The Last Line (chapter 1 prt 2 )

The last row was called up. Every man was accounted for. That was a relief. Over the past three days, four trainees had gone missing. Some men can’t handle facing battle. That’s what you get when you draft the last of the able bodied male population in the dominion. People want freedom. Freedom to live, to breathe, to choose. All I can do is try to remind them that this, as an army, as a nation, is what we are fighting to hold on to. If every man runs off because they didn’t choose to be here, then there would be no fight, no resistance against the enemy. If we don’t fight we wont have freedom to do a damn thing, let alone choose. But then again some people might think they have a bit too much freedom. Donia, you stupid bullheaded thing. It had taken every ounce of me not to shake her to dust when I found that she was here. She had wanted to come with me. She had wanted to fight. She says she wants to be like me. Foolish. A girl of sixteen wanting to fight in a war? No. never. Not my daughter in the least. Of course, I wasn’t a fool. I taught her to defend herself. She would need to know how to if she were my daughter. A man in my position has to be cautious in every part of his life. I can’t even have a dog without it s throat being sliced.

The captain came into the room just as the men dispersed for the evening meal. He stood beside me in silence “I heard we have a guest.” He slapped me on the shoulder. I could hear the laughter in his voice.

“yes. Yes we do.” I couldn’t think of anything else to say. Before I knew it laughter was bellowing from me. Although he is my superior officer, this man was my oldest friend and Donia’s Godfather. He knows how she is. As stubborn as her father and beautiful as her mother once was. After my laughter quelled a bit, I looked up at the stars. Damn her. “Why couldn’t she stay home like I bade her to?” off in the distance battle tore at the Earth and opened the sky with a noise that seemed to answer my question.

Captain looked at me with pensive eyes. “you cannot ask her to stay home and expect her to. It doesn’t matter if you leave her in her in a castle or in a shack. Ever since Lila passed you are all she really has to hold on to. Nannies and guards don’t make up for your absence. Right now you are all she lives for, all she knows. You are her home Nisien. You can’t expect her to not come chasing it can you?” He looked at me one last time then turned toward the dinning tent.

Of course, he is right. When is he not?

Then again, how can I protect her if she wont do a darn thing I ask? She is all I have. Victory may be slipping from my grasp. That I can live with. But I am nothing without my daughter. I can lose this war.

But I will not lose Donia.
