Chapter 46
It was about 10:00 that night when Darien heard one of his favorite bands. Duran Duran? He thought, confused. He turned around to his CD player and saw that it was turned off. No one listens to the 80’s around here, he thought, now intrigued. He followed the sound and was surprised to discover the music was coming from Sophie’s room. Her back was turned towards him, and she was gently swaying and dancing to the music. Propping himself up on his elbows, he admired her graceful figure. “Ordinary World,” He murmured to himself, smiling at her wonderful taste in music. He started humming the beat and started singing the lyrics without even noticing, “But I won't cry for yesterday; there's an ordinary world; somehow I have to find; and as I try to make my way; to the ordinary world; I will learn to survive.” He must’ve been singing too loudly because Sophie whirled around, her hair settling messily over one shoulder. “How long have you been standing there?” Sophie said breathlessly, with a hint of anger in her voice. “Long enough to know you’re a good dancer,” Darien said, chuckling. Sophie blushed and mumbled, “That was nothing.”
“Psh,” Darien scoffed, “It was too something. And Duran Duran just happens to be my favorite band.” Sophie’s head flew up at the mention of the band’s name and said, “Really? I love them, they’re amazing, and Ordinary World is one of the best songs around.” “Mmm,” Darien agreed, his voice turning serious and concerned, “Are you alright now, Sophie?” She looked down and nodded, forcing a smile on her face. “Yeah, I’m alright.” “It’s been a rough day, you need to get some rest,” Darien said gently. She ran her fingers through her hair, breathing out. “Been a rough past couple of months, actually,” She muttered.
“What happened?” Darien asked, his voice sounding genuine. Sophie shook her head, close to tears again and whispered, “No, you’ll think I’m horrible.” “Never,” Darien said strongly, “I promise.” “Well, before that ex that called, his name is Logan, at the time he was my best friend,” Sophie said quietly, “I had another boyfriend, and his name was Austin. I don’t know what happened but my feelings changed and I started liking Logan. A lot. I wanted to tell Austin, I swear but when I was walking home with Logan, he- we kissed and Austin saw and the next thing I know Austin’s dead and he left me a note.” Darien stayed quiet and averted his gaze to the floor. “See, I knew you’d think I’m horrible,” Sophie said, sighing. Darien shook his head and carefully picked his words.
“What you’ve been through is a lot and I know it’s hard, because it probably feels like you’ve already just lost someone, and now you’re going to lose someone else again? It’s like what the fuck; does everyone get snatched away in the end?” He said. Sophie nodded, intrigued. “Hey, are you some sort of mind reader?” She asked in a serious tone. There was complete silence at first, until Darien burst out laughing. “What?” He managed to choke out in the middle of wiping his tears away from laughter. Sophie cracked a grin and protested, “Well you’re able to tell my feelings so accurately so I was just wondering.” Darien shrugged, and still chuckling said, “I dunno, I’ve always been able to relate so that’s probably why, but I’ll take what you said as a compliment.”
Sophie smiled and looked down, remembering what they were previously talking about. Darien grew serious and said reassuringly, “People only go away in the end if you want them too. I know your ex boyfriend no longer exists but that’s only in reality. But he still exists in here,” Darien tapped his heart. He swallowed and continued on. “Logan, its hard for him too, he watched his best friend fall in love with some other guy when he was in love with you. No wonder he’s so over-protective of you now; he’s afraid you’ll be snatched away from him too.” Darien shook his head and looked at the floor in silence. “You’re right,” Sophie suddenly said, the air shifting as silence left again, “It’s hard for both of us. I shouldn’t have mentioned two guys to him, the first day I got here.”
Darien’s head shot up at that statement. “Who’d you tell him about?” He asked, trying to sound casual. “Eric and you.” She answered, worriedly, “Why, should I not have told him about you?” “No, no that’s fine,” Darien said, “But why’d you tell him about Eric?” Sophie looked away, embarrassed, “He was calling me hot and he was harassing me.” “Oh,” Darien answered, his face darkening with anger, “I’ll punch him.” “Noooo, don’t!” Sophie said alarmed, “No need for that, I avoided him pretty well.”
“Alright,” He said, still frowning. “What’d you say about me?” He asked suddenly remembering as his heart lit up. Sophie looked down shyly and said, smiling, “Oh nothing, just that you were the nicest person I’ve met in Seattle.” Darien smiled and replied, “Thank you, that’s pretty nice of you to say considering you met me today.” Sophie frowned and said angrily, “That’s what he said.” “Oh?” Darien said coolly, “Doesn’t sound like he likes me much.” Sophie looked down ashamed and replied sullenly, “He doesn’t.” Darien smirked and blurted out, “Good, he shouldn’t.” Sophie looked up confused, “Why not?” Crap, Darien thought, there goes my big mouth, what will I say now?
