know you drink coffee," he said as he motioned for the waiter.  "Two expressos, please."

Katie gave Nick a surprised look.  "Two?  Since when did you drink coffee?"

"Well, Kristin got me started on it.  It's not too bad."

          "Kristin?" Katie questioned.

          "Oh, my girlfriend."

"Well, well well, this is news to me.  Last I heard, you were still on the prowl."

Nick laughed.  "Don't believe everything you hear."

"So, how long have you been with her?"

"Not long, almost three months.  We met right before the tour started.  She's a premed student at UCF, but she's touring with me right now.  The university is letting her start her internship by being our on board nurse."

"Wow, you moved fast.  She must be special."

Nick smiled.  "Yeah....she is.  I love her a lot."

"Well, I'm happy for you.  You deserve someone special."

"Thanks, so how long have you and Justin been together?"

          "Almost six months."

          "Where did you meet him?"

"Well, my agent is friends with their manager and I wound up meeting him at one of those parties for Trans Con.  We got off on a rocky start, but after I was signed to tour with them on their next tour, we started getting along.  It's kind of a long story, but here we are six months later and we're as happy as can be."

          "That's good.  Congratulations."

"Thank you," Katie said with a smile.  "Well, Nick I better be going.  I'm supposed to meet Justin in an hour.  It was nice to see you again."

"You too.  Maybe we'll see each other again in the future."

"Maybe," Katie said as she stood up.

"Let me walk you out," Nick said as he left the money on the table.

The two of them walked out of the restaurant together.  Katie reached up and gave Nick a hug.  "Call me sometime.  The number's still the same," she said.

"Okay, I will," Nick said as he turned around to go back to his room.  On his way there, he saw Kristin coming in from the side door.  "Hey, baby," he said with a smile.

"Don't talk to me!" she said as she pushed passed him.

          "Wha----what's going on?"

Kristin stopped and turned around.  "You know good and well what's going on!" she shouted, on the verge of tears.  "I leave to go shopping for a few hours and you promised you would stay in the room.  Then I come back and see you coming out of the restaurant with...with another girl?!?!?!"'

Nick let out a soft chuckle.  "Kris she's just an old friend.  That was Katie, my ex girlfriend."

"Oh, that just makes me feel so much better!"

"I don't see what the problem is.  I didn't even know she was here.  I ran into her."

"Uh huh!  Yeah, sure!  Tell me another one, why don't you?  I have lost all trust in you, Nick!"

          "But....but."

"Shut up!  Just shut the fuck up!  You have nothing more to say.  Ugh, I don't even wanna look at you right now.  Get out of my sight," Kristin said as she stormed past him to the elevator.

Nick ran after her.  "Kris!  I swear it's not what it looked like!  Kris!" he shouted on his way to the elevator.

The doors shut, swallowing the sound of Kristin sobbing.

"Shit!" Nick cursed as he violently pressed the elevator buttons.

The doors finally opened and he quickly got inside.  Pressing the number to their floor, he paced the elevator.  At the tone of the bell, he dashed out of the elevator and ran down the hallway to their room.  Loudly, he banged on the door.  "Kris, let me talk to you.  I swear to God I'm telling the truth."

"Go away!" Kristin shouted on the other side.

Nick let out a huffy sigh and dug in his pockets for the hotel key.  Suddenly, he remembered he had left it sitting on the table in the room.

"Damn!" he said as he punched the wall.

"Nick don't beat up on the wall.  What did it ever do to you?" said the voice of Brian.  Nick turned his head over to Brian.  Tears were beginning to well.  "Whoa, Nick what's wrong?"

"Kris and I just got into a huge fight."

"Everything okay out here?" A.J. said as he came out into the hallway.

"Nick and Kristin had a spat," Brian stated.

"Spat is not the word for it, Rok.  She hates me," Nick said with a loud sigh.

"I'm sure she doesn't hate you," A.J. said.

"Yes, she does, she locked me out.  She won't let me talk to her."

"Nick, go with Brian to his room.  I'll go talk to her."

"Okay," Nick said as he followed Brian into his room.

"What exactly happened?" Brian asked as he sat on the bed.

"I got hungry and decided to go to the restaurant in the lobby.  While I was there I ran into my ex girlfriend, Katie.  We talked for a while then I walked her out.  I guess Kristin saw all of this and took it the wrong way.  I tried to explain but she exploded at me.  I don't know what to do."

"Well, just let A.J. talk to her and we'll see what happens.  There's no point in getting all worked up about it right now."

          "I guess you're right."

"Nick," said A.J. from the hallway.

Nick jumped off the bed and jetted out into the hallway. "Yes?"

          "She's ready to talk."

"That was fast.  What did you say to her?"

"Sorry, a magician never reveals her secrets," he said with a smile.

Nick laughed and went into the room.  There sat Kristin on the bed with a tear stained face.  Nick's face grew sad then sat down next to her.

"Kris, I screwed up big time.  I didn't realize this would make you so upset.  I don't love Katie anymore.  I love you.  No one else has ever made me feel the way you do.  You're the love of my life.  I just wish I could make you see that."

Kristin smiled through her tears.  "I think you just did."  Nick smiled back and kissed her.  "Baby, I'm sorry for overreacting.  It's just that, you're the first guy I've ever really loved.  And everyday I see girls swoon over you.  I'm so afraid someday you're gonna get tired of me and I'll lose you forever."

"No, I could never get tired of you.  You're the best thing that has ever happened to me."

          "Really?"

"Yes....really," Nick said then kissed her.
