I never saw him coming. I was sitting by the pond, thinking. We had broken up two days ago and he wouldn’t stop calling. He wanted me to forgive him. He wanted me back. I told him I don’t date cheaters.

     The sun was going down, casting elongated shadows on the rippling water. I shivered before realizing that I was still in my running clothes. Fabulous. I was going to move when I finally sensed him behind me. All of my instincts kicked into overdrive as the adrenaline coursed through my veins. I tried to figure out how long he had been there. I swallowed, the sweat pouring out of all of my pores.

     “Hey Susie.” He said, the lust clear in his voice.

     “Hi Paul.” I whispered, finally turning. He was dressed in regular clothing, shorts and a polo. His hair was spiked and his stance was casual. But he was blocking the only exit from the meadow where the pond was, he knew it too. And his face. His face was contorted with an almost animalistic rage. My hands felt clammy. I wiped them on my shorts absentmindedly.

     “Nice night.” He remarked, stepping forward.

     “The nicest.” I rasped, scooting backwards so that I was as close to the pond as possible. He took another step forward.

     “I was hoping we could talk.”

     “Well, actually Paul, we can’t. You see I’m late for dinner and Max will worry.”

     “Is Max your new boyfriend?”He asked, taking another three steps forward, clenching his fist.

     “No.” I spat. “Max is short for Maxine. She’s my sister which you would know if you had ever listened to me.”

“DON’T LIE!!!” He screamed, moving so that his face was right in mine. I moved so far back that my hands hit water and sank to the mossy pond floor.

     “I know that you’ve been entertaining men, Susie-Q. And I thought to myself, ‘Why? Why would my Susie hurt me like that?’ And then I realized that you must not love me anymore. That hurts, Susie. It really hurts.” He was so close that I could feel the heat from his body. I was so numb with fear that I couldn’t move.

     “I still love you, Susie-Q.” He whispered. “Don’t you love me?”

     I slowly shook my head no. Then his expression changed. His anger became so apparent that I could practically feel it radiating off of him. I wanted to back away from him but any farther and I would be in the pond. Suddenly his arms came up. I had half a second to process the fact that he was going to push me before I felt my body arc backwards and land with a splash in the middle of the pond, the deepest part.

     The fear had paralyzed me for too long. The panic, the power my body needed now was too far away to access. I tried to swim up one last time before letting the darkness pull me under.

     I never saw him coming.
