A New Outlook
|
As we drive up we can see the line of men wrapping around the building. Leran, Katie, and I make our way up to FrontSteps, the shelter, and we are stopped by two men on the street, who introduce themselves as William and James. They greet us with smiles and hand shakes and seem eager to talk. They let us know that because we are there to volunteer that we can just go right in. Everyone eyes us cautiously and we meet Susan who lets everyone know that we are with HDS and the nature of our visit. She takes us upstairs and shows us around the kitchen, preparing us to serve iced tea to everyone and talk.
Awkwardly, Katie and I sit down together to talk with a man named Freddie. He tells us about his insanely large family, and his twin brother. We tell him that we are from Cleburne, and he quickly says that he is too. Katie and I get more comfortable and the three of us talk for a few more minutes about Cleburne, and Freddie’s family. After Freddie, Katie and I venture on our own. She settles in with Mr. Stevenson an opinionated WWII veteran and I make my way around the room, serving tea and making small talk.
I go through a whirlwind of people before I finally sit down and meet Rick. We talk about Dan Brown novels and religion. He tells me all about the case management system and the “lottery,” that determines the lucky few who gets the extra bed or a mat on the floor. As he tells me what it is like, I am overwhelmed with emotion. We always talk in our meetings about these people, yet I never actually understood how…real it was until I was brought face to face with it. All of the people we met and talked to, had great things to say; some funny, some serious and all amazing. It was an experience that I won’t forget. I left tonight with a few new friends, new memories and a new outlook on life. I can’t wait to see everyone again.
