Finally, it’s 2007; a new year. New Years Eve was awesome. I hung out with John and Taryne. I didn’t even drink! It was amazing. I’m really happy right now. Especially since Logan Morales asked me out. Of course I said yes. I mean, who wouldn’t have?! Everything is going good for me lately. Taryne and I have been fighting a bit, but not too bad; just stupid arguments that’s all. School is going well too. I’ve got a 3.7 GPA. Not bad at all. My dad has stayed out of my way lately. He’s walked out about seven times within the past two months. That’s really the only thing that has had an affect on me. Logan is the nicest guy I’ve ever met. I hope things never end between us.
April 2007You know how, you can take things for granted sometimes? You take living for granted most of the time, sometimes until you’ve lost a loved one. Well, I truly thought that this year was a turning point in my life; a time for change. Now, I see it was a big misunderstanding…
As I picked up my phone to call Logan, I could barely dial his number. I guess that’s what speed dial is for sometimes. The phone rang, and then went to his voicemail. I didn’t want to leave a message for him, especially because he probably wouldn’t be able to understand me. Thoughts kept on flashing before my eyes. It seemed like reality. The look on my mom’s face when she said the words “Kaden, your Uncle Greg had a heart attack... he didn’t make it.” Every memory I had with him was now rushing around my mind. It felt like just yesterday he was in this house laughing with me. I was close with Uncle Greg. He was really my only family member I got along great with; the only one who could understand me and where I was coming from.
My phone rang and I pretty much knew it was Logan calling me. He must have sensed something was wrong since I didn’t leave a message. “Hey baby,” he said. “Hi Logan,” I said. They were the only words I could really manage to get out of my mouth. “What’s up? How are you?” Logan asked. “N-N-Nothing, how are you?” I said. I think knew I was upset.
“Baby what’s wrong? You sound really down.”
“M-M-My uncle. He had a heart attack. He didn’t m-m-make it. He’s g-gone,” I started to bawl. Logan has never heard or seen me cry. This is the first time. “Kay, oh my god I’m so sorry! How old was he?” he asked. “He was fifty-four years old. Logan he was the only family member I had who I was close with. The only one who understood me. He was like a dad to me. And now…he’s gone. Without any kind of warning! I never even got to say good-bye! Oh Logan…” I started to cry even more. I couldn’t help it. I felt like a piece of me was missing. “Baby it’ll be okay I promise. You’ll be okay. If there’s anything I can do let me know. I’m here for you and I love you, you know that,” Logan told me. I didn’t know what to say to him at all. “Logan it’s not okay! I’m not alright! I’m a wreck can’t you see?! I’m sorry… I just completely flipped out on you,” I cried.
“Kaden, I’m coming over. You need me. I’ll be there soon. Bye hun,” Logan said.
I didn’t even ask Logan to come over. It’s okay though. I know he cares. I just don’t want him to see me like this.Logan pulled up in my driveway. He came inside and immediately gave me a hug and held me in his arms. We went upstairs into my bedroom and sat on my bed. Logan put his arms around me and kissed my forehead. “I love you, Kaden. I love you so much,” he whispered into my ear. I couldn’t speak, I just held him tighter. I felt safe in his arms; I loved him, even though I was unable to tell him that. “You’re going to be fine baby. Your uncle will always be in your heart. He’ll always be with you, maybe not physically, but he’s there in your mind. Don’t ever forget that, Kaden. And don’t ever forget that I love you,” he continued, “It just goes to show you, you can’t take life for granted. It could end at any moment.”
