The Innocent
|
I walked through a field of green and yellow grass in my bare feet. I was in an enclosed little field surrounded by luscious green trees. I felt the wind blow my flowing white sundress against my legs. The breeze blew my wavy brown hair out of my face as I stared around at my beautiful surroundings. Someone was whispering something into the wind but I couldn’t understand. The voice was soothing; it did not scare me. I twirled around trying to locate the speaker of such comforting voice. But I saw nothing. Someone’s hands wrapped around my waist and pulled me back into their chest. The faceless stranger was the one I had heard whispering to me. Danielle. The voice said my name. Open your eyes.
In that instant my eyes flew open, but only to revile that I had been dreaming again. I sat up in my bed and rubbed my face before opening my eyes again. I looked about my room noticing that everything was in place as it was supposed to be; my bed against the wall, my computer desk across from my bed on the other wall, my dresser at the end of my bed, and all my dirty laundry on the floor. I swung my legs over the side of my bed and stood up slowly trying not to let the blood rush to my head. I slipped a robe over my boy-shorts under ware and white beater then walked out to the kitchen.
“Did you catch a glimpse of your faceless mystery man yet?” Michelle my roommate asked without looking up from reading her morning paper. This had not been the first time I had had this dream in fact I had had this dream for 5 straight days now; but somehow it always seems to surprise me.
“I wish” I mumbled as I poured myself a cup of coffee and took a seat next to her at the table. I rummaged through the paper trying to find my favorite section.
“It’s under sports” Michelle said not even bothering to ask what I was looking for. But sure enough there lay the comic section right under the sports section. I smiled at her; she knows me so well. I took a quick look at the date in the upper right hand corner of the comics.
“I can’t believe it is Sunday already!” I complained “wasn’t it just Friday? Where did the weekend go?” I asked more to myself. I looked up at Michelle who had a hint of worry across her forehead.
“What’s up?” I asked her. She just shook her head for a moment.
“Do you remember Maria Conway and Connor Harrison?” she asked.
“Yeah,” I didn’t see how this was relevant. I had had a class with Connor my freshman year; we were both majoring in pediatric medicine, but he switched majors after meeting Maria. I forget what she majored in but Connor and her started dating and she got him hooked on whatever she was studying.
“There missing” Michelle said flatly.
“What?” I was kind of shocked, New York was a big city, you read about disappearances all the time but for me to actually know these people, it was different. Michelle read my shocked expression and laid the paper in front of me. Sure enough Maria and Connor’s pictures were there right under the big bold MISSING headline.
