A new world called California Part 10

CHAPTER 10
I arrived at the exclusive hospital where I would be interviewed with a few spare minutes. I decided to head inside. I walked in through the main entrance and up to the front desk. The woman behind it smiled and asked, "how can I help you?"
I smiled back and answered, "I have an interview with Doctor Sharpe."
"Okay. I will need to see a photo I.D. please." She said still smiling.
I noticed that some of her way too bright red lipstick was covering her front teeth as I handed her my drivers license. She pressed a few keys on the computers keyboard before handing back my I.D. "It’s on the third floor. I’ll call her secretary and let her know who you are."
"Ok thank you." I said smiling politely and heading for the elevator. I pressed the call button for the elevator and stood there with my arms crossed. The doors slammed open and I stepped inside. After pressing the large black number three I felt the elevator jerk a little as it began its way upward. Feeling the first pangs of anxiety I took a deep breath to try and relax myself. As I reached the third floor the doors slammed open once again. I stepped into the hallway. A sign hung on the wall that listed other doctors and arrows pointing which direction their office was in. I located Dr. Sharpe on the list, the small white arrow pointed to the left. Lucky for me it was the first office on the right. I opened the door and stepped quietly inside. I shut the door behind me and looked up. There was an extremely thin girl with very large breasts perched behind a desk enveloped in some sort of gossip with whoever she was on the phone with. I assumed she was the secretary. Not wanting to be rude I took a seat to wait for her to finish her seemingly important conversation. I was never one to eavesdrop , but she made what they were talking about seem so interesting I just couldn’t resist. "Well, in US weekly it said she was just some wanna-be actress, but shit if she can bag Justin Timberlake then I guess that gives us all hope." she gabbed. My face reddened because I had read that same article in that same magazine and I knew exactly who this woman and her fellow gossiper were talking about. Me. I sunk lower in the chair and silently thanked god that my face was completely unrecognizable in those photos. The secretary laughed and told the person that she had to go someone was in the office. They said their goodbyes and she hung up the phone.
"You must be Kate?" she said warmly
"Yes, that’s me." I replied standing up and taking a few steps closer to her desk.
"Well doctor is on the phone right now, but when she’s finished she’ll be right with you."
"Okay thank you." I said retreating back to my chair, but no sooner had I sat down when the doctor appeared in her doorway. I gave the man upstairs another silent thank you afraid that if I stayed out there her secretary would want to continue her conversation about Justin’s mystery girl, also known as myself, with me.
I took a seat on one of the expensive brown leather chairs inside the doctors office. Realizing my mistake I stood back up so I could properly introduce myself. "No, no sit down get comfortable." she said
I smiled timidly and took my seat.
"Well, Kate I’m Camille Sharpe and this resume I received from you is very impressive." I had sent it via email before I had moved out here and received a call a few days later from Camille asking if I could come for an interview.
"Thank you Dr. Sharpe." I said, my confidence boosted.
"Oh please call me Cammie," she said, "but anyway I see your from Michigan."
"Yes I am," I answered not really sure why this was relevant.
"Well so am I. I graduated with a bachelors from U of M before I transferred out here to USC to get my doctorate."
"Really?" I said feeling somewhat relieved to know that I wasn’t the only Michigander to travel out to this very different state.
"Honestly," she began, "you seem very well qualified for this job and I’d like to know if you could start next week?"
Without a single hesitation I answered, "That would be perfect."
"Great." she replied rising from her chair.
I followed suit. She shook my hand and explained to me that Samantha, her secretary, would fax my schedule to me within a day or two, but to be there at 9:00 sharp on Monday morning. She shook my hand again and I thanked her before making my way out the door. I stopped and gave Samantha, or Sam as she told me she preferred, my fax number.
It didn’t hit me until I was getting back into my car. I Kate, from Nowheresville, Michigan just got a job as a nurse at a famous California hospital for a doctor who was a plastic surgeon to the stars. So much for this stay being temporary I thought as I backed out of the parking lot and sped home.
