The next morning Devin awoke to Eric coming into gloat. Turning on the tv a woman reporter said, “Just hours ago the court moved their reasons unknown as usual but what this reporter is asking is why now? For months they were happy where they were, now when their most prized slayer has disappeared they decided to move? I don't get it...Just yesterday they announced that the rumors are true Avril Navada has Deylay Dream. They are asking anyone who sees her to report their finding to the court immediately and to use extreme caution around her because they aren't sure how far along her Deylay is.” Flashing up a photo off Avril, which seemed to be several months old, they then cut to a preview of things later to come. A man began to speak, “For months now the rumor has been going around that her future had changed but they wait until she went missing to tell us about that? What is wrong with these people? Have they gone insan-” Eric turned the tv off. “This isn't good.”
Pulling out his phone Eric dialed someone's number and waited for them to pick up. “Hey Jamie.” Jamie said something Devin couldn't hear on the other line. “Yeah I just saw and so that means you know why I'm calling.” Jamie spoke back. “Great! I'll call when we're ready.” Eric replied closing the phone.
While watching the news Devin had tightened his grip on Avril. Quietly she mumbled his name making his day and shocking Eric completely. Smiling Devin couldn't help but feel on top of the world. She was dreaming about him that made up for everything that she would ever do to him; past, present, and future. Eric looked steamed then he smiled coolly, “Maybe you shouldn't how her anymore because your starting to corrupt her.” “If putting my arm around her starts her corrupting then its too late becau-” he stopped he'd already said too much. Eric's face had dropped.
Eric sighed and run his hand through his hair then sat down. “I'm sorry.” Devin said his face dropping too. “Its not your fault. She's seventeen, I've been eighteen for 122 years. It was doomed from the start the court didn't like it from the start I was her guardian and though I'm considered eighteen they didn't like the age thing. Plus they thought that I would get her off track. Then Justin came into the picture.” Eric shook his head and sighed. “That guy screwed so many things up, if he wasn't already dead I'd kill him.” Devin smiled, “I know what you mean. I mean my parents took him in the man who changed him screwed up and they fix it. They thought I could use a friend my age. Well I've been told I changed a lot after he can along. We use to scheme together and everything. Then we found out that he was wanted for some serious stuff and that Avril was his slayer. Well he told me one night how he was gonna get her to like him so that she would refuse to kill him and live.” “Yeah and it worked but something he did during her Comatan really hurt her and she came at him with a vengeance I still don't know what it was.” Devin nodded in agreement. “I sure wish I knew what it was.”
A few hours later Avril was still sleeping and Devin and Eric continued to talk. “You know you stink like a human.” Eric commented. “I do not.” Devin napped back before taking a whiff. Coughing Devin nodded, “Your right I do.” “I bet it's from being so close to her like you have. I mean every time your shower or bathe the first person you come in contact with is her. Your heart beat being as faint as it is, is what gave you way, but it also seem you've rubbed off on her too cuz she has the same heart beat as you. I figure her Deylay likes the quiet feel it gives her. As Devin nodded Avril moved in his arms.
Smiling Eric said, “Have fun.” then he walked out leaving Devin to face her alone. Avril sighed and tried to roll over. Devin tightened his grip around her a refused to let go they were gonna deal with this now not later. Realizing what was going on Avril's eyes snapped open.
“Let go of me.” Lending down he whispered sternly in her ear, “NO!” “I'll scream.” “I'll tell them your Deylay's acting up again.” Avril sighed, “What do you want?” “You to listen.” Devin replied pushing her on her back. “Ok I'm listening.” she said looking away. “Look about yesterday that was the past I promise I'm sorry if it seemed like I was considering doing still because I'm not.” Devin said watching her expressions. “Forgive me for not letting you know in the beginning?” he asked watching her.
Suddenly she flipped him over and crossed her arms on his chest. “A little insurance would be nice.” She said while lazily tracing his lips. “How do I give you that?” he asked barely keeping his breathing steady. Feeling his heart beat she smiled, leaning down she turned her head to where she barely missed his lips and whispered in his ear. “You already did. I'm sorr-” Devin broke her off when he pull her head towards his and kissed her.
Falling into the kiss she smiled everything felt so right. Her right hand was messing with his hair and her left was drawing shapes on his chest. Smiling she messed up his hair until it seemed that nothing could be done with it. “What?” he asked when he saw he smile and laughing eyes. “I don't think your gonna have a good hair day. Groaning he smiled and flipped her over, slowly he ran his hands up her sides tracing every rib. Quickly he found the right place and her laughter rang out. Squirming she tried to get out of his arm and cover her sides but it was no use. Still squirming in his arms, they soon found themselves hitting the floor.
Soon both were laughing about hitting the floor. Moments later Jamie walked in just in time to see them kiss. “No wonder you stink like her.” Jamie said before walking out. Devin grinned a guilty grin at Avril. Avril leaned forward and sniffed. “Their right you know. You smell like a human.” “Why does everyone have to keep reminding me of that?” Devin said in irritation. “Because its true.” Avril said before kissing him. “Mmm hmm.” he moaned against her lips.
Pulling back he looked at her. “Eric says your gonna be mad at me.” he stated softly. “Why? Wait you and Eric talked?” “Yeah we did but anyways we missed the court.” Avril sighed. 'You know you don't have to talk I'm getting echo's and that's annoying.' 'Everything annoys you.' Devin grinned. Socking him lightly on the shoulder she smiled, 'Not everything.' Devin smiled back, 'Your right.' Grinning lightly he pulled her into a kiss.
When they got up and started getting ready, it soon became a chore. Every five minutes it seem Devin would think of another way to annoy her and amuse himself. Finally tired of his antics she grabbed his bottle of gel and dumped it all over his head.
Frowning sightly he scraped the excess off his head and shook his head mumbling, something about luck. Placing his head under the facet he tried his hardest to get the gel out of his hair. Once he managed this task he sighed he didn't have anymore gel. Watching him as he pouted about his gel Avril grinned and wrapped her arms around his waist. “I think it looks good with out anything in it.” she stated quietly. Grinning and shaking his head he smiled. “If you say so.”
When they finally left the room Jamie took one look at his hair and stated, “I thought it was like a unwritten code that all vampires had to have gel in their hair.” Devin shook his head and tossed the empty container to him. “Out.” Jamie smiled and lead them to Eric's table.
Sitting down Eric eyed Devin then Avril, “I see your still in one piece.” he told Devin. Avril smiled, “For now.” At her comment all eyes turned her way. Eric eyed Devin cautiously and then went back to his menu. Looking over his menu Jamie told Devin, “We'll stop and get you something to eat before we leave.” “Here's fine.” Devin stated picking up the menu. He hadn't eaten last night and he needed to eat soon. Blood would be nice but it wont take care of his hunger pains.
Jamie put down his menu and eyed him, “What exactly are you suggesting?” He said clinching his jaw tightly. Devin looked at him and laughed, “I'm not a blood, I'm a heart. That means yes I can live off blood but I don't really care for it and I can eat food.” Jamie's face shrunk even further, “They can really do that?” Devin looked at him and then slowly nodded, beside his Avril grabbed his hand.
When her hand came in contact with his, it caused his heart beat to quicken making it easier to hear. Jamie stared at him in confusion. “I didn't think it was possible.” he simply stated knowing that if Devin's heart beat was like that in public he could easily pass as a normal person and that was something to be worried about.
“How many more heart's are their?” Jamie asked while eating trying to make it seem like causal talk. “Including me...” Devin began counting on his fingers. “Not counting the half's their's about eleven of us. “I'm the oldest, and the only one who doesn't have a full sibling.” “Meaning?” Jamie asked. “Meaning the other ten are the result of two very unhappy vampires ending up with 6 and 4 to raise. They were born just months from me on the same day.” “And your brother and sister?” Ashley asked. “They're half's my mother died giving birth and so my father changed a woman months later to save her.”
Avril nodded slowly that woman had really seemed to care for Devin even though he wasn't hers. She loved him and cared for him and she had no reason to. For some reason this concept didn't make sense to Avril. Maybe her parents didn't care for her or she was adopted when the court took her in. Avril shook her head she didn't know...she didn't remember and until she met her parents or the people who had cared for her she wouldn't know. Avril took a deep breath why did she care anyway she probably would live that long.
Avril would've liked to continue thinking on this but Devin's hand on hers brought her out of her thoughts. 'You ok? You look at little pale.' Avril swallowed and looked down at her food. 'Just thinking about my parents. I wish I could remember stuff like you. Most of your memories have returned I can tell because your minds full again.' 'I want to remember everything! I want to know why I was so happy to take that assignment. Why one moment I want to stop you from getting hurt and another I wanted to kill you and I want to know before they kill me.' 'I know-' Avril thought before Devin moved his hand. They were bringing up painful thought will in the middle of a restaurant and that wasn't something Devin want to try and deal with...not now at least.
Well Avril ate she couldn't help but think of Devin. 'The court surely would pardon him. He had changed so much they couldn't kill him now, could they? I mean he loves me...he loves me and I-i think I love him too.' Avril cut into her food and continued chewing. This thought didn't sit well with her. If she did love him then it was gonna hurt even more when he failed just like they all did. That was something she didn't want for sure, to get hurt again. Justin had cause enough damage.
'Justin.' Just thinking his name hurt her. His words rang in her ears every time someone brought him up. 'Love!' he spat. 'Everyone knows that their no such thing as love. Let her die knowing that love has never existed.' he just grinned as she collapsed and cried. He'd thought that in her emotionally weakened state she would fail to kill him and slip up thus allowing him to kill her and make his escape.
Never was there such a death as his and never will there be one again. That day she used everything she had on him. That day she'd become cold and hard. She'd vowed to herself to never love again never feel again. It was then that she'd allowed the Deylay to awaken in her.
Taking a shallow breath she could feel another attack coming on. Looking over at Devin she could see he was discussing something important with Jamie and that all were lost in their thoughts. Trying to regain her composer and breathing she looked around the room. Aways way from their table a man was staring at her it took only moments to figure out why. The man was a vampire and it was clear that he was looking at trying to sample her neck. Swallowing nervously she turned around in her seat.
From behind her the man and his friends got out of their seats. Walking slowly over to her table they grinned. “Hi.” the man said from beside Avril. Hearing him all heads turned; with him was a least six other vampires. Devin eyed him cautiously. “Hello, Brandon.” “My, my Devin its been a long time hasn't it?” Brandon smiled. “The last time I saw you, was when I gave you your assignment.” Devin frowned this wasn't gonna be good.
