        I awoke to find myself lying in bed. I could feel a lump on my forehead. There was a guard peering anxiously at me.

        “It’s okay! She’s awake!” He called in German to someone outside of my room. Then he switched to Spanish.

        “How’s your head feeling? Lord Camery bashed you against that wall pretty good. You really should have been nicer to him. Or at least been respectful.”

        His Spanish was perfect. His grammar was beautiful and it was hard to pick up on his German accent. I felt warm inside from hearing that perfect flowing language. It had gotten tiresome listening to idiots botch it day after day.

        “I’m respectful to people who are respectful to me. As far as I can see none of you deserve that. You will get nothing from me. You should release me while you still can. I assure you that no harm will come to you if you just leave me be. But my father will hunt you. And he will find you. Give up while you still breathe.”

        The rapid Spanish was back. When I really needed something from these monsters I tried to slow it down a bit. I was testing this one though. Trying to figure out if he was as good at listening as he was at speaking.

        “Sorry, Princess, but you’re not going anywhere. Lord Camery hopes to get a lot of money from your father, and if he doesn’t who knows what could happen to you. All I know for sure right now is that you had better swallow that pretty pride and be nice. Otherwise something worse than that bump might appear on your body.”

        He turned to leave. I was grasping for a way to keep him here. He was the closest thing to my homeland I had at the moment.

        “What’s your name?”

        He didn’t turn around.

        “Daniel. Now good night Princess Annabell.”
