CHAPTER 9

Terror filled my entire body as I suddenly could no longer move a single muscle.  Sam turned to me in confusion as Gabe stared me down.  I couldn’t believe he had found us.  I thought we were safe in this little bubble, but I was wrong.  “What… what,” I stammered, unable to form any coherent sentences.  Gabe smiled a devilish smile at me as he stood up from the couch.  “Aren’t you happy to see me, Kat?  This must be Sam,” he stated as he inched closer to us.  I grabbed Sam’s arm and pulled him further away.  “Stay away from him, you bastard,” I warned through my teeth as Sam’s eyes widened at my attitude.  Gabe let out a huff as he kept inching closer.  “Who is this guy?” Sam muttered, leaning into my ear.  Gabe put out his hand.  “Allow me to introduce myself.  I am Gabriel, or Gabe; I prefer Gabe.  Anyhow, you see, I am what you would call a ‘reaper’ so to speak, and I’m here to get what’s mine,” he explained.

I cringed at his words.  He made it all sound so normal.  But it wasn’t normal.  “What exactly is yours?” Sam questioned as I felt his muscles tighten.  “You,” Gabe answered simply.  Sam’s eyes widened as Millie gasped.  “This is the man you were talking about, isn’t it?  I made a terrible mistake,” she whined as she reprimanded herself.  I turned to her.  “You didn’t know, Millie,” I assured her as I quickly turned my gaze back on the vulture ready to devour my fiancé.  “What is it going to take for you to leave us alone?” I asked in desperation.  Gabe let out a cynical laugh.  “I’ve all ready explained this to you, sweetie.  You-can’t-say-anything-to stop me,” he replied slowly as if I was a dumbass.  “Now, Sammy boy,” he turned his attention towards Sam, “it’s time for you to say goodbye to the earth and your fiancé here.  We’re going to a far better place…”

“No!” I yelled as I searched the room for something heavy or hard.  My eyes scanned the entire area when I found one of Millie’s vases on the table.  I moved away from Sam and quickly grabbed the vase while I turned to Millie with an apologetic look.  “I told you before, and I’m not going to say it again; YOU CAN’T HAVE HIM!” I yelled as I smashed the vase over Gabe’s head.  He was out cold in a matter of seconds.  I turned to Sam and ran up the stairs to grab our things.  I was down in seconds, turning to Millie.  “I’m sorry, but we’ve got to go.   I wish we could stay and protect you, but…”  Millie shook her head at my offer.  “I’ll be fine.  He wouldn’t hurt an old lady like me,” she replied.  “Now go!” she added with urgency.  I grabbed Sam’s hand and dragged him to the truck.  He was still stiff as a board.  I could feel the anger inside of him.  We got inside his Mustang as Sam tried to start up the car; it didn’t work.  My eyes widened in fear as Sam got out to see what was wrong.

“The bastard took out the engine!” Sam yelled as he returned to the car.  I looked up at him with fear in my eyes.  But I was supposed to be strong; I wasn’t the one in danger here…  It was Sam who was in danger.  But now something inside of Sam had awakened, and he had that hard look on his face like he was ready to fight to the death—he might have to…  “What do we do?” I asked in desperation.  Sam looked back at the door.  He was searching for Gabe to awaken, and we knew we didn’t have much time.  “We run,” Sam finally answered as he closed the door to his Mustang.  I got out of the car.  “But you can’t just leave your car behind,” I protested.  Sam shook his head as he came to me and grabbed my hand.  “I don’t care about the damn car, Kat.  We have got to run,” he exclaimed as he pulled me.

I slung the duffel bag around me and started running.  I didn’t know how far we would get, but we had to try something.  We ran for what seemed like ages; suddenly my lungs just couldn’t take it anymore.  I stopped and began to breathe heavily.  Sam stopped a few feet ahead of me, realizing that I was no longer with him.  We had no idea where we were, and I was growing more paranoid by the minute.  If Gabe was anything like Levi, he would find us in no time.  “Kat, we’ve got to keep going,” Sam urged.  I shook my head.  I felt terrible that I couldn’t keep up.  Curse my thunder thighs of pudding!  I felt the lump in my throat returning as I began to give up.  Sam came over to me and grabbed me by the shoulders.  “Kat, you have got to keep going! Don’t give up now!  We’re so close!”

I shook my head as the tears began to fall.  “This is no use, Sam!  We can’t do this!  I’ve tried this all before, and look where it got me.  I’ll be alive, but you won’t!” I cried out, feeling the weight of the world fall on my shoulders.  Sam had a look of compassion in his eyes as he pulled me into his arms and placed my head on his chest.  “Don’t cry, Kitty-Kat…  We will find a way; from what you’ve told me about my future self, I would do anything for you.  I am not going to leave you; ever,” he promised as he kissed the top of my head softly.  I breathed in deeply into his chest and felt his aura just overtake me.  He slowly pulled my head away from his and gazed deeply into my eyes.  “Let’s go,” he urged.  I slowly nodded my head as he took the duffel bag from me to give me less weight to carry.

He grabbed my hand and we began to run again.  I thought we were going in circles, but we ended up on that same fateful highway I had been on once before.  I found the spot where Levi had pushed me out of the car and forced me into the woods.  It sent a shiver down my spine to think about it.  That kiss was a kiss of death to me; it raped my mind then and there, and I felt sick to my stomach.  Sam headed onto the shoulder of the road and put out his thumb.  “We’re going to hitchhike?” I asked with surprise.  Sam looked at me like I wasn’t thinking.  “What else are we going to do?  The next town is 10 miles away,” he replied as cars whizzed past us.  I didn’t think anyone was going to stop. The sun was all ready setting and the rain had subsided, but there were puddles that threatened to drench us as cars went by.

Suddenly a little 1967 Volkswagen pulled up to the shoulder and stopped.  I nearly had a heart attack.  It was the exact same car that Sam had been driving in the future.  A little woman got out with a look of shock on her face.  “What are you two doing on the side of the road?” she asked.  As I got a better look at her, I realized that it was Sonya.  “Sonya!” I yelled as I struggled to think of an explanation.  “Hi, Kat, Sam…  Why are you guys hitchhiking?” she inquired as she looked us over.  “Our car broke down,” Sam replied quietly.  Sonya nodded her head.  “I see…  You guys never made it to the reception,” she stated as she leaned against the hood of the car.  I shrugged my shoulders.  “We had an emergency…” I muttered as I looked around to see if Gabe was nearby.  I began to feel antsy.  Was she going to give us a ride, or was she going to carry on a conversation while we wait for the impending doom?

“What manners I have…  I can give you guys a ride if you want,” Sonya finally offered.  I felt a little more at ease as I let out a sigh.  “That would be great, Sonya,” I replied.  She smiled at me as she returned to the car.  “Come on; where exactly are you guys headed?” she asked as she opened her door and got inside.  I got into the passenger side as Sam climbed into the back seat with our duffel bag.  What was I supposed to tell her?  “Sonya, you need to know something,” I began as she headed back onto the road.  “What is it?” she asked.  She could sense the urgency in my voice.  I don’t know why, but I had to tell her everything.  At least, I had to tell her about Gabe trying to kill Sam.  She was the only friend I had, and for some reason, I felt like I could tell her.

“Someone is trying to kill Sam,” I muttered quietly, waiting for her reaction.  Sonya glanced at me in shock.  “What are you talking about?” she questioned.  I sighed as I turned to the back seat and glanced at Sam.  “There’s this guy named Gabe who is sort of like a… hit man, if you will, and his job is to kill Sam.  We were trying to run away,” I explained, feeling like the words that just came out of my mouth were from some stupid movie.  Sonya was quiet for a minute.  I waited for her to pull over and kick us out of the car for being insane.  But instead, Sonya grabbed my hand.  “That is just terrible, Kat.  What is wrong with this guy Gabe?  Why would he want to kill Sam?” she questioned, occasionally glancing at him through her rearview mirror.  I shrugged my shoulders.  “It’s his job.  We tried to beg him not to, but he’s not a man you can reason with.  So, we’re trying to get as far away from him as possible; but we don’t know how to get there,” I exclaimed, feeling the weight on me get heavier and heavier.  Sonya let go of my hand and pulled out her cell phone.

She searched through her contacts and I could tell she had an idea.  “Would money help?” she asked.  I looked at her skeptically.  “I mean, I can give you money and put it on a debit card, and take you to the airport so you can get plane tickets to wherever you want to go; you could go to Timbuktu for all you care,” she explained.  I turned to Sam to see what he thought.  “You would do that for us?” he asked, astonished by her generosity.  I barely knew her, but she was willing to give her own money so that Sam and I could get away.  I was speechless.  “I’ve got this friend at the bank who can set it all up in a matter of minutes,” Sonya exclaimed as she got off on an exit.  “We can do it right now,” she added.  I didn’t know what to say.  Sonya was wonderful.  When we got out of the car, I hugged her tightly.  “Why are you doing all of this for me?” I asked as we entered the bank.

She shrugged her shoulders.  “I told you; I don’t have very many friends in Ruckshire…  And of all the people I’ve ever met, you have treated me the nicest.  Even my other friends from home… they couldn’t make it to my wedding; but you did.  I want to do this for you; one day you can repay me,” she exclaimed with a smile.  I nodded.  “I will; I will,” I assured her as she spoke to the teller.  Sam put his arm around me as we waited for Sonya.  “She’s amazing,” he stated.  I nodded, still in shock that Sonya was doing this for us.  “I wish we weren’t running away,” I muttered as I leaned my head against Sam’s shoulder.  Sam gave my arm a little squeeze.  “That bastard isn’t going to win, Kat,” he assured me.  “How do you know?” I asked.  He answered with such conviction, it was like he all ready knew the outcome.

“I’m psychic,” he teased.  I smacked his arm.  “Not funny,” I muttered as Sonya returned to us with a large envelope.  “I can’t believe you actually did it,” I stated, staring down at the envelope.  Sonya put her finger to her lips and ushered us outside back to her car.  When we got inside, she handed us the envelope.  “I don’t want the bank to think something suspicious is going on.  I took out two-thousand dollars for you guys,” she exclaimed.  My eyes widened.  “Two-thousand dollars?” Sam replied.  Sonya nodded.  “And if you need any more, I can wire some to you,” she stated.  I couldn’t believe it; Sonya was a saint.  How was I so lucky to find such people in my lives?  Millie had done more than she was asked of, and now Sonya was going above and beyond as well.  It made me feel about two inches small.  I had done nothing but ask and take; here I was doing it all over again.  “Don’t think this is pity money,” Sonya explained, reading my facial expression.

I smiled up at her thankfully.  “I want to do this for you,” she added, assuring me that it was okay to take the money.  “Thank you, Sonya; thank you,” I replied, almost too chocked up to get the words out.  She nodded as she turned the car back on and headed onto the highway.  “So I guess I’m taking you two to the airport then,” she stated.
