“You are such a…” Hayley didn’t even know how to finish the sentence.
“Such a what? A great, guy? I bet that’s what you were thinking when I broke the lock off the door.”
Hayley glared at him. She was sitting in the passenger seat of Brennan’s truck. She had fought hard with Brennan, but he was way stronger. Much to her surprise and great relief, he hadn’t tried to rape her. He had just held her down until she got too tired to fight anymore.
“Why are you so intent on trying to keep me here?” Hayley asked while glaring at Brennan as he sat calmly behind the steering wheel.
“Because it’s not safe out there.” Brennan replied simply as he looked out over the dashboard to the outside world. It had just begun to snow. “Looks like it’s turning into a blizzard. We might be here for quite awhile.”
“Can’t we just wait until the gas station opens up?”
“It’s already nine thirty and we haven’t seen a single vehicle show up. I have a feeling whoever owns this place is in his nice warm house with his wife and kids drinking hot cocoa.”
“So what do we do then? Your battery is dead now and it’s freezing in here.”
“Look who’s talking. You’re the one with two coats on. I’m in a T-shirt.”
Disregarding his last statement Hayley continued her rant. “And I’m starving. The baby keeps kicking, my back hurts, and I have to pee. If you had just left me here, I could have walked to my mom’s…” Her voice trailed off as she realized she had started to believe her own lie.
Brennan looked at her an idea beginning to form. “Hey we could walk to your mom’s house. This is a dinky town it can’t be too far from here. Because face it, if we stay here we’re doomed eventually.”
Hayley protested. “No that wouldn’t work.”
“Why not? If it’s about walking in the cold—”
She cut him off. “No it’s not about that.”
“Then what?”
Hayley hesitated. How would she explain herself now? Sighing, she confessed, “Because my mom doesn’t really live here. I was just trying to get a ride from you without you asking too many questions.”
“Why’d you do that, Theresa? Don’t you trust me?”
“And my name’s not Theresa. It’s Hayley.”
“Well, well, well. Do you have any other secrets I should know about? You just robbed a bank and the police are coming for you perhaps?”
Hayley leaned over until she was about a foot from his face and yelled at him.
“Shut up. You have to admit you don’t look like the most trustworthy of people.”
“What does that mean?”
“Well, you’re sitting here wearing all black, with long black hair, listening to angry music. You could have been some kind of psycho path for all I knew. You still might be, considering your little stunt with that knife this morning. Or a rapist…” Hayley was feeling defensive, and didn’t appreciate Brennan acting all indignant when he hadn’t exactly been congenial towards her.
“A rapist huh? Believe me, if I wanted to, I could have done that a long time ago. Maybe I should now?” Brennan looked at her angrily.
They glared each other down, their faces mere inches apart, neither one willing to back off. Brennan leaned in and met his lips with hers. The gesture took her by surprise, but she found herself enjoying it in spite of herself. She melted into the kiss, desire just beginning to rise within her. Brennan leaned forward, deepening the kiss. He reached his hand up and gently touched her face.
Hayley broke off the kiss abruptly, still breathing heavily from the surge of energy running through her veins. “What the hell was that?” She spoke the words without any force behind them.
“A kiss.” Brennan replied simply, as he continued to look in her eyes, his breathing, heavy as well. She could tell he wanted to kiss her again, she could feel the restrained craving in his lingering touch.
Hayley looked at him, confused. She had been so mad at him just moments before, and now she felt, well she wasn’t sure what she felt. He was quite handsome, she realized, even with the black clothes, and an incredible kisser. But he was three years her junior and she had just met him. What was wrong with her? She moved back to her side of the cab, Brennan’s hand gently falling from her face. She silently tried to make some sense of what had just occurred.
They sat in the truck in silence, the blizzard swirling around them in full force. Strangely, the silence between them wasn’t awkward. Hayley felt almost like through the moment they had shared that they had reached some sort of unspoken understanding of one another.
Finally, Hayley spoke, almost as if it were to herself. “So what do we do now?”
Brennan glanced over at her.
She started to organize her thoughts. “I mean, you were right when you said we can’t stay here forever. What should our next move be?”
“I don’t know. But the snow doesn’t seem to be letting up. How do you feel about breaking and entering?”
“Huh?” Questioned Hayley suspiciously.
“The gas station. We could break in. I’m sure it wouldn’t be that hard.”
“Break in? But that’s against the law.” Protested Hayley.
“We don’t really have any other options, unless you want to go knocking on random doors. Personally, I like my first idea better.”
Hayley didn’t like the idea of breaking the law, but she also didn’t like the idea of wandering around searching for a friendly-looking house out in the cold. “Ok. Let’s go break into the gas station.”
“Great.” Brennan smiled at her enthusiastically. He opened the car door and hopped out. Hayley scooted across the seats and jumped down to the ground. The wind blasted into her, and flecks of snow dug into her face. Brennan shut the door, and they sprinted back over to the building together.
Brennan took his knife out, opened it, and jammed the tip into the lock on the glass door. He twisted it a bit back and forth, then hard once to the right and the left. He pulled it back out, and Hayley noticed the tip was bent just a little bit. He grabbed the handle to the door and pulled it open, ushering Hayley inside from the cold.
“Wow. I’m impressed.” She said sarcastically. “Where did you learn to do that, prison?”
“No.” Brennan retorted scowling.
Hayley shivered, brushing the snow from her hair and coat. She glanced over at Brennan. He was shaking uncontrollably. His skin looked even paler than usual, and Hayley started to get worried. “Are you ok, Brennan?”
“Oh, yeah. Just a little cold, is all.” He said as he held his arms crossed tightly against his chest.
Hayley touched his arm. It felt like ice. She took off his coat and handed it to him. “Here take your coat back. You need to warm up.”
“No thanks. I’m fine.” Brennan shoved away her outstretched arm and walked over behind the counter.
“What are you doing?” Hayley demanded following him.
“Looking.”
“For what?”
“Nothing.”
“Tell me.”
Brennan ignored her and continued to look around behind the counter. Not finding what he was searching for, he cursed under his breath.
“Here, just take the coat.” Hayley insisted, trying to place it over his shoulders.
“No thanks.” Brennan said, getting annoyed with her. He shoved her back.
“You’re freezing. Just wear it for awhile.”
“No.”
Brennan glared at her, and she returned the stare, neither one willing to back down. Hayley dropped the coat on the counter.
“Then I won’t either. In fact, if you’re going to sit around here stupidly in a t-shirt, then I will too.” And with that, she took off her jean jacket as well, tossing it to the floor.
Brennan smirked. “Are you going to be taking off your other clothes any time soon?”
Still feeling angry with him, she replied. “Maybe. If that gets you to put your stupid coat back on.”
“Ok.” Brennan looked at her expectantly.
“What?”
“Well? How badly do you want me to wear my coat?”
Hayley rolled her eyes at him. “Fine.” And with that she grabbed the hem of her shirt and pulled it up over her head. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”
Brennan looked at her approvingly, as he pulled on his coat. “I can. Nice.”
“Right. I’m only doing this because I don’t want to get stranded here alone. If you die, who will I have to fight with?”
“I see.” He was staring at her breasts.
“You men are all the same.” Hayley hopped up onto the counter, letting her legs dangle off the edge. The room felt quite warm so she was comfortable in just her bra, except for the fact that Brennan continued to stare at her.
“Stop that.” Hayley snapped.
“Why should I?” Brennan answered. The color was beginning to come back into his face and he wasn’t shaking nearly as badly as before.
“Because it’s not appropriate.”
“You’re the one that took her shirt off. I can’t help but appreciate your…assets.”
“My assets. Right. Well, as thrilling as this conversation is, I really have to pee. I’m gonna go find a bathroom.” Hayley said as she slid off the counter.
Men can be such pigs. She thought as she headed down the lighted hallway. The first door on her left had a small beat up red and white sign that read ‘women’. She pushed the door open and stepped inside, flicking the light on as she did so. The bathroom was small and dirty. A single toilet stood next to the sink, both laced with reddish brown rust stains. If she didn’t feel like she was about to wet her pants, there was no way she would have degraded herself enough to use this place’s facilities.
Hayley relieved herself then washed her hands at the sink. She looked at herself in the grubby mirror. She looked like crap. Sighing, she tried to fix herself up the best she could. She ran her hands through her hair to try to smooth out some of the knots, and splashed her face with the chilly water. Using a Kleenex from her pocket, she wiped her smudged eye makeup off.
She was startled by a knock on the door.
“Yes?” She asked.
“Things going well in there?” Asked Brennan through the door.
“Yes.”
“Ok. You almost done?”
“Why?”
“Because the men’s bathroom doesn’t work.”
“Oh, ok.”
Hayley opened the door and stepped into the hallway. Brennan stood there grinning.
“What are you smiling at?”
“Did you know, you’re really hot when you don’t have a shirt on?” Brennan stepped forward, touching her arm. He leaned in, and she knew he was about to kiss her. For a second Hayley saw Jaron’s face. It was enough to make her turn away, and his lips instead came in contact with her right cheek.
“Sorry.” Hayley said clumsily, as she stepped back and turned to walk back down the hall. Her face burned red with unnamed embarrassment. She felt like such an idiot.

Phew... Well this made me sigh. And I wonder what he was looking for... hmmm... Also I don't quite agree with rsnlvr. Women are human too so even if there is some interest don't push it. It takes a long time to think about such things. And mistakes do happen. |

I think it's a good chapter even if Brennan is turning into a horny moron. I am, as always, intrigued to see what is coming next! |
