Pretending Not to Care [6]
|
Dark water crashed against the coast. The water was now swirling around Blake's ankles. Not too much longer and the cave would be filled. As far as Blake could tell, his Dad had either given up and gone home or had passed out again on the way there. Time to go....
Blake took several steps out of the cave before realizing his mistake. He had looked forward, left and right...not up. Some sand fell on him from above. It was too late to go back into the cave, his dad would find him there, and we would get trapped and drown or get murdered. Blake ran for it.
Weaving zig-zag marks in the sand as he ran, Blake knew that this was his best bet. As long as he kept moving and not in a straight line, the chances of his getting shot were slim. He looked back, and saw that his dad really was following him, it wasn't imagination. Three shots fired into the night. One missed Blake by inches. "Good thing my dad is drunk. Even though he couldn't shoot very well before, but still.."
After what seemed like endless hour, Blake managed to find his way to Hayley's backyard. He was far ahead of his dad, and had never made mention of Hayley to him, so he felt safe. Blake shoved his stuff into the doggy-door and knocked. It seemed hopeless, nobody was answering. The door opened. Blake fell in and told Hayley what happened. "Thank God that aat least now you have a place to hide." She told him. It was the truth.
