CHAPTER 16

He called five times before he decided to give up. I didn’t want to talk to him. I was so hurt by the things he said it made me sick to even think about hearing his voice again. The phone rang again. I picked it up off the table next to me ready to heave it across the room hoping it would break into a million tiny pieces, but I noticed the caller id said Camille, my boss. I cleared my throat trying to make it sound as though I hadn’t been crying. “Hello.” I said.

“Kate are you okay?” Camille asked. “I saw the magazines today.”

Camille and Samantha, Camille’s secretary, were the only people I told about my mother’s ring. “I’m ok.” I lied.

“Oh Kate I am so sorry.” Camille said sympathetically. Samantha then got on the phone. “Omigod Kate are you ok? I heard everything.”

“I think I’ll be alright.” I answered trying to convince myself more than them. I was glad to know that I had at least two allies. The three of us had gotten rather close since I had started working there. They were both great friends of mine and I knew their concern was genuine.

“Kate,” Camille said, “why don’t you just take the week off. Take a vacation. Get away for a little while.”

“Are you sure you don’t need me?” I asked.

“I can manage. I’m more worried about you. Please Kate, I really think you should. I promise I wont replace you. You’re the best nurse I have.”

The tiniest laugh escaped my mouth. “Ok Camille I’ll do it, but I’m coming back next week.”

“Ok” she said, “try and have some fun, get your mind of things. Call me and let me know if anything more happens.”

“ok I will.” I replied

We clicked off after saying our goodbyes.

I grabbed the remote off the couch and flicked on the T.V. Bad Idea. It was even on the news. I shut the TV off and went to my room deciding I would give sleep a try. I shut my phone off and set it on my nightstand. I changed into pajamas and fell into my bed. As I laid there I started thinking about what today was. It was exactly four months ago on this date that Justin and I had met. The night before he had acted funny when I mentioned today, so I knew that he was going to do something special. Fresh tears welled in my eyes and this time I allowed myself to cry. So much for a special night.

I don’t know how long I lay there sobbing before I finally fell asleep, but I woke up and looked at my clock to find out that it was ten o’ clock at night. Wow, I had slept through an entire day. I rolled out of bed and rubbed my eyes. I felt horrible. I snatched my phone from the night stand. My intention was to call my cousin. If anyone could make me feel better it was definitely her. After turning on my phone it alerted me that I had a new voicemail. I dialed in my password and listened. “Kate it’s Justin we really need to talk. I feel like an asshole. I know you said that you are done with us, but please call me back. I mean only if you want to. If you don’t call then I will leave you alone and I’ll respect you decision.”

I sat there for a minute thinking about whether or not I wanted to return his call. Yes, we could fix things for now, but was I really willing to ever go through this again, and undoubtedly it would happen again. Celebrities and normal people were not meant to date I thought to myself, but I should at least try to smooth things over so we could try to be friends. I decided to wait and call him the next day. Besides I didn’t really think that I should be that easy on him. “Fuck it I am calling him.” I said out loud as I dialed his number.

After three rings I was about to hang up, not wanting to leave a voicemail, when someone answered. “Hello.” said a female voice.

“Um I’m sorry I must have called the wrong number. I’m trying to get a hold of Justin.” I said.

“No, you’ve got the right number” the girl said rudely. “Is this Kate?”

“yes.” I answered slowly.

“Well, listen here bitch, he doesn’t want to talk to you. He’s moved on. He and I just had the most amazing sex and he is over you.”

“Congratulations to the both of you.” I said about to hang up the phone, but I heard Justin’s voice in the background.

“What the hell are you doing? Who is that on the phone?” he asked sounding irritated. I heard him struggle to take the phone away from the girl.

“Hello.” he said.

“Hi.” I replied.

“Kate is that you?” he asked.

“Yes, Justin it’s me, but I can tell you are busy so I will let you go. Goodbye.” I said feeling hurt. It had took him less than 24 hours to get over me.

“Wait!” He said. “Please don’t hang up.” He sounded like he was wasted. It got so loud in the background I could barely hear him when he said, “I want to talk to you. I thought you weren’t ever going to call me back.”

“Where are you?” I asked.

“I’m where we were when we first met.” he said slurring every word. “ I think I’m gonna puke.” He must have ran in the bathroom because it got a little quieter and I could hear him heaving and retching. “Uh-oh.” he said when he had finally stopped puking.

“What? What’s wrong?” I asked concerned.

“I’m gonna pass out.” he said.

And then the line went dead.
