CHAPTER 5

I dropped the two-by-four as it made a loud thud onto the ground in front of me.  I could feel myself shaking as I struggled to grasp the words Gabe had just told me.  No… It couldn’t be…  “You’re, you’re what?” I managed to stutter.  Gabe shook his head.  “Kat, you can’t fight this.  Sam altered the future to save you.  Someone has to pay for that; we can’t just let the future continue without making up for what was lost…  Sam has to pay that price,” he explained.  I shook my head.  This wasn’t happening… not again…  “You can’t take him from me,” I replied, feeling the anger and terror rise inside of me.  “You really have no choice, sweetie.  I have to do my job; and unlike Levi, I don’t get distracted and go along my own vendettas,” Gabe replied, moving forward again.  I felt myself flinch as I moved backwards.

“You can’t kill him!  He’s all I have!  Please; just leave us alone!” I begged as Gabe continued moving forward.  “Nothing you say will change my mind.  This is inevitable, Kat.  It’s set in stone.  Sam is going to die,” he replied.  I felt my heart beat faster and faster as I stood there for a moment.  I thought about the last time this happened.  How were we supposed to avoid this?  How were we supposed to overcome this if someone has to die anyways?  “Sam is not going to die; I won’t let you take him!” I yelled as I darted down the rest of the alley back onto the street.  I knew exactly what I had to do; I just didn’t know if I was insane or not…  I didn’t stop running when I got onto the street; I continued running to Sam’s house.  I ran until my legs felt like they had come off of my body, but I still kept running.

As I reached the door to his apartment, I stopped as I breathed heavily, struggling to catch my breath.  I began pounding on the door as hard as I could.  “Open the door, Sam,” I urged as I continued pounding.  Suddenly I heard locks being opened and Sam stood in front of me.  He was only wearing his boxers and a wife beater shirt, and his eyes seemed drowsy.  He was squinting at me in confusion as he shivered from the cold seeping through the door.  “Kitty-Kat, what’s going on?” he asked as I realized he was sleeping.  I looked down at my watch quickly to realize it was only 9:30 on a Sunday.  I glanced around me and felt my heart pounding as the information I had just acquired was about ready to explode.  Sam looked me over and struggled to read me.

“What is wrong, Kat?” he asked again, feeling the urgency.  I couldn’t speak at the moment as I felt a lump in my throat and tears threatening to expose themselves.  Sam grabbed my arm and looked down into my eyes.  I looked up at his golden hue and just melted.  I couldn’t lose him!  The tears began to flow as I jumped into his arms and began to sob.  Sam pulled us inside and closed the door behind me.  “Kat, for goodness sake, will you tell me what the hell is going on?  Why are you crying?” he begged, searching my face for answers.  I just continued to sob onto his shirt as he brought me to the couch in his living room.  He sat me down and pushed me from his chest.  He put his hands on either side of my face and gave me a look that said, “Tell me right now.”  I sighed as I struggled to stop crying and wiped at my tears.  Sam quickly grabbed a tissue box and handed me some tissues as he began to rub my back.

“Sam…  You can’t die,” I muttered as I felt the lump still lodged in my throat.  Sam looked at me with a puzzled expression on his face.  “What are you talking about?” he asked, wondering if I had gone insane.  I shook my head.  “You…  Oh, you wouldn’t understand…” I muttered as I looked out the window at the light seeping through the blinds.  Sam grabbed my face and forced me to look at him.  “Try me,” he replied as he grabbed a tissue and wiped a tear I had missed.  Let’s see… how do you explain to your fiancé that in the future, he came back to save you from dying the day before your wedding and he succeeded, but because he changed the future, your present boyfriend had to suffer the consequences…  “Sam…  Well, you know how I know so much about the future?” I began, trying to find some sort of starting point.  Sam nodded slowly.  “You see, I knew all of those things because… well, I’ve all ready met you before… You came from the future to save me.  I died in a hit and run accident the day before our wedding in the future, so your future self had to come back to the present to save me… Ugh, this isn’t making any sense,” I replied, standing up and beginning to pace the floor.

Sam searched my face.  “No, it really isn’t,” he replied as he watched me pace back and forth.  I turned back towards him.  “Well, you saved me, and that altered the future…  And now, you have to pay the price for that altered future,” I explained.  Sam stood up, coming towards me.  “You mean to tell me that you believe I came from the future, like with a time machine, and I saved you, went back to the future, and now I’m supposed to ‘reap the consequences’?” he asked, struggling to understand me.  I shrugged my shoulders.  “It’s true, Sam…  This guy, Levi, tried to kill me so you couldn’t change the future, but we killed him…  That sealed my future…  But now there’s this other guy, the guy from Zelda’s, and his name is Gabe… He’s supposed to kill you,” I explained, feeling like my explanations were futile.

Sam grabbed my arm and stopped me from pacing.  He looked into my eyes and gave me a look that said, “You have got to be kidding me.”  I shook my head in frustration.  “You don’t believe me…  How could you not believe me?  I’m your damn fiancé and you think I’m going crazy!” I yelled in anger.  Sam tried to calm me down.  “No… I don’t think you’re crazy, Kat…  I just don’t see how this all comes together…” he struggled to explain.  I ripped my arm from his hands and headed towards the door.  “Why do you think I knew the exact date of our wedding?  How could I possibly have known that?” I spat as I turned to him one last time as my hand rested on the door handle.  Sam let out a sigh as he shrugged his shoulders. He had no answer.  I let go of the door handle and walked back towards him.  “Sam, please, just believe me.  I believed you with even less information to start with,” I replied, pleading with my eyes.

“I don’t want you to die,” I muttered as the tears began to flow again.  Sam grabbed me and pulled me close to his chest.  “I’m not going to die; I promise you that,” he soothed as he rubbed my back.  I held onto him tightly and smelled that intoxicating scent.  It was electrifying.  I just wanted us to live in our own bubble, away from the world…  But I knew that if we stayed here, Gabe would find us, and Sam would be dead.  I pulled my head away from Sam’s chest and looked up into his eyes.  “Sam, let’s run away,” I suggested quietly.  Sam smiled with his eyes as he stroked my hair.  “So you do want to elope?” he questioned jokingly.  I let out a sigh of frustration.  “Yes, Sam…  I want to elope,” I finally replied.  If this was the only way I could save Sam, then so be it.  Sarah would understand…  We could flee to some island in a remote location and never come back…  I wouldn’t mind.  Sam let out a laugh as he wiped a tear from my eye with his thumb.  “You’re serious?” he questioned, searching my face.  I nodded.   “Yes, Sam… let’s go right now,” I suggested.

Suddenly my phone began to vibrate.  I ignored the vibrations on my pants as I struggled to get an answer from Sam.  Sam looked down at my pants and then turned his gaze back at me.  “You do know your pants are vibrating,” he replied as he moved one of his hands to my front pocket and felt my phone.  I nodded.  “Well?  Aren’t you going to answer it?” he asked as he pulled it out of my pocket.  I grabbed the phone from him to see a number I didn’t recognize.  Was it going to be one of THOSE days?  I reluctantly answered the phone as Sam continued holding my waist.  “Hello?”   “Hey, Katarina?  This is Sonya,” I heard a voice reply.

“Oh… hi.”

“How are you?”

“To tell you the truth… I could be better…”

“I’m sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you were still coming to my wedding tomorrow.  I would love to see you there…”

“Oh; right… your wedding…  I don’t know… something important has come up.”

“Aw, please, Kat… You’re one of the only people I know in this stupid town, and I want you to meet my future husband, Ryan.  And I wanted to meet your fiancé too…”

“I… I guess we could come…”

“Oh, thank you so much, Kat!  I am so glad to hear you say that!  Just come to the church tomorrow at 2pm…  Call me if you need directions.”

I sighed as Sonya hung up.  Sam searched my face.  “A wedding?” he asked.  I nodded.  “You remember that girl Sonya?  Well she invited us to her wedding, and it’s tomorrow,” I replied as I shoved my phone back into my pocket.  Sam smiled.  “I want to go,” he stated happily.  I nodded.  “Somehow I knew you would say that,” I replied.  I still felt this weight on my shoulders.  I couldn’t shake that terror from the pit of my stomach.  Gabe was going to try and kill Sam sometime soon…  I didn’t want to let him do that.  Sam grabbed my chin and forced me to look at him.  “Everything will be okay, Kat…  I promise…  And I never make a promise I can’t keep.  Now stop moping around and smile,” he demanded.  I sighed as I put a smile on my face.  Sam laughed at my attempt.  “You really were always a bad liar,” he replied as he inched his face closer to mine and kissed me gently on the lips.

I still always got butterflies whenever he kissed me.  Whenever he looked at me with that burning desire, I would always blush and feel that desire within the pit of my stomach ready to explode.  Sam smiled as he pulled his lips slowly away from mine.  “I love you,” he whispered as he placed his forehead against mine and looked down into my eyes.  I looked up at him and wrapped my arms around his neck.  “I love you too,” I whispered back.
