Chapter 48

“Oh,” Sophie stuttered while her cheeks flamed red, “Well I can assure you it was nothing. He’s just my neighborhood, and well, he offered me a ride.” Holly kept glaring at her. “We’re just friends.” Sophie added hastily. “Yeah, whatever,” Holly replied hostilely, “Tryouts are after school.” Sophie smiled and said enthusiastically, “Great, thank you.” “Sure. Just pray you have what it takes. We don’t take just anyone.” Holly said, coolly. Sophie forced a smile and nodded, squeezing past her to enter the building. Even as she kept walking, she felt her eyes burning into her back. As she turned around the corner, she sighed with relief as Holly was no where to be found.

                        The day proceeded as boring and tiring for Sophie, until last period, that is. Sophie walked into the room and took her seat quietly, again being in back of Eric. He turned around and smiled flirtatiously. “Hey Sophie,” He said smirking. “Hello Eric.” Sophie muttered, sliding down lower into her seat. She kept her gaze to the paper and kept doodling little hearts. He moved his hand to his and slid her hand across the paper to see what she was drawing. “Aww, are those hearts for me?” He cooed. “Uh no,” Sophie said, looking at him weirdly. Eric kept holding her hand and gently rubbed his thumb against her skin.

                        “Uh hello,” a voice called into the room awkwardly. Sophie’s head shot up and found Darien looking enviously at Eric who was holding her hand. He shifted his gaze to Sophie and immediately looked away towards the teacher. “Mr. D, Ms. Rose told me she wants you to sign this paper.” He said in a different tone. He walked over slowly and waited patiently. “Darien,” someone else called out. Sophie froze and mentally cursed. She hated that voice already; it was Holly. Darien looked up towards her and Sophie shifted her head slightly so she could see the scene play out. She saw Holly blow a kiss to Darien. Sophie’s heart stopped as she saw Darien smiling. This is what I get, Sophie thought gloomily forgetting about her hand. Suddenly, a burst of anger erupted within Sophie’s body. Two can play at that game, she thought bitterly. She sat up and rubbed Eric’s arm caringly, smiling at him. Eric looked surprised, but pleased. “Knew you couldn’t resist me,” Eric said smirking. Sophie grimaced and then smiled sweetly. Darien turned around to leave and shook his head, slightly shrugging. The last bell immediately rang and Sophie’s thoughts shifted. Volleyball tryouts, she thought. I’ll show her what I got, she thought angrily.

Darien’s POV

                        He exited the classroom and immediately leaned against the wall, inhaling and exhaling deeply. “How could she do that?!” He muttered angrily. “She did like him all along,” He exclaimed, “God I’m so stupid.” His shoulders sagged as he said softly to himself, “Just another girl gone.” The bell rang and Sophie exited the classroom. They both locked eyes and Darien tore his gaze away. He hoisted up his book bag and started walking the other way. “But a perfect girl.” He said bitterly, pushing through the school doors to get to his extra class session.
