Chapter 49
Sophie made her way down the hall and to the gym where the volleyball tryouts were being held. It was supposed to have been outside, in the school yard where they have an outdoor court set up but due to the rain, it had been moved. Sophie sighed as she remembered the day with Logan in the rain, where they had first kissed. She pushed that thought away as she opened the gym door and saw Holly stretching.
Putting on a bitter smile, she walked over to Holly and crossed her arms. “How are the tryouts being held?” Sophie asked in a fake, sugary voice. Holly glanced at her and continued stretching, ignoring her for a minute. She stood up and said in a monotone voice, “We’re having a regular game. Do your best. And pray we see you when you’re at your best.” Holly smirked and said sarcastically, “Good luck. I think you’ll need it.” “I think not,” Sophie countered back, as she stretched quickly and took her place on the court. Holly walked over to the center of the gym so her voice could be heard all around and yelled, “Okay everyone, this is how tryouts work, we will play a volleyball game. Whoever wins does not affect the outcome of who gets selected to be on the team, we will be solely deciding who gets to represent this school based on your skills. We only want the best. Any questions?” After hearing no response and making sure the sides were divided equally, she called out, “Alright, here we go. Ready…set…go!” Holly sat down along with the current team members watching the court critically.
Sophie was up to serve first. She held the ball out with her left hand and stepped forward as her right wrist hurtled the ball forward into the air causing it to land on the other side of the court where no body was guarding the spot. Grinning, she knew that was a perfect serve and it automatically earned them a point. Out of the corner of her eye, Sophie saw Holly shaking her head at the girl who was supposed to have been paying attention and saw her focus her eyes on Sophie. Sophie ignored her glaring eyes and continued playing the game hard till Holly blew the whistle signaling the end of it. Sophie glanced at the scoreboard that one of the members was keeping and saw that her side had won. Sophie wiped her sweat off of her forehead as she listened to Holly. “The members of the team and I would all like to thank you for coming out and trying out. The members who got selected will be posted on a list outside the main office by second period. Good luck.” She called out. Taking this as the hint to leave, Sophie grabbed her things and stormed by Holly who eyed her. Oh shit, she thought with a sinking feeling in her stomach, Darien’s dropping me off. Walking slowly to the school parking lot despite the rain, she nervously licked her lips as his car came into view. She opened his car door and settled herself in and put on her seat belt. “Ready?” He said quietly. She nodded and looked down towards her lap. As he pulled into drive and exited the parking, she felt her mouth get dry. The air was heavy with silence and Sophie couldn’t stand it.
“Um, listen... Darien…,” She began saying softly.
