Drop-Dead Gorgeous CH 20
|
I gazed down at the odd device that was supposedly to bring Sam back to June 2008. Even with all the weird things that had happened to me since I met Sam, I still wasn’t sure that one little cell phone would convert into a time machine. Sam looked up at me, smiling. “I can’t wait to get married,” he said. I smiled back at him, grabbing his hand. “Me too,” I replied. Sam let out a deep sigh and looked around one last time. I could feel the tears welling up as I knew the time had come to say goodbye to the love of my life. Sam turned back to me and saw the tears in my eyes. He shook his head and pulled me close. “You’re being ridiculous, Kat. I’m not dead…” he stated. I nodded. Suddenly Jack’s face ran through my mind. “But Jack is…” I replied quietly. Sam put his chin on the top of my head. “Yeah; he is… But he died saving you, and I won’t ever forget that,” he whispered.
I looked up at him, just wanting to kiss his lips, kiss his face… kiss him all over. I yearned to have him, but I knew I would have to wait… “I love you, Mr. Gorgeous,” I whispered. Sam laughed into my ear as he turned his face towards mine. He lightly pressed his lips against mine and kissed me goodbye. It was the worst feeling to know that he was leaving me behind… but I was going to wait to see him again one day. And it was going to be wonderful. I was going to be working in Zelda’s, just like the first time, singing to that Michael Bublé song, and he would walk in, intrigued by my stupidity. I would glance over at him and blush, offering him a slice of Zelda’s famous pizza—that is, if I didn’t jump him first… As Sam pulled his lips away from mine, I knew it was time. “Please love me when I see you again,” I pleaded with worry. Sam laughed at my request. “I have no doubt that it will be love at first sight,” he reassured. I looked down as he flipped open the cell phone. “How does it work exactly?” I asked with curiosity. Sam pointed to the key pad. “You just type in the date; so I’ll type in 06/03/2008,” he explained. It all actually seemed so simple; the test was to see if it worked.
Sam looked at me longingly one last time. “I’ll see you in the future,” he said, squeezing my hand, then letting it go. He moved back and typed, 06,03,2008. I braced myself as I waited for him to return to where he truly belonged. He looked up at me and smiled that sexy smile I had come to love so much. If anyone would have told me that the man, who spilled coffee on me on my first day of work, giving me that detesting look, was the love of my life, I would have told them they were crazy. But here I was, saying goodbye to Mr. Gorgeous. “I won’t forget,” I whispered as he put his finger on the “send” button. He winked at me and said, “Neither will I.” At that, he pressed send… All of a sudden, this big ball of light that resembled a portal opened up right next to him. I watched in shock as he began to step through. He took one last look at me, and walked into the portal. It closed up, and he was gone. It was as if he had just vanished, along with the wind… I ran to the spot where he had last stood, hoping that his scent still lingered there.
As I stood there, I heard someone call out to me. “Katarina? Where the hell have you been? I should fire you…” Zelda joked. I turned around and looked at her with a smile. “You couldn’t fire me; you like me too much,” I countered. I began to walk over to her as Sarah emerged from the diner. She had a worried look on her face. “Is it over?” she asked. I came and put my hand on her shoulder. “It’s over,” I whispered. Zelda smiled. “Let’s all go inside and have a slice of pie,” she offered. Sarah put her arm around me as we began to walk inside. I turned back to the spot where Sam had disappeared and smiled. “Goodbye, Mr. Gorgeous,” I whispered.
It was a dreary day as Jack’s funeral commenced. I sat next to Millie, who was holding a fist full of tissues in her hand. The rain was pouring down as I held the umbrella for myself, and for Millie. It was a sad day for me; just days after saying goodbye to Sam, I was officially saying goodbye to Jack. Tears streamed down my face as Millie wept on my shoulder. The preacher spoke for a few moments; I didn’t really know what he said. Then he asked if anyone would like to share a testimony. I was quick to stand up. I left the umbrella with Millie and walked out into the rain. “Humphrey Jack Warren was a wonderful man. He joined the army when he was 20, and he was a brave soldier. He met my brother in combat, and as my brother died on the battle field, Jack stayed with him until his last breath. When I officially met him, I thought he was just some guy; but he ended up doing things for me that no other human being would. He saved my life countless times, and he became like another brother to me. I will never forget what he has done for me, and I will owe him for the rest of my life…” I began to cry as I walked back to my seat.
After the funeral, Millie and I sat in the same spot as people came by, giving their condolences. I squeezed Millie’s hand. “Thank you for coming,” Millie said quietly. I nodded. “Of course I came; he was my brother,” I whispered. Millie looked up at me and smiled weakly. “I guess I better go home…” She stood to her feet and I handed her the umbrella. “Millie?” I called after her. She turned back to me. “Yes?” she asked. I stood up and walked over to her. “I would really like some tea and cookies tomorrow…” I replied. She smiled at me and nodded. “I’ll be waiting,” she said softly. I watched her go to her car and get inside. I stood at Jack’s grave for a moment, but I knew that I had to go to work… I had all ready missed over a month; that was inexcusable. I sighed as I gently place a red rose on Jack’s grave.
I made my way quietly down the road towards the little diner on the corner of the street. I hadn’t changed out of my wet clothes just yet because I didn’t have the time; I was going to change when I got to the diner. Thankfully the rain had subsided and the sun actually protruded through the clouds, making the day seem far more pleasant than it actually felt. It was a chilly day near the middle of October, so I grabbed a hot cup of coffee to keep me warm. I walked down the sidewalk in my patent leather heels… “I should have worn some flats… My feet are killing me,” I said to myself as I walked down the sidewalk, looking down periodically so I wouldn’t fall through any little cracks and break my neck. It would be terrible to die before I even met… him. I sighed as I thought about Sam. It had been an unbearable four days since Sam disappeared into the future. I was so jealous of him; he could go back and be with me that very day… I had to wait. I continued to walk down the sidewalk, cup of coffee in one hand, a bag with my work uniform in the other. I continued to look down at the sidewalk as I neared Zelda’s. As I walked mindlessly toward my destination, I collided into someone and all of my coffee spilled onto my all ready wet clothes.
I stood there in shock as memories of my first encounter with someone else ran through my mind. “Oh, I am so sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going…” I heard the voice say as I tried to recover. Wait… That voice… It sounds like… I looked up to see the face that I hoped belong to the voice. The voice was that same sexy, husky voice I had come to know and love. When my eyes caught his beautiful brownish-golden eyes, I nearly melted. It was him!!! It was MY Sam!! I wanted to grab him and kiss him until I ran out of air, but I composed myself and tried to think of the scalding hot coffee that was burning my arms and my clothes… “It’s okay,” I managed to spit out. Sam looked so about spilling the coffee all over me. “I feel terrible about this; you’re covered in hot coffee…” he replied. I smiled at him as I patted at my clothes. Sam leafed through his pockets and pulled out a handkerchief.
“Guys still have handkerchiefs?” I inquired as he handed it to me. He smiled as I gladly accepted his gift, my eyes lingering on his face for a fraction of a second longer than I wanted to. “Gentlemen always carry handkerchiefs,” he said with that sexy smile of his. Oh, Mr. Gorgeous… I can’t believe it’s actually you. Granted, Sam looked a little younger than before, and his hair was in a slightly different style, but he was still that sexy man I had fallen in love with, with one difference. As I gazed into his eyes, there was a light in them; there was no dullness to be found. They were just beautiful eyes… “So you suppose you’re a gentleman then?” I countered with some witty banter. Sam shrugged his shoulders. “At least I didn’t just walk by without a word…” he stated simply.
If only you knew what you did the first time… I tried to stifle a laugh as I handed Sam back his handkerchief. Sam just stared at me; it was the best feeling. “What?” I asked, pretending to wonder why he was staring. Sam shrugged his shoulders. “I’m Sam,” he introduced himself. I laughed. It was funny to think how open THIS Sam was compared to the one I all ready knew. Sam gave me a quizzical look. “Is something funny?” he asked. I shook my head. “I just had a feeling your name was Sam… Sometimes I’m psychic,” I whispered. I wanted to have a little fun with him. Sam nodded as he inched closer. “I see… Then what am I thinking right now?” he challenged. Let’s see… Did I really want to play that game? …YES. “Okay, but you asked for it. You’re thinking, this girl is beautiful; I want to know her name, and I want to get to know her better. She is just so amazing; I think I’ll ask her to the diner down the street,” I replied. Sam laughed as I shifted my feet in pain. Those shoes were killing me! “You’re good,” Sam replied. I nodded. “I know; I’m Katarina, by the way. But you can call me Kat,” I stated. Sam watched as I struggled in my high heel shoes. “I have a thought; I feel really bad about your clothes and the coffee, so why don’t I take you to lunch as an apology? It will also give your feet some much needed rest…” he asked.
I thought for a moment; well, I wasn’t really thinking. Of course I was going to say yes! I just wanted him to squirm a little. After a few minutes, I finally looked up into his gorgeous eyes. “I think that’s a great idea.” Sam was pleased. “You know, I knew you were going to say that; sometimes I’m psychic too,” he whispered. I rolled my eyes. That was definitely my Sam… I grabbed a hold of his arm, taking off my shoes, and replied, “Let’s go, Mr. Gorgeous.” Kat 2, Mr. Gorgeous, infinity.
