Who's That Girl? 2

Creative Created on 4-1-08 Views(41) Story Rating G

I don’t think I was imagining the footsteps. They got louder, and heavier with each passing moment. Everything was spinning. It was all going black. I stumbled onto my knees. I looked at James. Or at least tried, he was getting blurry.

“Bye-bye Cherry doll.” He said.

“James Fredrick Watts! You are under arrest for the murders of Jeannine Patricks, Felicia Noels, and Kristy Kirk! You have the right to remain silent…” A man was shouting. I couldn’t hear the rest. It seemed so easy to just slip away into the blackness that was overcoming me. I heard another voice instead.

“She’s breathing! Call an ambulance! It’s alright darling, help is on the way. Just stay with us for a little longer!”

“I will get you Cherry! I WILL BE BACK!!!” James was screaming at me. I couldn’t see anymore. I could just hear.

“Cherry? Is that your name?”

I tried to nod. It was so hard. For some reason, I felt weak, it hurt to move. I tried to speak instead. All that came out was a small groan. Hardly above a whisper.

“I think that was a yes. Cherry, I need you to stay with us!”

The blackness was coming faster and faster. I opened my eyes one last time, and saw my rescuer.

“I think she’s awake. Hello dear, I’m Mrs. Dreeder, your neighbor.” A high pitched voice said.

I opened my eyes and saw I was in a hospital. I looked to my right and there was a plump woman in the bed next to mine. She looked maybe forty. I looked around the room. It was plain white. Just about everything. If it wasn’t white, it was black, clear, or brown. The only sort of color in the room, came from looking outside the window. The room smelled like bleach and other cleaning products. My arms ached from all the needles and my skin was irritated with the cloth that was the so-called hospital gown.

“Youngin‘? You hard of hearin’?” She asked.

“No. Sorry, I was just, confused.” I said.

“That’s alright. You’ve been out of it for a while. Two months.”

“WHAT!?” I nearly screamed.

“Just messin’ with ya!” She laughed. Her laughs were wheezy and loud.

“How long have I really been out?”

“About a day and a half, hon. So what’s your name?”

I figured she was the conversational type.

“Lola. My name is Lola.”

“Well nice to meet you Lola. Bobby! Bobby! Say hello to this young lady. Her names Lola.”

I didn’t even notice the man in the corner. He was about twenty. Maybe her son, he had a similar resemblance. Thick hair, ice blue eyes, long lashes. He had a muscular build as well. Something Mrs. Dreeder didn’t have.

“Hello Lola.” His voice was cold.

“Hi.” I said, my voice was chilled.

“Well Mother, it was good to see you. I shall be back same time tomorrow. Good day to you both.” He spoke with eloquence.

“Bye Bobby.” Mrs. Dreeder said. “That’s my son. He lived with his dad until he was fifteen. He’s twenty-one now. He works in London. But he took off the whole week to make sure I was okay. Ain’t that sweet?”

“Very.”

“Where’s your parents?”

“Oh, um, they are actually on a business trip in Russia.” I lied. Truthfully, I had no idea where my parents were. I knew my dad would probably still be drunk, and my mom, well, she might already be dead.

“Oh my, did the hospital call them?”

“No, there wasn’t a need to.”

“Why not?”

“It was just a small accident. No big worry.”

“What happened?”

“I was in a hit-and-run. As you can see, I got hit.” I lied again.

“Now, hon, I’m gonna tell you the truth. You are a great liar. I would have believed you if I didn’t actually know that your boyfriend was trying to kill you and that your name is Cherry. I think it’s kinda weird your Momma pronounced as fruit than the drink.”

I was speechless. It was obvious this woman was probably a gossiper.

“Oh wow. So, exactly how much do you know?”

“Everything youngin’. I read your file.”

“What!?”

“Well, it was on the table and I got bored waiting so long for Bobby. I just though I’d take a peek.”

“So you read my file?”

“Yes.”

I huffed and sighed. I was kind of mad.

“I’m sorry.” She said. “I didn’t think it was a big deal…”

I laid back down in my bed and let sleep overcome me. For sleeping for so long, I was even more tired than before.
