CHAPTER 16

I couldn’t sleep for very long, considering it was FINALLY my wedding day.  I got up early with the birds and slipped into the beautiful wedding dress.  As I stared at myself in the mirror, I suddenly felt sad.  My mother wouldn’t be here to see me get married…  She wouldn’t be able to take pictures and be her annoying old self.  I missed Sarah terribly, but I knew I couldn’t call her…  My eyes slowly moved towards the phone on the nightstand.  I could just tell her I’m getting married and that I miss her…  That’s all I would say, and then I would hang up.  I had all ready agreed within myself.  I marched over to the phone and dialed the once familiar number.  “Hello?” Sarah answered.  It was odd to hear her voice.  It had been so long…  I felt a lump in my throat and I almost couldn’t speak.

“Mom,” I muttered, hoping she would hear me and understand.  There was a slight pause.  “Baby?  Kat?  Is that you?” she finally asked.  A tear slid down my cheek as I quickly wiped it away.  “Yes, mom, it’s me.  I can’t talk for very long, and I know you understand, but I just wanted to tell you that I’m okay.  And… I’m getting married today,” I replied, knowing she would want more info, but I just couldn’t give it to her.  I looked at my watch and saw the time tick away.  “You are?  But Kat…” Sarah began, but I interrupted her.  “Mom, I have to go.  I love you,” I assured her through my tears as the lump in my throat got bigger and bigger.  I could hear Sarah sobbing on the other line and I wished I could be there to comfort her.  She must be so alone…  “I love you too, Kat,” she finally replied.

And with that, I hung up the phone.  I had hoped that it wouldn’t cause me trouble later on, but I really needed to tell her I was okay.  She could have thought I was dead for all I knew.  It had been so long since I last contacted her…  I turned back to the mirror and wiped the tears away because I had all ready done my makeup.  I looked beautiful, except my eyes were a little puffy.  I knew Sam would notice, but he would understand.  Suddenly there was a knock at the door.  “Come in if you’re not Sam,” I answered.  Emma entered laughing at my comment.  “You look wonderful,” she gasped, taking me in.  “Thanks,” I replied, looking down at my feet.  “Are you ready?” she asked, searching my face.  I let out a sigh.  This was as a good a time as any…  Sarah would understand, and she would be with me in spirit…  “Yes… I’m ready,” I replied.

We slowly made our way down the stairs and I felt like I almost couldn’t breathe…  Maybe the corset bodice was on too tight…  Emma brought me into the kitchen.  “Wait here until the music starts…  Oh, this is going to be so wonderful!” she exclaimed with enthusiasm.  I smiled at her and sat down on the kitchen chair.  I couldn’t believe this was it…  We were going to get married, and it was going to be wonderful.  It wasn’t the wedding I had dreamed of, or even the location, but it didn’t matter.  I was finally going to become Mrs. Sam Livingston…  I heard the music begin to play; it was Emma on the piano, but it sounded beautiful.  As I popped my head through the living room, I saw some other people had come; people that I didn’t know.

Suddenly Roger’s head popped out in front of me and it startled me.  “I’ll be escorting you down the aisle, ma’am,” he informed me as he held out his arm.  I smiled and came out and took it.  We began to walk down the little walkway provided by the chairs, and I looked up to see Sam.  He looked as handsome as ever, and he had gained back all the weight he lost in Croatia.  He looked drop-dead gorgeous.  I felt myself blush as he looked at me.  His eyes told everything he was feeling, and it gave me pleasure to make him feel that way.  Before I knew it, we were standing in front of each other, and I was holding his hands.  Emma came up behind me and took my bouquet of white daisies.  The preacher smiled down at us and began.  “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the wondrous union of two lovers, Samuel David Livingston, and Katarina Anastasia Volstead…”  I smiled up at Sam, who was beaming with pride as he looked down at me.

It felt as though I was the only person in the room as Sam gazed into my eyes.  I was just so overjoyed…  “I love you,” Sam mouthed to me as he squeezed my right hand.  I began to blush as I returned his squeeze.  “Samuel Livingston, do you take Katarina Volstead to be your lawfully wedded wife, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do you part?”  Sam winked at me and replied, “I do.”  We were halfway there…  I couldn’t believe it.  My dream was about to come true.  “And do you, Katarina Volstead, take Samuel Livingston to be your lawfully wedded husband, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do you part?”  Moments that Sam and I had shared since I met him began to rush through my mind.

I saw the day he spilled the coffee on me, I saw our first official date…  I saw all of our happiness, and I just couldn’t wait to make more memories with him.  I was about to answer, when I was interrupted.  “I cannot allow this wedding to happen,” someone stated.  Everyone turned to the back to see who had made such a harsh statement.  My eyes widened as fear began to grip me.  Who said that?  I looked up at Sam who was just as confused as I was.

“I object to this marriage,” the same voice stated again.  “Who said that?” The preacher asked, scaling the little crowd to see the culprit.  A man stepped forward and my heart almost stopped.  I knew that I must have looked as white as a sheet when he appeared.  I couldn’t believe it.  “Hi, there, Kat,” the man stated as he waved at me with an evil grin on his face.  It was Gabe.  He had found us!  I couldn’t believe it!  “I see you’re not very happy to see me…  But you know, you’re the one who has been causing me lots of trouble…  And I’ve got to say, you are one good escape artist,” he began as he stepped forward.  “By the time I realized you two had gone to Croatia, you were all ready gone…  Thank goodness you made that phone call this morning, or I would have found you too late,” he added.

My eyes widened.  The phone call I made to Sarah was enough for Gabe to trace me.  “But… that’s impossible…  The call wasn’t even 30 seconds,” I muttered.  Gabe smiled as he continued to move forward.  Everyone around us was confused, wondering what exactly was going on.  “It was just 30 seconds.  I was ecstatic to find that you were here…  I jetted over here and found you were having a lovely wedding… How wonderful…  I think it’s a great idea; marry him before he keels over…  But I’m here, and I’m impatient, so I guess your attempt is null and void…” Gabe explained.  I shook my head.  “I told you before; you can’t have Sam,” I replied.  Suddenly Emma, Bert, and Roger realized just who this man was.  Roger came up slowly behind him and was about to tackle him, but Gabe put his hand up.  “I wouldn’t do that if I were you, buddy…  I’m not your average man,” he stated as he turned around and pushed Roger into a wall.

Emma and Bert were astonished.  I turned to Sam and felt tears in my eyes.  “Run, Sam…  RUN!” I yelled as Gabe was momentarily distracted.  We both began to run out of the house as Emma threw keys at Sam.  He quickly got inside the car, but my dress was weighing me down.  “Sam, if I don’t make it, just keep going!” I yelled, knowing that he would want to save me.  Sam hesitated, but decided to wait a few more seconds.  That’s when my dress got caught in the doorway.  I struggled to rip it, but there was no use.  “Stop fighting this, Kat…  It’s time,” I heard Gabe say from behind me.  And that was when everything went pitch black.
