Dance, Dance!

I am twelve. It is the Holiday dance and the end of the first semester.

By now everyone has figured out that I am Kate Mitanski. To people that went the a different elementary school I am still just the Hot New Girl. To people that I went to elementary school with I am the New And Improved Kate Mitanski. Even Beth-Anne is trying to be my friend. I have not deserted Mandy though.

I am sitting on the bleachers with Mandy. We have not danced once. Mom thought it would be nice for Lydia to do my hair and make-up. I look like a prostitute.

We are both sulking. I am sulking because 95% of the seventh grade boys have already asked me to dance. Mandy is sulking because no one has asked her to dance. We are not happy campers.

“You’re Kate Mitanski right?” Asks a pimply ninth grader.

I glare at him with so much ice he should be frozen. He backs away. I hear him mutter to his friends.

“Stupid sevie…thinks she’s too good for us…not even that hot…”

I want to go home. I call Mom. She says she’s sending Dad to get me because she is working the night shift. I tell Mandy. I leave her to her sulking to wait for Dad outside. We don’t talk on the way home.

I run to my bathroom and wipe all of the gunk off. Dad appears behind me. He tells me I look beautiful. I tell him to piss off. Then I lock myself in my room.

I have the nightmare again.
