Should Have Known

I walked for a few blocks before going into my favorite café. I took a seat at a booth and put my head down on the table.

“Hello again” a girls voice says. I looked up at Piper. Shit I forgot that she works on Thursday nights. I have had a thing for Jenna since I first got here and found this place.

“Hey Piper” I smiled sitting up a little straighter. She was beautiful. She had red/auburn hair and the most amazing green eyes I have ever seen. I have had girlfriends in the past. Well I have had girls that are friends. It’s safe to say that I am far from a virgin but my parents don’t need to know that.

“Are you okay Lucas? You look a little pale.” She asked taking a seat across from me. I felt her knee bump mine as she slid into the booth; it instantly sent a shock through me. God I wanted this girl. The little bell above the door rang signaling someone entering the café.

“Hey baby” Eli said when he came through the door. Perfect; it’s Eli. I remembered why I can’t have this amazingly beautiful girl; she has a boyfriend.

“Hey” she said as Eli slid into the booth with us. He grabbed her around the waist and pulled her in for a long kiss. I couldn’t deal with this right now.

“Okay well I am gonna go now” I said standing up and walking to the door. Piper started to protest but I was out the door before she could say much more on the subject. It was dark out and I should probably head home but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I just continued to walk with my head down and my hands in my pockets. I walked for about 5 blocks but stopped when I heard someone crying. On the corner of a building there was a girl with her knees pulled up to her chest and her head down.

“Excuse me, is everything alright?” I asked her kneeling down to her.

“I think so” she said slowly raising her head to look at me with her tear stained face.

“What’s your name?” I asked her putting my hand on her shoulder.

“Farren” she sniffed. She had dirty blonde hair that almost fell past her waist. She was wearing tattered jeans and a black button down shirt.

“I’m Lucas” I introduced myself “is there anything I can do to help you?”

“You can die” she said looking me straight in the eye.

“What?” I said more to myself than I did to her. I felt as if I couldn’t move and instantly knew who she was; well more what she was. She smiled at me when she knew she had me under her trance.

“I needed to be sure it was you” she told me; like I cared how she lured me to her, I was more pissed that I didn’t see her for what she truly was. I should have known. The pale, cold skin, I should have known. She got up in my face and smiled then punched me hard in the jaw.

“Fuck” I cursed under my breath; the girl packed a decent punch, I spit some blood out of my mouth as I laid helplessly on the ground. All I needed was a momentary distraction for her to loose a second of focus of her trance on me. At least then I could fight her off, but as it was my odds were not looking very good. I have killed over 11 vampires in my life that was another reason for moving around so much; so we could take out as many vampires as we possibly could if I could only gain a little control of myself I know I could push the trance off. Out of the corner of my eye saw and heard a trash can fall to the ground. This was it; my momentary distraction. Farren looked behind her where the noise had come from and her trance lifted the tiniest bit but I used it for all I could. I pushed her trance off me so hard that she stumbled back a step; confusion crossed her face when she saw me hop up to my feet. I smiled mockingly at her in triumph and kicked her full on in the stomach sending her flying backwards. I never really like fighting the girl vamps; it some how feels wrong. We are brought up to think that hitting a woman is bad but when it comes to vamp girls they can fight just as hard back, so that takes a little regret off my mind. Farren hopped up quickly and crouched in a defensive stance.

“Lucas?” a small voice said from behind me; it was Piper. I looked back only for a second not wanting to take my eyes off Farren for a second.

“Piper, get out of here! Run!”
