Fred’s diner, had been open for about ten years now, the owners name is Fred, but that’s what he likes to be called. He has always been there for me, he’s like a big brother. Dustin, Katie and I walked in and sat down at the booth Dustin and I have always sat in. We scanned the menu, within 45 seconds, Dustin and I knew what we wanted. Fred saw us walk in he came over shook Dustin hand asking how everything was going. He gave me a hug. He looked over and saw Katie, “now who is this?” he asked. “Oh you buy the old Reagan house?”

            “No Fred this is my girlfriend Katie…” Dustin answered

“Nice to meet you” Katie added

“You too young lady.” He smiled at Katie, and looked towards me and gave me the I'm sorry look, this look I have gotten so many times before. He went back to the kitchen to grab a order pad.

            “What are you girls getting?” asked Dustin as his eyes darted from Katie at me.

“I think I'm gonna get the house salad, with ranch,” Katie answered.

“Hunny, you don’t have to diet, its summer vacation, remember?” Dustin started.

“I was thinking about getting a salad too,” I interrupted him.

He looked at me puzzled, and said “but Emi…?”

Why am I being nice to her, I thought to myself. “yeah I had a burger, yesterday”

“That never stop you before, we had burgers everyday last summer!” he said puzzled and confused.

“A salad just sounds good, that’s all Dustin, its not like I'm going to starve!” I said getting a little angry with myself, for sticking up for Katie.

            “See Dustin, just because we are ordering a salad doesn’t mean we think we are fat, we just feel like having a salad,” Katie added.

            Then Fred came back to take our order he said, “burger and fries, for Dustin and Emi, and what do you want young lady?”

            “No ill have a salad” I corrected him.

“I’ll have a salad also,” Katie told Fred

“Ok…what about you boy?” he asked and looked at Dustin.

            “Burger and fries, I haven’t changed,” he said.

            I didn’t look Dustin or Fred in the eyes because I knew that they would give me odd looks, because I get a burger and fries, I have since I can remember. In a matter of minutes, our food was done. Burger smelled so good, but I couldn’t bring myself to asked for a bite, but I did steal a few fries

Fred brought the bill, it was $9.35 “damn I think this will be the cheapest bill we have ever had here,” Dustin said taking out his wallet.

“I got this one,” I said grabbing the bill.

“No its fine, I got it” he argued

            “No I still owe you from last summer”

            “So! I got it”

            I pulled out a ten and gave it to Dustin, “I'm paying,” I said.

“Fine, I’ll get the ice cream”

            “Oh, well I can’t go, I have to go unpack,” I lied.

            “No, you don’t Emi, come on you just got here,” he begged.

            “No,” I said, “I’ll see you guys later.” I slide out of the booth and walked out the door.

            “Katie, ill be right back, something is wrong with her” he said kissed her cheek and slid out of the booth, and ran after me.

            Katie sat there wondering what was going on, not saying a word.

            “EMI!” he yelled.

            “What?” I asked, stopping in my tracks and turning around.

            “What’s wrong?” he asked as he caught up to me.

            “Nothing” I answered with no emotion in my voice.

            “Emi, I have known you long enough that you don’t order salads, for no reason, and you never pass up ice cream! It’s your favorite part of summer. Now tell me what is wrong,” he said looking in to my eyes.

            “I should go,” I said trying to hold back the tears. I started walking back to my house.

            “Emi! Wait up” he yelled. This time I didn’t stop.
