Carrie & Me (9)

Tragedy Created on 3-11-08 Views(25) Story Rating G

I was on my own now. Me. Heidi. I decided to get more jobs. I wanted to be a workaholic right now. I applied at anywhere that sparked my interest. I ended up counting the applications I filled out. Thirty-six. I wondered how many would hire me at all. I had fourteen hours of free time during the day. I only slept for maybe four hours a night now. Coffee was my new best friend. It always helped me. I was wondering when I found a construction site that had been closed down for a year now. It had plumbing and that was good enough for me. I decided that tomorrow I would buy a few things.

I went and bought a pager and a battery-operated alarm clock. I left my pager number at everywhere I had applied and they accepted it. I felt like a different person though. Like a big change had gone through me. I went to the beauty store and bought permanent hair dye. I was dying my hair a reddish brown. My plain brown hair was getting old. I went to a public restroom and did my hair there in an hour. I went into the hair salon and asked them how much it would cost to blow dry by hair. The nice lady at the counter did it for free for me. We ended up talking and doing my hair too.

After a while, I asked “How much do you have to know to work here?”

“Well Hun, how ‘bout you work here and don’t worry about college. I’ll teach ya. You can work at the desk for now. Wanna start?”

“Now?”

“Yeah! Why not?”

I started my first day at Tanya’s Hair Studio.

****(One week later)****

“Tan!”

“Yeah?”

“This girl says she got an appointment with you for right now.”

“Miss Underbrayer?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Send her in!”

I sent in Miss Underbrayer to Tanya. It was only me, Tanya, and Cindy today. Tomorrow, it would be me, Tanya, Stephanie, Dina, and Sharnae. But today, we were really busy and Kristy had already taken off early and Dina was on her break.

“I’m sorry ya’ll. It will only be a few more minutes.”

“All I wanted was a trim.” I heard one lady mutter under her breath. I figured I could do it.

“How many inches?” I asked.

“One.”

“I’ll do ya.”

I was pretty nervous as I sat her down. I peeped inside my drawer in my little section of the studio, Tanya already gave me one since she said I learned quick, and looked at my ruler. I marked an inch on my finger and grabbed my scissors.
In fifteen minutes, the lady had paid and left.

“Anyone else for a trim? I’m afraid that’s all I really know.”

Three people raised their hand. Within fifty minutes, they were all paid for and gone. But there were still a lot of people. I realized that Tanya was still with Miss Underbrayer so I went to Tanya’s little section and checked.

Tanya and Miss Underbrayer were talking.

I walked in and asked, “Tanya, there are a lot of people out- Oh, you’re done. Good! I had to trim some people’s hair.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Bye Ginny.”

“Bye Tanya.”

Ginny Underbrayer paid one-hundred dollars.

While Tanya was taking new clients, I was reminding clients about their appointments, making new ones, and calling people for surveys and advertisement.

“Heidi,” Dina said as she walked in, “why aren’t you giving these people haircuts?”

“Because you know I can’t do that yet. I can only trim. Besides, I’m working at the desk.”

“Wanda, I’m ready for you. Watch this Heidi.” Dina said.

I walked with Dina to her section with the client named Wanda.

“The usual razor?” Dina asked.

“Yes please.” Wanda replied.

“Okay Heidi, I’m teaching you how to razor cut someone’s hair. It’s a popular look down here so you need to learn it. You wash their hair first. So I’ll be right back.” Dina took Wanda to the hair washing station and washed her hair.

“Now,” She started “ ask Wanda how many inches she wants off.”

“How may in-”

“Three in the front and two in the back.”

“Okay. Now, you take the razor, and do three inches in the front, and two inches in the back.” Dina now demonstrated this to me. It looked pretty easy.

“Now, do two.”

“Two what.”

“Do a three inch and a two inch.”

I did it and it looked pretty good.

“Good job Heidi. Maybe you can give Carrie a cut next time you see her.”

All sounds in the studio stopped. My eyes were burning. Then I remembered, I hadn’t paid the check for Carrie in two weeks and I haven’t even seen her either. I looked at the clock. Tanya said I could come and go as I pleased since I now lived with her. I shouted to her I was going to the hospital.

I ran to the hospital and walked to Carrie’s room.

It was empty.
