Chapter 44
The last bell rang loudly causing Sophie wake up tiredly from her sleeping place at the desk. She smiled, praising herself for making it through the day as she walked to the exit. Sunlight filtered into her eyes causing her aqua eyes to sparkle. She started walking slowly, leaving the school territory behind. She kept her gaze on the ground, getting lost in her thoughts. About 4 blocks away from her house, she heard a male voice behind her.
“Hey, are you new at Westridge High?” He asked with an easy smile tugging at his lips. “Mhm,” Sophie muttered, and sped up her walking pace. “Hey slow down, I’m your neighbor, Darien, I saw you guys move in yesterday.” He said, frowning. Sophie widened her eyes and slowed her pace to match his. “Sorry, I’m Sophie,” She said with a sheepish smile, “It’s been a rough day.” “Kids at school bothering you?” He asked, shaking his head. Sophie nodded and met his warm honey colored eyes. The sun made a shiny glaze over his dirty brown hair.
Sophie looked down immediately, hoisting her backpack higher onto her shoulder. “Yeah, especially this girl named Holly,” Sophie said under her breath. “Ooh,” Darien said wincing, “She can be a total ice queen to people she doesn’t like.” He stopped and added thoughtfully, “Which are most.” Sophie cracked a grin and said frustrated, “Yes, but she’s the captain of the volleyball team, and I want to be on it. I don’t think she’ll let me.” Darien smiled sympathetically and said, “Well, I’ll tell you this much, she can be a total bitch but she’s fair. If you have volleyball skills, she’ll take you into consideration, that’s why she’s the captain after all.”
“We’ll see,” Sophie said half-smiling, stopping in front of her house, “You’re the only nice person I’ve met in this school so far.” Darien laughed and said, “Give it a few more weeks.” After he had walked to his door, Sophie had realized what he had said and yelled to him, “A few more weeks?!” Darien winked as he turned the lock to his door and called out, “See you around, Sophie.” Sophie smiled and walked into her house just as his door shut.
“Hey Mom, I’m home!” She yelled. “In here sweetie,” Her mom called back. Sophie walked into the kitchen where her mother was sorting dishes. “How was school?” She asked, half distracted. Grabbing an apple, she said miserably, “Horrible.” Her mother put down her dishes and made a sad face. “It’ll get better, first days are always rough,” She said. “Yeah I guess,” Sophie muttered, beginning to walk towards the stairs. “I’ll talk to you later Mom, have fun with those dishes,” She said sarcastically. Her mother shook her head smiling and replied, “Bye honey.” Munching on her apple, she walked up the stairs thinking about how out of all the people in the world, the worst had to be piled up in Seattle. Except Darien, she thought.
She heard a familiar tune start playing, and searched her pockets for her cell. Her heart sped up as she saw Logan’s name flash on the cover. Then suddenly, her heart slowed and her smile slowly faded as she thought, what would he think of Darien?
