Chapter 22
At Austin’s House
“Austin!” His mom yelled cheerfully into the house, “Where are you?”
Hearing nothing she frowned. Austin always answered her calls. She spotted his book bag slumped down near the wall.
How’d it get over there? She wondered.
Climbing the steps, she called out once more, “Austin, are you here?”
She hesitated before his closed door before slowly pushing it open. As she opened it a crack, she saw a light.
She opened the door further and let out a piercing scream.
Her hand flew up to her mouth as she cried out, horrified, “AUSTIN, OH MY GOD!” She saw cuts on his wrists. Waving her hands frantically in the air, she debated whether to touch him or to call the cops. She bent down to check for a pulse but found none.
She began to walk backwards and tripped over herself as she rushed down the stairs.
Regaining her balance, she yanked the phone off the base and dialed 911, furiously pounding the keys.
“HELLO!? HELLO? YES, MY SON... MY SON IS DEAD UPSTAIRS, PLEASE COME QUICKLY!” She ran her hand through her hair, “NO I CAN’T RELAX!” She yelled into the phone.
She slammed the phone down and about 5 minutes later, sirens came blaring through the usually quiet streets.
Police officers barged through the door and yelled, “Where is he?!”
Speechless and traumatized, his mother pointed upwards. Two cops went in.
She collapsed to the floor as she saw people frenzy over her.
20 minutes later, an officer came towards her with a grim expression.
“WHO COULD’VE KILLED HIM?!” She screamed.
“Ma’am” The officer said keeping his tone even, “There is a huge chance that he killed himself.”
“No…” She whispered, “No… he’s alive, my baby’s alive, you’re lying to me.” She began to make her way towards his room but two women officers held her back.
“We have found what looks like a suicide note however… it’s addressed to Sophie.”
Sophie, Sophie, Sophie, his mother thought blankly, I’ve heard him mention her before.
“OH YES!” She cried out, “She’s a girl who goes to his school,”
“Well, she’ll be the only one able to open it. I’ll go towards the school and pull her out for questioning meanwhile the body…”
His mother stood rigid.
“It’s being taken for further examining in the lab; it will be your decision to decide whether it should be buried or cremated. Once this letter is opened,” He said, shaking the envelope,
“It will reveal all.”
Logan and Sophie
Logan waited impatiently in his car in front of Sophie’s house. It was just like the old days… when life didn’t get so complicated. Sophie came trudging out of the door, wearing the saddest expression on her face.
As she slid into the car Logan asked gently, “What’s wrong?”
She pressed her lips into a line and shook her head. She stared directly ahead, not willing to meet Logan’s eyes. Logan stared at her and lightly squeezed her hand.
She looked at him and said, depressingly, “I broke up with Austin last night.”
Logan let go of her hand, and frowned, “You’re not happy with that? You can go back to him if you want, Sophie…”
“No!” She shook her head, frustrated, “He saw us, Logan! He saw us on our block. He saw everything.”
She stared up at him with her aqua eyes. She continued, “He signed off AIM, and I tried calling him but he wouldn’t pick up. I don’t know anymore.”
Logan didn’t know what to say, so he stayed quiet.
She said, hurt, “Do you know, just how much I hurt him? I feel so horrible.”
“Sophie, he was bound to get hurt, one of us was,” He comforted. Seeing that his words weren’t doing much, he shut his eyes and quickly said,
“I’ll apologize to him, even, if that makes it better.”
“Really?” Sophie asked, amazed and in disbelief.
He gave her a tiny smile. “Yeah.”
“It still won’t be enough,” She said, staring out of the window. She changed the topic, quickly.
“Did you break up with Stacie?” She asked brightly, gazing at him.
Logan gave no response.
“You didn’t right?” She said bitterly, “Ha. What? You wanted to see if I would break up with my boyfriend first, that way, if I didn’t you would still have your prize?”
“Sophie, no, I didn’t have the time to!”
“Shut up!” She snapped, “And drive.”
Logan didn’t utter a word more as he swiftly drove through the streets.
They arrived at school and Sophie flung open the door and stomped out.
Logan sighed as he got out slowly and locked the car. Walking with his head down, he bumped into Sophie.
She had stopped abruptly and she turned around to glare at him.
“Sorry,” She said, sheepishly. She turned back around without a sound.
“I love you?” He cooed in her ear, seeing if she would accept it. Sophie shivered as it sent waves of goose bumps on her arms.
“Is that a question or a statement?” She said sarcastically.
Logan turned her around and stared deep into her eyes and replied,
“Statement. A definite statement.” Sophie tore her eyes away from his seductive ones.
He tilted her chin up and promised, “I’ll break up with her today or tomorrow,”
Finally accepting defeat, she smiled as he leaned down and kissed her.
Pulling away, Sophie cried out, “OH!”
Logan looked confused. “The cops,” Sophie said turning around.
Logan gazed up and saw dozens of police cars all around the school property. She saw an officer ask a young man something and he pointed towards her.
Me?! She thought, terrified, what did I do?
“Are you a girl named Sophie, who knew Austin McKain?” The officer inquired as he drew near.
Sophie nodded her head as she felt Logan tighten his grip on her waist.
“You’ll have to come with us then,” The officer said, as he led her away.
Logan stared after them dumbfounded. He jogged up to a pair of girls and asked them curiously, “What’s with the cops?”
“Don’t you know?” One of them asked, staring at him with worry.
With her lips trembling, she replied, “Austin killed himself.”
