CHAPTER 14

“I think we should get married,” Sam exclaimed as we sat at the kitchen table one morning after tiptoeing around the topic of Gabe.  My eyes widened as I looked at Sam in disbelief.  “You have got to be kidding me, Sam,” I replied, pushing his suggestion aside.  Sam shook his head as he reached across the table to grab my hand.  “I am serious; we’ve been waiting for so long, and I can’t wait any longer.  I want you to be Mrs. Sam Livingston.  And it makes sense; this would be a wonderful place for a family, and my cousins are all here for the wedding,” he explained.  But I wasn’t having it.  “Have you all ready forgotten about Gabe?  I know you don’t want to talk about it, but I think he was the one who came in here that day…”  Sam shook his head.  “Don’t; don’t ruin this,” he replied.

I shook my head in confusion.  “Ruin what?” I asked, feeling frustrated by the whole conversation.  “This place has done wonders for both of us…  Don’t bring up Gabe when everything is so perfect,” Sam replied.  I pulled my hand away from Sam and got up from the table.  He was pretending like nothing was wrong.  That wasn’t going to work.  “This place is NOT perfect!  No place is perfect!  No matter what we do, or where we go, Gabe is always there.  You can’t pretend like everything is fine!  Everything is NOT fine, and I am sick of you pinning the bad things that happen on me!” I yelled.  I didn’t even realize how angry I was until the words came out.  Sam’s eyes widened.  It was quiet for some time as I just stood there, staring off into space.  “Kat…” Sam finally called.

I hesitated to look at him.  But I finally turned and looked at him.  As I looked at his eyes, I could see hurt in them.  “I don’t blame you for anything,” he assured me as he stood up and came towards me.  I felt a lump in my throat as I realized that I felt as though Sam did blame me for all of the bad things that were happening.  “You are wonderful; you are the most amazing person I have ever met, and I do NOT blame you for all of this…  It is NOT your fault, do you hear me?  This is not your fault, Kat,” he assured me.  That was when the tears began to fall.  Sam put his hands on either side of my face and forced me to look at him.  “This is not your fault, Kat,” he stated again.  “It… it just feels that way,” I replied through my tears.  Sam shook his head as he pulled me to his chest.  I put my arms around him and began to sob.  “I love you, you know that?” Sam exclaimed.

I looked up from his now tear-stained shirt and nodded.  “I know,” I replied.  “I love you too,” I added as Sam leaned down and kissed me.  “Ahem.”  We abruptly froze and pulled our lips from each other to turn to the sound that had interrupted us.  We turned to see Roger and Burt in the doorway.  My face began to turn all sorts of shades of red.  “Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time Roger and I have walked in on Sammy boy making out with someone,” Burt stated as he went to the fridge.  I looked up at Sam in confusion.  “We weren’t making out, Burt,” he defended himself.  Roger began to laugh.  “More like they were eating each other’s faces,” he added.  Burt began to laugh as he pulled out some orange juice and began pouring it into two glasses.  “What are they talking about?” I asked quietly.

Sam shook his head and struggled to ignore them.  “You’re lucky you didn’t know Sam back then.  He didn’t quite know how to kiss,” Roger replied as he turned towards me.  Burt continued to laugh.  “Yeah; it was like he was attacking them instead of kissing them… He used to practice on a mirror,” he added.  That was when I started to laugh.  Sam was getting frustrated.  “You kissed mirrors?” I asked through my laughter.  Sam pulled away and gave Burt and Roger evil looks.  “No!  They’re just trying to be funny,” he replied through his teeth.  Roger and Burt just laughed as they walked towards me.  “Sure… That’s what he’s been telling himself for all these years,” Roger stated with a wink.  We all continued to laugh as Sam’s fuse grew shorter.  “Whatever!  They’re all liars!  You two are so annoying,” he replied as he walked out of the kitchen.  After the laughter had died down, I threw up a prayer of thanks for the two comical men who were making my life just a little bit easier.

We all stared at the picture, struggling to figure out what exactly it was that we were looking at.  Emma and Burt stood in front of us holding the picture, beaming.  “It’s… it’s…” Roger struggled to say something.  “What is it?” he added.  I heard Sam snicker from behind me.  “Where is it?” I added as we searched the picture.  “It’s our baby,” Emma replied proudly.  Burt pointed to a splotch on the picture with his index finger.  “There he is,” he exclaimed with glee.  Emma turned her gaze towards him.  “You don’t know that it’s a boy,” she reminded him.  Burt shrugged his shoulders.  “Sure I do; all the Potter men have sons…  It’s a proven fact.  Besides, I can feel it,” he replied.  Emma rolled her eyes with a smile.  “Well, whatever it is, we are going to love this child,” she added.

With that, she got up and went into the kitchen to retrieve tea.  I followed after her.  “This is so exciting,” I exclaimed as I helped her by grabbing some cups and placing them on a tray.  Emma nodded.  She seemed to be so much happier, and she was glowing.  Being pregnant was doing wonders for her.  “I can’t wait… In a few months, we’ll be parents,” she exclaimed happily.  I smiled as I took the kettle from her and poured some tea in each cup.  “What about you?” Emma asked suddenly.  I turned to her in confusion.  “What about me?” I asked.  Emma shrugged her shoulders.  “When are you going to marry our boy and have kids of your own?”  My eyes widened.  “I… I…” At first, I couldn’t answer her.  I was too shocked.  “I’m only 20 years old…  I think there is A LOT more time before I have my own kids… Besides, we’ve got this huge burden above us that it wouldn’t be very smart for us to bring someone else into the madness,” I replied.

Emma nodded.  “But you still want to get married, don’t you?” she asked, searching my face.  Now I was relieved.  No more talk of babies…  “Of course; I can’t wait to be Mrs. Samuel Livingston,” I replied.  Emma took the tray from me.  “Then why don’t you two get married all ready?” she asked.  I shrugged my shoulders.  “We’ve all been wondering,” she added.  “I want to get married, I just don’t know if we should do it with Gabe on our tail,” I replied.  Emma shook her head.  “You never know what could happen tomorrow.  We have no guarantees in life, Katarina.  All we have is today,” she stated as she headed back into the living room.  I followed after her.  Sam stood up from the couch and came towards me.  “What were you two talking about?” he asked as he put his arms around me.  I shrugged my shoulders.  “Well… I think we should get married.”

Sam’s eyes widened as he looked at me in disbelief.  “You’re serious?” he asked.  I smiled as I turned around and he put his hands on my waist.  “I am; we have no guarantees in life…  All we have is today,” I replied, using Emma’s words.  Sam’s face lightened as he had the biggest smile on his face.  “We’re getting married,” he replied as he kissed me on the cheek.  “What’s going on?” Burt asked, looking over at us.  Sam and I looked at each other and smiled.  “Well… It looks like we’re getting married,” Sam replied.  Everyone smiled happily.  “When?” Roger asked.  I shrugged my shoulders.  “As soon as possible,” I replied.   “I can’t wait anymore.”
