It was the beginning of sophomore year; New Year, new classes, new enemies, and no boyfriend. The only thing that hadn’t changed was my closest friend, Jade. I thought that this summer was going to be the best of my life, but it ended in tragedy.
For the last month, I had been trying to salvage a relationship that I thought I couldn’t live without. My boyfriend – now ex-boyfriend – Darren, had cheated on me with one of my close friends, Kelly, a week before my fourteenth birthday. Kelly told me about the affair a few days later, and I immediately broke off the relationship, heartbroken.
Kelly had told me that Darren kissed her, that she hadn’t done anything to provoke it. But honestly, Kell’s was very flirtatious. Darren on the other hand, owned up to his actions and tried to earn my trust back. And I still had strong feelings for him. With Darren’s apologies, it wasn’t very long until we were back together, trying to make a ruined relationship work.
It was two weeks later, while I was on vacation in California, that Darren called me and broke it off. I again suffered heartbreak, but this time I wasn’t even in the comfort of my own home.
When I finally returned home a few days later, I spent as much time with friends as possible, avoiding the persistent urge to cry. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long. I was soon using every shoulder I could find to cry on, feeding off of my friends’ comforting words.
And now, only a week after my most recent heartbreak, I had to face high school once again. But most importantly, I’d have to see Darren. I didn’t think I’d make it through it.
The first day of school was long and it seemed to stretch on and on. I hadn’t seen Darren – thank God – but knew that soon enough, I would have to. Although I hadn’t seen him, I did bump into Kelly.
Kelly never tried to earn my trust back. She only asked when I’d stop hating her and we could be friends again. Although it wasn’t right, I blamed her for what happened between Darren and I. My logic was that she ruined us, and that it was her fault that we’d split. It seemed easier to blame it on someone other than myself, when I shouldn’t have taken him back in the first place. But, I didn’t want to forgive Kell’s. She lied to me, tried to save our friendship by further destroying my relationship. So I continued to ignore her.
It was about the third day back to school when I saw him. I was eating lunch with a bunch of friends, when Tim walked into my life.
Time seemed to slow down as I watched him and his friend walk past me, not even realizing that I existed. When he was out of view, I turned to Tara.
“Is that Tim?” I asked, gripping onto her forearm.
“Yeah, I think so.” She replied, pulling her arm away. “Wow, he cut his hair off.”
I’d barely known Timothy last year, he just hung out in the same hallway Darren and I did. Even then, there was something about him that I felt pulled to. Some invisible connection I couldn’t seem to grasp. I tried to talk to him a few times, but every attempt ended in the same way: failure.
Over the summer, he’d slipped into the back of my mind, only to be thought of every once in a while. But when he walked by, it felt like I was being drawn to him once again, only this time, the connection between us somehow felt stronger.
“Rae?” Tara called.
“Uh, yeah,” I shook my head, attempting to clear my thoughts. “What’s up?”
“Why’d you ask about Tim?” She questioned me.
“I just didn’t recognize him, that’s all.” I lied.
“Yeah, he does look pretty different.”
Last May, Tim’s hair had covered almost all of his face like a thick, blonde curtain. And now, it was cut into a short, shaggy style. He dressed the same as last year; Black sweat shirt, band t-shirt, jeans, and slip on Vans shoes.
When the bell rang, I gathered up my books and headed off to class.

it should say, "fifteenth birthday". Small error, but still bothered me.
