The Last Line (chapter 1)
|
“what do we have here? A wagon rat? I’m sorry to say little miss but you picked the wrong caravan to jump. You should of gone the other way. This is where the battle is, you see.” the soldier stopped and took a better look at me. “hey. You look familiar.” I glared at him.
“You think?” I shook his hand from me. Stepping away from him, I straightened my clothes. Not that it did much good. They were wrinkled and dirty from my little excursion. I took another look at him. His eyes had widened with the realization that he really did know me. But not from where. I have to get away. “ Look, I will be on my way if you point me in the right direction.” I could see the doubt in his eyes “ I promise. I will be gone right quick. No trouble at all.” just as I finished, he gave a little gasp. He finally recognized who I was. He grabbed me by the wrist. As I tried to fight him he crossed my arms behind my back.
“He will not be happy with you. I swear he will blow a gasket. What the hell were you thinking coming out here? Stupid child.” he was taking me towards the camps where all of the officers were. I fought him, but it was useless. As we got nearer, my brow started to dampen. why did I leave the wagon? the soldier was right. I am stupid. He slowed when we reached the bigger tent with the violet emblem on the front. The emblem symbolized the upper army ranks. He paused before going in. I had seen this emblem hundreds of times before. It made me homesick. I took a long look at the sword and arrow crossed together, making a big X. A thorny vine tied it together at the middle. One would have to admit, it is intimidating enough for its position. I flinched as he pushed the tent opening. He is going to kill me.
“Excuse me, sir. But I think I’ve found something of yours.” there must have been a meeting in session, because there were about ten to twelve officers at a long improvised table. All talk had ceased when we arrived. I reddened as multiple pairs of eyes looked at me with curiosity and amusement. Some were even laughing. I locked my gaze on the ground. I’m dead ,I’m dead . the man I had dreaded to see had his back to me. He slowly turned around. When I heard nothing from him, I looked up to see him glaring at me. Fear drove deep as he was still silent.
“what do you think you are doing here?” I could hear the fear and anger mingle in his voice. I could feel shame snaking its way into my breasts.
“Hello father.”
Yes. He is going to kill me.
