The Beginning... |

A House Divided
|
She stood at the door, afraid to cross the threshold. She gripped a blade in her right hand. The cool steel felt comforting against her skin as she tapped it against her leg. She paused in her rhythm and with a renewed sense of resolve she slowly stepped forward into the bedroom. The scene displayed before her shook her body and soul. There lying on the bed were her parents bloody corpses. Once two healthy human beings, now just mangled bits of blood, flesh and bone. Her father’s head was completely unrecognizable as it had been crushed. His body, a gruesome mass of cuts, bruises, and lacerations, rested in a twisted shape, indicating his death was met with much resistance. His clothes hung on him in pieces, loosely connected in a garish covering. She turned her head away before allowing her eyes to travel across the bed to where her mother lay.
She strode across the room and up to the floor mirror that hung on her mother’s closet. She looked at herself in the mirror, slowly taking the image in. There was her face staring back at her. A dark bruise, mottled with shades of blue and green had begun to form on her cheek, and a large bloody mark streaked across the right side of her forehead. Her shirt sleeve was torn almost completely off and the front was spattered with her blood. Her left side throbbed in pain, and she felt the blood continuing to make its way down onto her hip and soak into her flannel pants.
She felt light-headed and she began to sway back and forth. Her reflection began to fade into darkness before her. She opened her eyes wider and wider, but still she could not see. She sank to the ground, slowly succumbing to the blackness overcoming her senses.
In what seemed like only a moment, she revived to the feel of an arm on her shoulder, shaking her gently awake. She opened her eyes and was met with a startlingly bright light surrounding her. Pain from the intensity shot into her head, and reverberated through her skull. She groaned and after pausing to get a little used to the brightness, opened her eyes again, this time shielding them with her hand. Am I dead? She thought. She was surprised to see a man in a blue doctor’s uniform standing over her. She shifted and realized she was lying in a bed with a single crisp white sheet covering her body. She looked over and saw a monitor displaying her heart rate, respiration and such, and realized this must be some sort of hospital. Her eyes wandered back to the face of the man she now recognized as a doctor and saw concern written across his face.
“Miss Holt. How are you feeling?”
She tried to speak, but only managed a croak. She swallowed once and tried again. “Like a jackhammer is going off in my skull.” She attempted a smile, but that only brought pain shooting through her face. She’d forgotten about the bruise. She lightly touched her cheek, remembering with silently growing horror what had caused the injury. The doctor continued to speak. She barely listened as her mind began to replay the events of her recent sordid past.
“Miss Holt. I know this is going to be hard to understand, but now that you’ve woke up things are going to get very busy for awhile. You’re going to have a lot of people wanting to come see you and ask you all sorts of questions. Remember you don’t have to answer anything you don’t want to.”
She looked at him confused. Thoughts began to form quicker than she could speak. “What do you mean? Where am I exactly? What have I done?”
“You are in Roseville Community Hospital. There was…an accident in your home two nights ago. I’m not sure how much you remember but the most important thing for you to do right now is to get some rest and heal.”
He smiled again and patted her shoulder. “A nurse will be in later to check on you. I’ve just given you something to help you sleep. Believe me, Miss Holt. You’ll need it.”
And with that, he stood up, leaving her alone with her thoughts. She didn’t remember everything from two nights ago, but the image of her parents bathed in blood on their bed refused to leave her mind. The medicine began to kick in, and she drifted off into a restless sleep filled with dark images, and blood streaked hallways.

Intrigueing. Although my mind is also wondering what happened. I mean it would be a nice twist at the end if you added her having nightmares of a girl who looks alot like her smiling like a demon while doing that to her parents. I'd be creepy and wrap everything up. :) But I wanna know what you're going to do with it. |
