Saving Myself ch 17

I woke up in a dark room that I didn’t recognize, and I had a splitting headache. The back of my head was in pain, and I didn’t know what was going on. My vision was blurred for some time as I struggled to make out the objects around the dark room. There was a little light seeping through a window, but it wasn’t enough for me to figure out where I was. I wanted to get up, but my body wouldn’t let me. Actually, it wasn’t my body that was holding me back, it was rope. I looked down in horror to realize that I was tied up to a chair and I was still wearing the wedding dress. Terror filled me as I realized that Gabe had caught up to me and hit me in the back of the head with something. I prayed that Sam got away, and that Gabe hadn’t found him. Suddenly, I heard a noise as footsteps resounded.
The noise was coming from above me, so I guessed that I was in some sort of basement. As the figure reached the bottom of the stairs, the light from the window illuminated his face. Sure enough, it was Gabe. He smiled his evil smile at me. “Ah… You’re awake,” he stated as he reached up to turn on a light bulb. I shivered in fear as the room came into view and my suspicions were confirmed; I was in some sort of basement. “Where am I?” I asked, fearful of the answer. Gabe smiled as he walked over and opened the blinds. He went behind me and untied me from the chair; I was still tied up, so he led me to the window. He pointed out and replied, “What do you see?” I scaled the area and saw off in the distance Zelda’s pizzeria. My eyes widened as I realized I was back in Ruckshire. “But… how?” I wondered. Gabe smiled. “After I captured you, I forced you to take a sleeping pill, and we boarded a plane and headed back here,” he explained. I shook my head as he brought me back to the chair and tied me to it again.
“What did you do to Sam?” I asked in fear. Gabe rolled his eyes. “Surely you know that I wouldn’t kidnap you if I captured Sam… I told you that I don’t get distracted by my personal vendettas with others,” he exclaimed as he sat down in a chair nearby. “You’re using me as bait,” I commented as I struggled to pull myself out of the ropes without him noticing. Gabe nodded his head. “See; you’re smarter than you think,” he replied. “Hopefully he’ll show up soon, or you’ll be very sorry,” he added as he pulled out a pocket knife. Suddenly, he pulled out his phone and walked towards me. I shuddered as I wondered what he was going to do to me. He came close to my face and put the knife against my cheek. “STOP!” I yelled in fear. Gabe laughed at my futile attempt.
“It won’t hurt that much, sweetheart, I promise,” he replied as he cut a little gash in my cheek. I whimpered from the pain and struggled not to cry. It hurt badly, and it was beginning to sting. “Why are you doing this?” I asked as a tear slid down my cheek. Gabe opened his cell phone and took a picture of my face. “I’m sending this to Sammy boy as an incentive to bring him here faster,” he replied with a sinister look on his face. He walked back to his chair and sat down as the blood began to trail down my cheek. The tears were mixing in with it, and it caused it to sting even more. I was terrified, and I knew that I had to do something before it was too late.
“Gabe, you’re not as bad as you want people to believe,” I stated suddenly, hoping to appeal to his sense of reason and compassion. Gabe stared at me with dead eyes, almost as if he was trying to ignore my words. “You’re different from Levi… Levi was an evil, sadistic, son of a bitch, and you are never going to be that way,” I added, wondering if I had hit a nerve. I could see Gabe tense up a bit at what I had said. “Shut up,” he muttered as he leaned back in the chair. I shook my head. I wasn’t going to shut my mouth if it was working… “Gabe, you have something far greater to offer than Levi ever did. You get the job done, and you know what you’re doing. You must know another way to help save Sam… I know you don’t have to, but I also know that if you do, it will be worth your while.” Gabe looked over at me skeptically. He sat up and moved to the edge of the chair. “How’s that?” he asked. I sighed with relief as I realized he was taking my bait. I struggled to get out of the rope as it loosened a bit and my hand had almost come free. “I’m sure the guy that you work for would think you’re very smart. Your job is really just to protect the future… If there was a way of protecting the future without saving Sam, everybody would win,” I replied.
Gabe rolled his eyes. I guess he didn’t like my idea. “There is only one other way to save the future,” he finally stated. My ears were open, and my eyes were wide with surprise. I didn’t think there was any other way… Apparently there was… “Well?” I asked, feeling impatient as my right hand was finally free. I just had to get my left hand out and I would be able to untie the rest of me. “Instead of killing Sam, you would have to kill his reaper… Which you should all ready know… It would technically even things out,” he answered. I felt so stupid; it all made sense. It worked the first time… “But don’t even think about it; there’s no way I’m dying, sweetheart,” he added, seeing that I was thinking about doing just that. It didn’t matter what he said. There was no way I was going to let him take Sam. He would have to kill me first.
The sun had gone down, and Gabe had gone upstairs to eat something. I was still trying to get my left hand out of the rope, and it was beginning to take too much effort. I was tired and hungry, and my wrist was extremely sore. The blood on my cheek had dried, so it was hard and crusty, and some of it had even gotten onto my dress. I felt terrible because Emma’s dress was now ruined. It was a symbol of her love, and now it was tarnished. I struggled to pull my hand out, using all of the strength that I had left. I tried to focus on something that would give me adrenaline, and all I could think about was the day that Sam killed Levi. It made my blood boil and my heart rate rise. Finally, my left hand was free and I moved to my legs. I tried not to make any noise as I occasionally glanced up so Gabe wouldn’t find me like that.
If he knew I was untied, I was afraid of what he was going to do. I had no idea where Sam was, or how close he was to Ruckshire, and it was making me nervous. I wondered if he was okay and if he would come and find me. I knew he would; of course he would. He was Sam… He was MY Sam, and he wasn’t about to leave me behind. I stood up and struggled to find something sharp to use as a weapon against Gabe. I had no idea what I would do when he found me, but I knew I was going to be ready, and my guard was going to be up. I spotted a bat in the corner of the room and ran towards it. It would at least knock him out… Suddenly I heard the door open as footsteps resounded the little room. I felt myself grow more tense as I waited for the perfect moment to whack Gabe in the head. “Stop, Kat; I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” I heard Gabe say as he made his way down the stairs. He was holding someone by his arms, and I realized it was Sam.
My eyes widened as I lost my grip on the bat and it came to a thud on the ground. “Sam!” I yelled in relief. “You’re okay,” Sam replied, also in relief. Gabe rolled his eyes as he pushed Sam into the middle of the room where my chair was. Then he turned to me in annoyance and picked up the bat, setting it on the table in the corner. “I told you your attempts are futile, sweetheart. You can’t save Sam. How many times am I supposed to tell you that? I really think you must be deaf because you can’t seem to hear me,” he stated loudly. He was angry now, and he had lost all patience with me. “I wasn’t trying to be the bad guy here. I told you very straightforward what I was about, and I gave you time to say goodbye. Then you go and run off with the man to a remote country in Europe hoping that I wouldn’t find you. Then you go to marry him, and I’m just sick of it. You’ve taken my kindness too far,” he added.
I shook my head as the lump in my throat was growing too big. I felt the tears streaming down my face as Gabe pulled out his pocket knife. “PLEASE! DON’T!” I yelled in a desperate attempt to stop him. My heart was hurting for the one I loved. I couldn’t watch him die in front of me. I would never be able to live without him. I couldn’t breathe anymore, and I began to hyperventilate. I started to wheeze as Gabe looked at me in confusion. “What’s wrong with her?” He asked. I looked up into Sam’s eyes and saw the pain in them. He wanted to walk over to me and rub my back and tell me everything was going to be okay… But he couldn’t. “She’s having a panic attack,” he stated. Gabe rolled his eyes. “Breathe, Kat,” he commanded me. “You’re not supposed to die on my watch,” he added.
He came closer to Sam and lunged the knife forward. Sam managed to move out of the way just in time. I struggled to find some way to help him as he darted in and out, missing the knife by mere margins. “AH!” he suddenly screamed as the knife cut his arm. It went pretty deep, and it began to bleed. My heart broke into pieces at the sight. I could see the pain in his eyes and I just wanted to grab him and take him out of there. “Stop moving and this will hurt a whole lot less!” Gabe yelled as he lunged at Sam again. I couldn’t take it. I couldn’t watch this happen. I wasn’t going to allow it to happen. I ran to the table and grabbed the bat. This was my time to do something other than sit on the side and watch others fight for me. I threw the bat behind me and imagined Gabe’s head was like a baseball. I felt all of the weight as I brought the bat forward with full force as it connected with Gabe’s head. He hit the ground like a fly. I sighed in relief as I looked over at Sam, who was trying to stop the blood in his arm.
“Come on, Sam!” I yelled as he jumped over Gabe’s body and we ran up the stairs and out of the little house. It was dark outside, but it was also raining. Thunder sounded like an explosion as lightning brought parts of the town into light. We didn’t know where to go. I didn’t want to cause anyone else harm, or put them in danger, so as we ran, we ended up in a little park. The ground was soggy and wet with mud, and my high heels were sinking into the ground. Sam grabbed my hand and we made it to the edge of the park that went straight down a steep and high hill. I looked over Sam as the water began to wash his cut. The last time we were out in the rain like this was at Millie’s house… It was in far better circumstances, but Gabe was there then too. I didn’t know how much time I had, but I jumped into Sam’s arms and held him close.
“I love you, Sam… I love you so much, and I don’t ever want to let you go,” I stated through my sobs. Sam put his head on top of mine and put one hand on the back of my head and the other around my waist. “I love you too,” he replied as his voice cracked. For the first time since I knew Sam, he was genuinely scared. I could hear it in his voice. He didn’t know whether he was going to live or die, and neither did I. I looked up into his eyes and felt the weight of the world that I was carrying had been on his shoulders all along. I reached up and touched his face as he reached up and touched my cut. “The bastard,” he muttered as he kissed my cheek to make it better. I closed my eyes and felt his pain. Flashes of the day Levi died came into my mind. That day it was raining too.
How funny Mother Nature was with weather. It always seemed to rain on the worst days of my life. I remembered how I had given up on everything and just wanted Levi to kill me. I wanted the rain to wash over me and take me away… Now I wanted the rain to take us both away. Sam and I were now one; even though we weren’t married yet, I felt as though we had become one person. We knew each other inside and out, and we knew each other’s thoughts. We were the same person now; if Gabe killed Sam, he was killing me too. “I can’t live without you,” I stated. Sam struggled to smile. “I told you; I’m not going anywhere, Kat,” he replied. I shook my head as he kissed me. Oh how I wished that kiss would just last forever…
“Break it up; you two make me want to puke,” I heard in the background. I froze as I turned to see Gabe had arrived, just in time to finish his job. He had come right on cue… “You gave me a nasty bruise, sweetheart, but I’m sure the job I’m about to do will hurt you much more than this bruise,” he stated as he ran at Sam. Sam pushed me out of the way and struggled with Gabe as he brought out his pocket knife. I watched in horror as I realized this time, there was nothing that I could do to save Sam. The rain began to pound harder as the two men slipped occasionally in the wet grass. At one point, Sam had the knife, at another point, Gabe had the knife. Finally, Sam knocked the knife off into the distance and it became an all out fist fight.
“Leave me the hell alone! I didn’t even do anything to the future,” he stated as he put up his hands. Gabe let out a sinister laugh. “You didn’t do it, but you would have if you had the chance, correct? And besides, it’s the future that you screwed up,” he replied. Sam grew frustrated. “So go bother my future self,” he stated mockingly. Gabe was growing impatient. “You are one hard man to kill, Sam Livingston,” he replied as he lunged at Sam. But Sam moved out of the way and Gabe began to fall over the edge of the hill. He grabbed onto a rock protruding out of the side and held on for dear life. As Sam leaned over the edge, he saw the terror in Gabe’s face. I watched and waited for Sam to push him off so he would go careening to his death. But he didn’t…
