The Innocent {Chapter 12}

Drama Created on 8-28-08 Views(198) Story Rating G

I sat at the table the next morning not saying anything. Braven had made pancakes and bacon and placed a plate full in front of me. I didn’t have it in me to eat right now. I could tell my eyes were red and swollen from the night before. Rowen sat across from me not touching his food either. Braven took her seat between us and started eating.

“Aren’t you hungry?” Braven asked me politely. She was being so nice and I felt horrible for the way I was acting. I looked at my plate and took a small piece of bacon braking of small bits and popped them into my mouth. It was surprisingly good.

“Row, please eat” she pleaded with her brother who still hadn’t touched his food.

“I’m sorry B I’m just not hungry this morning” he stood up and placed his plate next to the sink then walked out the metal door closing it quietly behind him. Braven sighed.

“It’s me isn’t it?” I asked her putting down my bacon.

“No, no it’s not you he gets this way sometimes” she breathed. “I swear his menstrual cycle is worse than mine” she joked trying to lighten the moment. I laughed politely at her comment. I looked towards the door again.

“Where did he go?” I asked.

“Across the hall probably” she got up and started washing the dishes.

“What’s across the hall?” I asked curiously.

“Why don’t you see for yourself?” she smiled. I got up leaving my plate and walked to the metal door opening it slowly. Across the hall a few feet to the left there was another large metal door. I opened it and peered inside. Most of the floor was padded mat, there was a mirrored wall on the far right hand wall, there were weight machines lined on the back wall, and in the far corner across from the door there was a punching bag hanging from the ceiling. Rowen had taped his hands and was punching the bag so hard I thought he would break his hand. I knew that he knew I was there even though his back was to me. I crossed the room at what I thought was a slow pace but I managed to get to him in a matter of seconds. I leaned against the wall facing Rowen as he continued to punch the bag with all his might.

“You were right” I mumbled under my breath, I did think he had heard me but he stopped punching and held the bag still with his hands. He continued to look at the bag instead of my face.

“I wish I hadn’t been” he sighed. He looked at me for the first time that morning.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, and as if on queue one of my head splitting headache came. Either I was getting better at dealing with the pain or they were getting better. I closed my eyes and rested my head against the wall waiting for it to pass. A minute later I was fine. I opened my eyes and found Rowen staring at me anxiously as sweat dripped from his face.

“Are they getting better yet?” he asked somehow knowing what had happened.

“Slowly” I answered gazing into his eyes.

“But other than the headaches, you are doing well?” he asked.

“Other than the headaches, the hole in my heart, and the constant soreness of my muscles I am doing terrific.” I smiled sarcastically.

“And your hands?” he pointed to the rag bandages tied around my hands.

“Oh, yeah” I chuckled under my breath “I didn’t know my own strength” I quoted him. He was silent. I walked up to the bag staring at it for a moment then I drew back my fist and punched it. Rowen held the bag as I hit it again. He let go the bag and came around and inspected me as I continued to punch.

“Widen your stance a little” he said, I did. He examined me a bit longer before stopping me. “You throw a good punch for a beginner” he said. I was beginning to think it wasn’t possible for him to smile but then he surprised me and let a little smile slip. I smiled back at him.

“Go get changed” he said unwrapping his hands.

“What? What for?” I asked confused.

"Well you can't expect to start training in jeans" he smiled again.
