Accidental Love [Chapter 47]

Chapter 47
“Uh,” Darien stuttered, “Well because I don’t like guys who make pretty girls like you cry.” He smiled and felt his heart steady again. As Sophie smiled and bought the lie, he thought, God that was a close one. “Well, I doubt you’ll ever meet him and he hates me,” Sophie thought gloomily. “Aww cheer up,” Darien said with a stifled yawn, “He doesn’t hate you, he loves you. He’s just upset right now.” Sophie noticed his yawn and asked, alarmed and ashamed, “Am I keeping you up? I’m so sorry.” “No, no,” Darien said, smiling, “I’m usually tired. Will you mind if I go to bed?” “No, not at all,” Sophie said understandingly, “I’ll talk to you later; it was great meeting you today!” “You too,” Darien replied, “Goodnight, sleep well, and sweet dreams.”
“Same to you,” Sophie called back. Darien stepped back and pulled down the shades. Thoughts were mixed in his mind and he couldn’t tell right from wrong. He settled into his bed, and drew the covers around him exhaling deeply. She’s one heck of a girl, he thought, so many problems yet such a happy face. Staring at his wall, he slowly fell asleep listening to the faint music by Duran Duran.
The Next Morning
Sophie rolled over the next morning and mumbled something incoherent in her sleep. Suddenly, a sharp shrill went off in the room and she quickly sat up with her heart beating rapidly. “Stupid alarm,” She grumbled. She squinted her eyes and made out Darien’s silhouette behind his curtains and smiled. She quickly got up and dressed. She started walking down the stairs to the kitchen and grabbed an apple. Halfway through it, her doorbell rang. Confused by who would be there this early, she went towards and unlocked it. She swung it open and was greeted by the sight of a freshly awake and smiling Darien. “Hey,” Sophie said grinning, “What are you doing here?” Sophie’s mom came up behind her and gently hit her on her arm. “Sophie, did I teach you any manners at all, invite the young man in,” Her mom scolded jokingly.
“Oops,” Sophie replied sheepishly and opened the door wider, “Come into the kitchen.” Darien winked at Sophie and walked into the kitchen following her mother. He extended a hand to her mom and greeted her politely, “Hello, my name is Darien, I met your daughter on the way back from school yesterday and I also happen to be living next door.” “Hello, Darien, it’s a pleasure to meet you, I’m so glad you came over, Sophie needs some new friends considering this was a hard move and all,” Her mother answered back, smiling brightly as she shook his hand. Darien spotted her dad and gave him a hand shake as well. “Sir and ma’am, I was wondering if I could drop Sophie off to school today. I’m a safe driver, I guarantee that.”
Seeing he was a good man, Sophie’s father nodded and exchanged a wink with her mother. “You guys have a great day at school,” Sophie’s mom said cheerfully to the both of them. Darien smiled and said gratefully, “Thank you and you have a great day.” He turned around and began exiting the house. Sophie glared at her mom and dad for exchanging that wink and turned around, secretly blushing. She grabbed her backpack, and threw out the eaten apple, and ran to his car. She slid in and smiled and said politely, “Thank you for doing this, you didn’t have to.” “Don’t worry about it, which guy would complain about having a pretty girl in their car?” He asked, jokingly. Sophie laughed and said, “Well I appreciate it.” Darien smiled and kept up their conversation and before they knew it, they were at school. Darien parked expertly and turned off the engine. Sophie swung open the door and got out. She bent down and said, “Thank you once again, I really appreciate it.” “No problem, and seeing that you have no way to get home, I’ll drop you off, just meet me here after volleyball tryouts; I stay late today because of extra classes.” “Alright,” Sophie said happily, “Bye, have a great day.” “You too,” Darien called after her retreating back. He swiftly climbed out and went his own separate way, chuckling under his breath.
Sophie climbed the school steps and was stopped by Holly. “Oh hey,” Sophie said grinning, ready to patch up yesterday’s iciness, “I’ll be at tryouts—’’ “Who was that?” Holly demanded. “Who was...who?” Sophie asked confused. “The guy in the car, who was it?” Holly asked impatiently. “Uh, Darien.” Sophie replied, lost. Holly’s eyes suddenly glazed over. “Why?” Sophie asked curiously. “He was my ex boyfriend.” She replied, glaring at her.
